Meet Terry Schmidt - The Piano Man When did you begin playing the piano? I was around 10 or 11 years old. I was taking piano lessons from a Mrs. Mathison for 5 years, near Brownsdale. I then switched to lessons from Mrs. Jan Muzik for 2 years in Austin. Our mother and my older brother Ron played piano which really inspired me to enjoy it and learn it too. In my 20’s while living in Burnsville I studied Music Theory and Jazz Alto Saxophone at The MacPhail Center for the Arts in Mpls.
What satisfaction/rewards do you receive from playing in front of people who enjoy what you do? It’s always satisfying to play a wide variety of songs that appeal to fans of all ages. You can get folks ranging from 25 to 75 years old sitting in the same crowd singing along with a John Lennon song, followed by a Roger Miller or Hank Williams Sr. song. I often perform at local private parties where I set up a 2nd or even 3rd microphone and encourage people to get up on stage and sing with me for added fun! I can be reached at 612-810-7157 for event & party hiring.
How long have you been in front of an audience? For 37 years. I started a band called Cresent in Bloomington back in 1982, and have played with different groups ever since. I started my solo Piano/ Vocals show around 2008.
Please take some time to enjoy one of my solo shows at the Fair Square stage this year on Tuesday 8/6 from 2:00 to 5:00 P.M. and also on Friday 8/9 from 3:00 to 6:00 P.M., or at other shows in the future around the area. ~ Terry

Favorite Fair Foods State and county fair season has arrived, and that means there will be rides and games galore. While many people are drawn to fairs by the entertainment, just as many are willing to stand in line for the unique and tasty foods that seem to embody fair and carnival fun. If it can be served on a stick or deep fried, chances are you can find it at a fair. Everything from chocolate-dipped bacon to deep-fried butter may turn up on fair stand menus. The following are some of the more coveted foods revelers can expect to find at their local fairs and carnivals. · Funnel cake: Funnel cake and it’s close cousin, zeppole, have long been fair favorites. Topped with powdered sugar, funnel cakes can be pulled apart and shared with others. · Corn dogs: Corn dogs are essentially hot dogs on a stick that have been covered in cornmeal and fried. Like funnel cakes, corn dogs have become so synonymous with fairs and carnivals that few people have ever enjoyed them anywhere outside of their local fairgrounds. · French fries: French fries are a favorite at fairs, and carnival-goers can choose from savory shoestrings to hearty steak-cut potato chunks.
· Cotton candy: What fair would be complete without a cotton candy vendor? Cotton candy is made by heating up granulated sugar until it is liquified enough to be blown into thin threads. Those threads are collected and wound into a sweet treat that is loved by kids and adults alike. · Pie: Fair-goers are likely to happen upon a pie-eating contest or pie-tasting tent. Many prefer to indulge in a piece of pie while at the fair, preferring such treats to sweeter, heavier desserts. · Corn on the cob: Corn on the cob is proof that carnivals and fairs provide some healthy fare for customers in addition to the many decadent treats on display. Corn on the cob is most popular in corn-producing areas and can be the ideal complement to burgers and other fair foods. · Anything on a stick: Each year fair vendors experiment with culinary oddities that can be served on a stick. One day it may be skewered pork chops and the next a sleeve of cookies. Those who want the full fair experience should consider trying something served on a stick.

2019 Mower County Farm Family of the Year Richard and Rosalie Carroll Dick grew up on a dairy farm just north of London in Mower County. Rosalie grew up on a dairy farm in Tillamook, Oregon. Dick attended St. Olaf College and completed ROTC training, he then enrolled in navigator school in the Air Force. It was there he met Rosalie, an Oregon State University graduate and high school teacher. Once Dick finished his service in the Air Force the Carrolls purchased a farm in Austin Township where they grew corn, soybeans, hay and oats. They also ran a farrow-to-finish hog operation and had beef cattle. The family now runs about 800 acres with 30 head of beef cows. There are a few hogs and sheep on the farm, mostly for various shows. Honeybees are a recent addition to the farm. Dick has a passion for draft horses, taking his to local events. He also uses the horses to plant and harvest crops. Dick has been an advocate for learning and trying farming practices of the Year thatFarm were notFamily only profitable, but sustainable. Dick and Rosalie have been married 52 years and
have four adopted children—two are from Korea. The Carrolls have seven grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. Dick has turned over running the farm to the Carroll’s son, John, who is transitioning the farm to organic. The Carroll’s grandson, Noah, will graduate from the University of Minnesota next year and plans to return to the farm becoming the fifth generation of the family to farm. Dick and Rosalie are active in St. Olaf Lutheran Church. They’ve also been involved in FFA and 4-H. Dick was a long-time member of the St. Mark’s Nursing Home Board. Upon retiring from teaching Rosalie volunteers at Mayo Health Systems Hospital in Austin and works as a substitute teacher in the Austin School District. The couple enjoys traveling to new places and visiting family members. Please join us in CONGRATULATING the 2019, Mower County Farm Family of the Year!

Smart Ways to Keep Kids Safe in Crowded Areas Amusement parks, beaches, tourist attractions, concerts, and local fairs attract families each year. Such outings can be exciting and enjoyable excursions, but panic sets in immediately when parents lose track of their children. It takes mere seconds for curious children to wander off, and as the minutes tick by and kids don’t return, parents may be overcome with anxiety. Many parents have lost track of their children in crowded public places. Having a plan in place can save families anxiety when traveling through crowded locations. · Take an up-to-date photo. Snap a digital head-to-toe picture the day of the trip. This can make it easier for authorities to identify lost children. In a stressful situation, parents may forget what their children were wearing when they went missing. A photo taken the day of the event can help authorities. · Dress children in bright colors. Dressing children in very bright colors makes them more visible in a crowd. Lime green, yellow and red clothing can help make children more noticeable. · Write down parental contact information. Some parents tuck a piece of paper with their cell phone numbers in their child’s pocket, while others write the number directly on a kid’s arm with a marker or pen. Some parents even apply temporary tattoos indicating their home and/or mobile numbers. Such efforts make it easy for authorities or other adults to contact parents if a child needs assistance.
ed. This may include children going up to an authority figure for help or another mother with children. Families also can choose a meetup location, such as a highly visible spot in a theme park (think roller coaster or Ferris wheel) or at the front gate. Upon arriving at your destination, go over the plan so it is fresh in everyone’s mind. · Identify people children can look to for help. Kids who were taught “stranger danger” may hesitate to go up to other people and ask for help. Parents can identify lifeguards or workers who can assist them should kids become separated from their parents. · Assign an adult to each child. It’s easy for one parent to think the other parent is watching. In a family of four, Mom might be watching Joseph while Dad is watching Caitlin. A clear plan means parents can focus their attention accordingly to keep kids safe. · Use a child safety harness. Safety harnesses can calm the nerves of parents worried about wandering toddlers. This device tethers a child to his or her parent or guardian, preventing kids from wandering off. Parents never expect to lose their children, but losing kids in crowded public places is possible. Being prepared and acting calmly can help parents quickly find their lost children.

The Basics of Raising Pigs Many people subscribe to the notion that “everything is better with bacon.” Imagine being able to control the quality and flavor of pork products, and knowing just what went into producing delicious bacon? In an era of growing uncertainty about commercially produced food, many agriculturally inclined people are raising livestock right on their properties, and small-scale pig farms can be a successful venture. Despite pigs’ reputation as dirty animals, the animal resource PetHelpful indicates they are actually one of the cleanest farm animals. Pigs tend to wallow in mud only if they do not have proper shade and a clean, steady water supply to regulate their body temperature. Furthermore, giving pigs plenty of space to roam will enable them to keep dry, clean and cool. Pens should be large enough so pigs can sleep and eat on one end and use the other end for soiling. Pigs also are intelligent animals that will adapt to routine. This means it may be easier to care for pigs than some other farm animals.
Even though pigs can grow to be quite large, they do not need to live on an expansive farm. Many pigs can live quite well on an acre if their pen and foraging areas are rotated periodically. Data from the past 50 years shows that today’s pig farms use less land and other resources to produce one pound of pork, according to the National Pork Board. Therefore, raising pigs can be a sustainable undertaking. According to Mother Earth News, when selecting pig breeds for a pig farm startup, these are popular as lean-meat producers and shouldn’t be hard to find: Yorkshire, Duroc-Jersey, Berkshire, Hampshire, Poland-China, Chester White and Tamworth. Choose sows (females) or barrows (castrated males) for the best-tasting meat. Also, keep in mind that pigs are social animals, and even though the average family will do just fine with one pig’s worth of meat, pigs do better if raised in pairs or more. Pigs need a varied diet to thrive. Diets should include grain, milk, fruits, vegetables, and greens from pasture. Experts suggest novices ask a veterinarian or another pig farmer about feeding. A family garden or bartering with other families nearby for food materials can keep feeding costs minimal. Many pigs can be butchered by the age of six or seven months. After pigs reach that age, they begin to grow quite large and become a much larger investment of time and money.
