2017 Grandstand Line-up & Entertainment Tuesday, August 8 7:00 pm ~ Motokazie Supercross Wednesday, August 9 7:00 pm ~ Go Kart Racing Thursday, August 10 7:00 pm ~ NTPA Tractor Pull Friday, August 11 7:30 pm ~ Chase & Ovation “A Salute to Prince” Saturday, August 12 7:00 pm ~ Great Frontier Bull Riding Sunday, August 13 2:00 pm ~ Demolition Derby

Chase & Ovation “In the decade before his passing, Prince allowed me to travel the world and perform in Tribute and in Reverence to his music. In particular, over the past six years, Chase & Ovation has been allowed and extremely blessed to perform a monthly concert at Prince’s favorite hometown/local live music venue (‘Bunkers Music Bar’) located in our hometown and in the heart of the North Loop of Minneapolis. I have always done this with Prince’s knowledge under the name ‘Chase & Ovation,’ and am frequently joined on stage with many of Prince’s former band mates. I wake up filled with gratitude every day and give thanks in prayer for the gift of music that Prince has given to me, but MORE importantly the gift that he has given to the world!”

A Salute to Prince

“From being babysat by Prince’s mother, Mattie, after my adoption into the Chase family, to my work with Prince on the set of his film ‘Graffiti Bridge,’ to performing for a year with Brown Mark (Bassist for Prince and the Revolution) in the band Cryptic… like SO many of us around the world, the music of Prince and the Minneapolis sound has been the soundtrack to my life.” “After a week of heartache in his absence and while considering retirement from the Chase & Ovation Prince Tribute, it has become abundantly clear through the outpouring of unconditional love that we’ve received from Prince fans all around the world, that discontinuing our performances of his music would be a tremendous disservice to the very one who allowed me to do it in the first place: PRINCE himself! As difficult as the upcoming shows will be to perform, Chase & Ovation will indeed honor all dates and has begun accepting opportunities to showcase his music around the world. “On a personal note… Why did Prince allow me to perform his music while the world knew how closely he protected his art? It is only now that I understand how happy he was that I never tried to impersonate him by wearing a purple jacket and the like, but instead that I/we have only ever focused on paying tremendous reverence to his musical genius rather than his wardrobe.” Thank you dear brother, Prince! The band and I will do all we can to honor all you left us here with! Let us always remember to Celebrate Love… Life… And the Music of PRINCE! ~Tommy Chase~

2017 Entertainment Spotlight Meet Terry Schmidt - The Piano Man When did you begin playing the piano? I was around 10 or 11 years old. I was taking piano lessons from a Mrs. Mathison for 5 years, near Brownsdale. I then switched to lessons from Mrs. Jan Muzik for 2 years in Austin. Our mother and my older brother Ron played piano which really inspired me to enjoy it and learn it too. In my 20’s while living in Burnsville I studied Music Theory and Jazz Alto Saxophone at The MacPhail Center for the Arts in Mpls. How long have you been in front of an audience? For 35 years. I started a band called Cresent in Bloomington back in 1982, and have played with different groups ever since. I started my solo Piano/Vocals show around 2008. What satisfaction/rewards do you receive from playing in front of people who enjoy what you do?

It’s always satisfying to play a wide variety of songs that appeal to fans of all ages. You can get folks ranging from 25 to 75 years old sitting in the same crowd singing along with a John Lennon song, followed by a Roger Miller or Hank Williams Sr. song. I often perform at local private parties where I set up a 2nd or even 3rd microphone and encourage people to get up on stage and sing with me for added fun! I can be reached at 612-810-7157 for event & party hiring. Residents of the Cedars of Austin will display their talents at the Mower County Free Fair Please plan to visit the Creative Arts Building during the Fair to see the wide range of artwork submitted by the residents of The Cedars of Austin. This is their second year of competition at the Fair and they are excited to see how many ribbons they will earn this year. Seniors Day at the Fair is Thursday, August 10th, and many of The Cedars residents will be at the entrance of the Creative Arts Building to greet you and direct you to their wonderful display area. It is located under the “Cedars” section inside. Several of their art pieces entered in the 2016 Mower County Fair are shown here. History of Fairs

SOURCE: The International Association of Fairs and Expositions www.fairsandexpos.com The history of fairs is clouded and the record is less than complete. Nonetheless, the story of mankind is replete with references to fairs, not in an institutional context, but as a part of everyday social intercourse. A casual observer might conclude that American fairs and exhibitions came fresh out of eighteenth century western Europe, delivered to the colonial docks of Boston and Halifax with a predisposed mission to serve agriculture and animal husbandry. This observation fits with our collective sense of tradition, but fails to recognize centuries of historical linkage to the eastern Mediterranean before the birth of Christ. Old and New Testament references to fairs are mixed with allusions to commerce, trade, the marketplace, festivals, religious feasts and holy days. Where and when the first fair was held is not known, however, evidence points to the existence of fairs as early as 500 BC Scripture records in the book of Ezekiel: “Tarshish was thy merchant by reason of the multitude of the kinds of riches with silver, iron, tin and lead, they traded in thy fairs.” Ezekiel’s account of the destruction of Tyre, supposedly written about 588 BC, describes Tyre as an important market and fair center. Fairs were commercial in character from the beginning. Merchants from distant countries would come together, bringing native wares to trade with one another, and even though it is not clearly explained in Ezekiel or in other biblical references, it is reasonable to assume that “fair” was the name given to the place at which early trading between foreign merchants was conducted. It is equally clear that religious activity was companion to the commerce. The Latin world “feria” meaning holy day, would appear the logical root of the word “fair.” Each feria was a day when large numbers of people would assemble for worship. Worship in those early days was centered around temples in great cities, including Ninevah, Athens, Rome and Mecca. These cities were also respected as the great commercial centers of the world. Fields adjacent to these temples were staked out for traders. Religious figures were placed about the fields in order to protect the traders and merchants. During the early Christian era, the church took an active part in sponsoring fairs on feast days, and as a result, fairs came to be a source of revenue for the church. Possibly, our modern church bazaars possess some rudiments of these religious fairs.

Fun at the Fair 2017

This evolution which blended religion and commerce continued over time and moved into western Europe. Periodic gatherings brought together the producers of all types of commodities for the purpose of barter, exchange and, finally, outright sale. To this marketplace were added entertainment and other forms of activity thus, these primitive market took on the aspect of fairs as we know them today. In 1765, less than 300 years after Columbus finished his work in the New World, the first American fair was presented in Windsor, Nova Scotia. The same fair continues to operate today. In upper Canada, as Ontario was known in early Confederation, a fair was held in 1792, sponsored by the Niagara Agricultural Society. As with Windsor, the Niagara Fair remains in operation today. In addition, many small fairs were held during the early 1700’s in French Canada while under French rule. Meanwhile, Elkanah Watson, a New England patriot and farmer, earned the title, “Father of US agricultural fairs” by organizing the Berkshire Agricultural Society and creating an event (known then as a Cattle Show) in Pittsfield, Massachusetts in September 1811. It was more than just an exhibit of animals – it was a competition, with prize money ($70) paid for the best exhibits of oxen, cattle, swine and sheep. Watson worked diligently for many years helping communities organize their own agricultural societies and their respective shows (fairs). By 1819 most counties in New England had organized their own agricultural societies and the movement was spreading into the other states. The nineteenth century closed with almost every state and province having one or more agricultural fair or exhibition. The core elements of those agricultural society events of the early 1800s - those early fairs – are at the heart of the agricultural fair in North America today. Competition for the best agricultural and domestic products of the county and/or community (or region or state), an annual celebrate for the community to come together, to share, to learn. Today, over 3,200 fairs are held in North America each year. They provide industrial exhibits, demonstrations and competition aimed at the advancement of livestock, horticulture and agriculture with special emphasis placed on educational activities such as 4-H, FFA and similar youth development programs. While enjoying these high-minded pursuits, fair visitors are also able to see, hear, touch, smell and taste the richness and variety of what the world has to offer.

Plan Your Summer Festival And Fair Schedule Festival and fair season heats up when the temperatures rise. Come summertime, communities across the country play host to cultural, film, music, craft, hobby, or food festivals. With so many entertaining options on the horizon, families and individuals with hectic schedules need to start scoping out their summer festival options early. Here’s how to navigate the bevy of offerings and get ready for several months of fun. · Explore your options. Consult local news sources for upcoming weekend activities. Fairs and festivals are often advertised in neighborhoods on signs and billboards, but they also may be mentioned in calendar-ofevents pages in local newspapers. Visit the website of your local chamber of commerce or tourism board to see if they have listings of upcoming local events. · Choose your preferences. Make fair and festival planning a family affair. Look for events that appeal to all members of the household, or allow each member of the

family a weekend afternoon to find events that cater to their interests. Take out the calendar and mark must-see festivals out as early as possible. · Sign up for updates. Many fairs and festivals are annual events. Visit their websites and sign up for an email mailing list so you can receive updates on events. Joining mailing lists may even make you eligible for coupons or entrance fee discounts on certain days. · Secure accommodations. Increase the enjoyment factor of the fair or festival by not being pressed for time. Book a room in a nearby hotel or motel and turn a weekend festival excursion into a mini-vacation. · Dress the part. Festivals and fairs typically take place outdoors. Dress according to the morning forecast. Layer clothing so that everyone can take off or add items to feel comfortable. Wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses may provide relief from overhead sun. Plus, don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes, as festivalgoers tend

to walk a lot. Apply and reapply sunblock throughout the day as necessary. · Plan your transportation. Typically fairs and festivals can get crowded quickly, with ingress and egress roads being blocked by traffic. Also, parking lots may fill up fast. Plan to leave early for the fair, and consider public transportation, shuttle buses or a rideshare service to make the day more carefree. · Identify a meeting spot. In the event that a child or adult separates from the group, find a meeting spot where the family can gather. Children can also carry a note listing an adult’s mobile phone number for emergencies. Fairs and festivals are an annual ritual for many people. Now is the time to plan for these fun-filled excursions.

Youth Showcase a Year of 4-H Learning at Mower County Fair

AUSTIN – August 8-13, more than 350 youth from Mower County will showcase the learning and achievements they have accomplished in 4-H over the past year at the Mower County Fair. Minnesota county fairs are not just fun annual events for 4-H members. Every summer, tens of thousands of 4-H youth participate in county fairs to showcase the knowledge and skills they’ve gained throughout the year, and to continue their learning experiences. 4-H youth spend months working on projects designed to equip them with essential life skills such as problem solving, decision making, project management, communications and public speaking. 4-H’ers then share their accomplishments and educate the public about their subject at their local county fair. They also lead visitors on tours of the 4-H buildings and barns, and conduct workshops and hands-on demonstrations for the public. 4-H’ers who demonstrate the highest achievements are then selected to participate in 4-H competitions at the Minnesota State Fair! County fairs not only make great memories, they help 4-H youth grow into successful adults. “One of 4-H’s priorities is to provide learning and leadership experiences that guide youth in building relationships, developing communication techniques, and strengthening organizational skills,” said Dorothy M. Freeman, Extension Center for Youth Development Associate Dean and State 4-H Director. “Through these experiences, youth find the leaders within themselves and are able to make a positive impact in their club, home, school or community.” Which 4-H Events will be happening each day of the fair? Pre-Fair Activities: Saturday, July 29: Food Review Judging, Clothing & Fashion Review Judging, begins at 10 am, 4-H Building Saturday, August 5: Horse Show, begins at 9 am, Fairgrounds

What do the 4-H Ribbon Colors mean? When walking around the fair, after judging you will see a colored ribbon on each of the projects. The Minnesota 4-H program awards ribbons based on the Danish System. This means that in each 4-H competition, 4-H members are graded based on set standards. All exhibits, presentations, etc. receive a ribbon based on where they fall on the standard scale. More than one color of a ribbon may be awarded in a category or area. In other words, several 4-H members may receive blue ribbons within the same category. The ribbon colors awarded are purple, blue, red and white. The blue, red and white ribbons do not designate first, second and third. They represent the level of achievement. Blue ribbons are awarded to 4-H’ers who exhibit outstanding work in the area or presentation by mastering a skill, increasing their knowledge and/or showing pride in workmanship and quality based on their age level. Red ribbons are awarded to 4-H’ers whose project or exhibition is not as polished as those of the blue level. The 4-H’er may have learned a skill but not yet mastered it completely. Information may not be complete or accurate. White ribbons are awarded to 4-H’ers whose project(s)

Fun at the Fair 2017

may be incomplete or lacking in mastery of the skill. Purple ribbons are awarded to denote the champion in a presentation or exhibit. The purple or champion ribbon is awarded to the one 4-H’er whose skills, knowledge or mastery has surpassed all others in the category/ division. Some events award green or participation ribbons to all participants. This is usually done for Cloverbuds (youth in grades K-2nd) level where competition is not developmentally appropriate and is highly discouraged. To learn more about 4-H in Mower County, contact 4-H Program Coordinator April Johnson, at 507-437-9552 and visit the website, www.4-H.umn.edu. About Extension 4-H: 4-H is a youth development program of the University of Minnesota Extension. Available for youth grades k-1 year after high school, 4-H’ers participate in hands-on learning experiences in STEM, citizenship & leadership, animal science, creative arts and much more. Through this learn-by-doing process, youth obtain essential life skills such as problem solving, decision making, coping and communicating that help them succeed in their school, college, community and career. Research shows that youth who participate in 4-H have better grades and are more emotionally engaged with school, are more than twice as likely to be civically active and contribute to their communities, and are 47% less likely to have risky or problem behaviors.

The National FFA Organization is an integral part of agricultural education by helping make classroom instruction come to life through realistic, hands-on applications. FFA members embrace concepts taught in agricultural classrooms nationwide, build valuable skills through hands-on experiential learning and each year demonstrate their proficiencies in competitions that showcase real-world agricultural skills. Today’s FFA has evolved in response to expanded opportunities available in agriculture and its need to hire skilled and competent employees for 235 unique careers. The organization also helps students prepare for careers in business, marketing, science, communications, education, horticulture, production, natural resources, forestry and many other diverse fields. The agricultural education program provides a well-rounded, practical approach to learning through three components: classroom education, hands-on supervised agricultural career experiences and FFA, which provides leadership opportunities and tests students’ agricultural skills.
