How women can make mammograms more comfortable Mammograms help to detect breast cancer early, improving women’s prognosis as a result. Susan G. Komen states that mammography is the most effective breast cancer screening tool in use today. When women should begin getting mammograms remains open to debate. The American Cancer Society now recommends that women between the ages of 45 and 54 receive annual mammograms.

Despite the benefits of mammograms, many women avoid them out of fear of the pain and discomfort associated with the procedure. But researchers are examining how much pressure mammogram machines need to apply to get accurate breast images. Until widespread customized mammograms are offered, women can take various steps to reduce the amount of discomfort they feel while undergoing these important screening procedures. · Apply a topical numbing gel. BreastCancer.org says a study found that applying a numbing gel an hour before having a mammogram resulted in less discomfort when compared to placebo and other pain-reduction techniques. Be sure to discuss application of the gel with your physician prior to your procedure. · Schedule your procedure for the right time. Do not schedule a mammogram right before or during a menstrual cycle, when breasts already are very tender due to hormonal changes. Waiting until seven to 14 days after a period is a better bet. · Take pain relief pills. A physician may suggest taking ibuprofen or acetaminophen prior to the appointment to reduce discomfort before and after the procedure. · Speak with the technician. Women can express their concerns about pain to the mammogram technician, who might suggest various ways to minimize discomfort. · Learn about padding. Find an imaging center that uses padding on mammogram plates. MammoPad is a soft, white, single-use foam pad that is invisible to X-rays. · Avoid caffeine. Some women find that caffeine contributes to breast tenderness. Avoid caffeine the week before the procedure. Mammograms are an important health care tool. Reducing discomfort may encourage women to follow guidelines regarding mammograms more closely.

How Common is Breast Cancer? Breast cancer is the most common cancer in American women, except for skin cancers. Currently, the average risk of a woman in the United States developing breast cancer sometime in her life is about 12%. This means there is a 1 in 8 chance she will develop breast cancer. This also means there is a 7 in 8 chance she will never have the disease. Current year estimates for breast cancer The American Cancer Society’s estimates for breast cancer in the United States for 2018 are: About 266,120 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women. About 63,960 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will be diagnosed (CIS is non-invasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer). About 40,920 women will die from breast cancer. Trends in breast cancer incidence In recent years, incidence rates have been the stable in white women and increasing slightly (by 0.3% per year) African American women. Breast cancer is more common in these women, compared to women of other races/ethnicities. Trends in breast cancer deaths Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women (only lung cancer kills more women each year). The chance that a woman will die from breast cancer is about 1 in 38 (about 2.6%). Death rates from female breast cancer dropped 39% from 1989 to 2015. Since 2007, breast cancer death rates have been steady in women younger than 50, but have continued to decrease in older women. These decreases are believed to be the result of finding breast cancer earlier through screening and increased awareness, as well as better treatments. Breast cancer survivors At this time there are more than 3.1 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. This includes women still being treated and those who have completed treatment. Survival rates are discussed in the section on breast cancer survival rates by stage. Visit the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Statistics Center for more key statistics.

Early Detection is The Best Protection Signs & Symptoms Every person should know the symptoms and signs of breast cancer, and any time an abnormality is discovered, it should be investigated by a healthcare professional. Most people who have breast cancer symptoms and signs will initially notice only one or two, and the presence of these symptoms and signs do not automatically mean that you have breast cancer. By performing monthly breast self-exams, you will be able to more easily identify any changes in your breast. Be sure to talk to your healthcare professional if you notice anything unusual. A Change In How The Breast Or Nipple Feels Nipple tenderness or a lump or thickening in or near the breast or underarm area A change in the skin texture or an enlargement of pores in the skin of the breast (some describe this as similar to an orange peel’s texture) A lump in the breast (It’s important to remember that all lumps should be investigated by a healthcare professional, but not all lumps are cancerous.) A Change In The Breast Or Nipple Appearance Any unexplained change in the size or shape of the breast Dimpling anywhere on the breast
Unexplained swelling of the breast (especially if on one side only) Unexplained shrinkage of the breast (especially if on one side only) Recent asymmetry of the breasts (Although it is common for women to have one breast that is slightly larger than the other, if the onset of asymmetry is recent, it should be checked.) Nipple that is turned slightly inward or inverted Skin of the breast, areola, or nipple that becomes scaly, red, or swollen or may have ridges or pitting resembling the skin of an orange Any Nipple Discharge—Particularly Clear Discharge Or Bloody Discharge It is also important to note that a milky discharge that is present when a woman is not breastfeeding should be checked by her doctor, although it is not linked with breast cancer. What Can I Do To Reduce My Risk Of Breast Cancer? Although you cannot prevent cancer, some habits that can help reduce your risk are: Maintain a healthy weight Stay physically active Eat fruits and vegetables Do not smoke Limit alcohol consumption

The Breast Cancer Myth Drinking milk (or dairy) causes breast cancer. The Truth Several myths persist about the correlation between dairy intake and the increased risk of breast cancer. Over many decades, studies have shown that dairy consumption does not increase the risk of breast cancer. The Breast Cancer Myth Finding a lump in your breast means you have breast cancer. The Truth Only a small percentage of breast lumps turn out to be cancer. But if you discover a persistent lump in your breast or notice any changes in breast tissue, it should never be ignored. It is very important that you see a physician for a clinical breast exam. He or she may possibly order breast imaging studies to determine if this lump is of concern or not. Take charge of your health by performing routine breast self-exams, establishing ongoing communication with your doctor, getting an annual clinical breast exam, and scheduling your routine screening mammograms. The Breast Cancer Myth Men do not get breast cancer; it affects women only. The Truth Quite the contrary, each year it is estimated that approximately 2,190 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 410 will die. While this percentage is still small, men should also check themselves periodically by doing a breast self-exam while in the shower and reporting any changes to their physicians. Breast cancer in men is usually detected as a hard lump underneath the nipple and areola. Men carry a higher mortality than women do, primarily because awareness among men is less and they are less likely to assume a lump is breast cancer, which can cause a delay in seeking treatment. The Breast Cancer Myth A mammogram can cause breast cancer to spread. The Truth A mammogram, or x-ray of the breast, currently remains the gold standard for the early detection of breast cancer. Breast compression while getting a mammogram cannot cause cancer to spread. According to the National Cancer Institute, “The benefits of mammography, however, nearly always outweigh the potential harm from the radiation exposure. Mammograms require very small doses of radiation. The risk of harm from this radiation exposure is extremely low.” The standard recommendation is an annual mammographic screening for women beginning at age 40. Base your decision on your physician’s recommendation and be sure to discuss any remaining questions or concerns you may have with your physician. The Breast Cancer Myth If you have a family history of breast cancer, you are likely to develop breast cancer. The Truth While women who have a family history of breast cancer are in a higher risk group, most women who have breast cancer have no family history. Statistically only about 10% of individuals diagnosed with breast cancer have a family history of this disease. If you have a first degree relative with breast cancer: If you have a mother, daughter, or sister who developed breast cancer below the age of 50, you should consider some form of regular diagnostic breast imaging starting 10 years before the age of your relative’s diagnosis. If you have a second degree relative with breast cancer: If you have had a grandmother or aunt who was diagnosed with breast cancer, your risk increases slightly, but it is not in the same risk category as those who have a first degree relative with breast cancer. If you have multiple generations diagnosed with breast cancer on the same side of the family, or if there are several individuals who are first degree relatives to one another, or several family members diagnosed under age 50, the probability increases that there is a breast cancer gene contributing to the cause of this familial history.

Best Protection Is Early Detection
Approximately 39.6 percent of men and women in the United States will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetimes, says the National Cancer Institute. The Canadian Cancer Society states that almost half of all Canadians will develop cancer. A cancer support team can help men and women who have been diagnosed with cancer fight their disease and handle its side effects. Supportive family, friends and medical professionals can help many people cope with the emotional and physical effects of cancer. Counselors/therapists The support of a mental health professional can help cancer patients cope with the psychological impact that their disease can have. Some therapists are specially trained to treat those diagnosed with cancer. Doctors may recommend that their patients seek help with managing the emotions that can arise after a cancer diagnosis, such as depression, anxiety and confusion. Oncology social workers Certain counselors help individuals better understand their health care system and options concerning treatment. Questions regarding how to pay for care and if insurance can cover it can be a major source of stress for those with longterm illnesses like cancer. These specialty social workers can help patients navigate the system and learn what to expect. Support groups Groups offer support in various ways. Simply knowing there are others out there in similar situations can help individuals feel as though they are not alone in their fight against cancer.

Support groups can be as formal or informal as patients prefer. Such groups may simply be a group of friends who gather regularly to chat. However, there are some organizations designed specifically to provide support for cancer patients. Peer-led groups are facilitated by group members. Professionally-led groups are typically overseen by a trained medical professional. Groups may meet in person or be available through online

social networks. Some support groups may be designed for specific people, including the relatives of people with cancer, spouses, people of certain age groups, and any combination thereof. Medical staff Qualified and compassionate oncologists, nutritionists, physical therapists, nurses, and others can make cancer treatment a little easier to swallow. Find staff who are professional and knowledgeable, but also empathetic. Friends and family Of course no cancer support team would be complete without close friends and family members. These are the people who cancer patients must rely on to accompany them to appointments, run errands and offer comfort when needed. The fight against cancer is never easy, but the right support team can alleviate some of the stressors and burdens.

Did You Know? According to the American Cancer Society, certain viruses, bacteria and parasites are now recognized as risk factors for cancer. While the percentage of cancers linked to infections is higher in developing countries than it is in first world countries such as the United States, between 15 and 20 percent of cancers across the globe can be connected to infections. Infections can increase a person's risk of developing cancer in various ways. In some instances, a virus can insert its own genes into an otherwise healthy cell, causing the cell to grow out of control. In other cases, infections cause long-term inflammation in a particular area of the body, leading to changes in the affected cells and in immune cells that are nearby. Those changes can eventually lead to cancer. Certain infections can compromise the immune system to such a great extent that it is no longer capable of fully protecting the body from some cancers. While infections can increase a person's risk for cancer, the ACS notes that many people who develop the types of infections that have been linked to cancer do not ultimately receive a cancer diagnosis.
