Vacationing at Minnesota family resorts is a strong tradition for many moms, dads, kids and grandparents. But “Minnesota family vacations” have taken on new meaning too, with amusement parks, theme parks and water parks. Nature centers and state parks connect families to wildlife and outdoor learning. Fishing and hiking also add value for families that prefer nature-friendly vacations. Family fun vacations and outings include kids’ activities, and festivals and events held yearround throughout the state; many of which have their own temporary amusement parks, and provide good food and top quality entertainment.

Experience rural Minnesota, rooted in small farm towns and quiet country roads, along this route, named for a prairie flower that blooms here. The four little towns along the byway—Rose Creek, Adams, Taopi, and LeRoy— have fewer than 3,000 residents combined, keeping the area pastoral and peaceful. A paved hiking and biking trail follows the former railroad bed to Lake Louise State Park, with a picnic area and swimming beach. Hiking, boating and fishing are popular activities in the park. The trail now has 22 miles of 8 foot wide asphalt in excellent condition from the western trailhead in Rose Creek past the Adams City Park and on through Lake Louise State Park to the eastern trailhead in LeRoy. Much of the trail follows the long-abandoned railway of the Milwaukee Road which also preserves remnants of the centuries-old tall grass prairie. Delicious food service is available in Rose Creek, Adams and LeRoy with choices of fine dining, down-home cooking, and take out.

Mantorville
Historic Mantorville is located in southeast Minnesota, along the South Branch of the Middle Fork of the Zumbro River, in a landscape of rolling hills amid the prairie farm land of Dodge County. Known as the source for Mantorville Limestone, its rich history is evident by the limestone buildings in the historic downtown area. The Mantorville Historic District, along with other locations outside of the District, is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Many of the original limestone buildings remain viable to the community today. Mantorville is home to the historic Hubbell House and is the county seat of Dodge County.

Bluff Country
is the “hub” of the Root River Trail System and all of its associated activities. Visitors find a thriving downtown featuring many buildings listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Lanesboro’s claim to fame is Buffalo Bill Cody, a resident in the mid-1800s. An active arts community thrives here, complete with professional theatre, art galleries, and entertainment. In 2004, Lanesboro was named a “Top 20 Dream Town” by Outside Magazine. By far, the top attraction is the Root River Trail, but Lanesboro is home to great canoeing and kayaking, fishing, hiking, and golf. With many top lodging, dining, and shopping opportunities, a trip to Lanesboro is a must-do for trail visitors.

This paved, 42-mile state trail begins in Fountain and runs through the quaint and picturesque rural communities of Lanesboro, Whalan, Peterson, Rushford and Houston. Constructed on an abandoned railroad, the trail is generally level and wheelchair accessible. The Lost Creek Hiking Trail was built and is maintained by the Bluff Country Hiking Club. Work on the trail was started in February of 2011 with the official trail opening in October of 2011. The trail offers a wide range of terrain and ecosystems including forest, prairie, pasture, and agricultural land. The trail runs approximately 6 miles one way. The goal of the trail is to provide residents and visitors opportunities for recreation and education while enjoying the scenery and wildlife of our area. The trail is open to the public with use limited to hiking and snowshoeing, as the trail surface is natural soil and grass.
