Snooker rules can drive people crazy at times! I have seen many a game where there has been a full scale argument and a long stoppage in play whilst the two protagonists have a heated debate over who is right or wrong on a point of play. Snooker rules have evolved over the years to the point where there are so many that it is not easy for one man to possibly know every little detail. The game of snooker was developed in the late 19th Century and was created by officers of the British army that were stationed in India at the time. A snooker was a term which referred to a first year army cadet. Snooker rules have developed from this period in time and are now under the governing body of the World Professional Billiards And Snooker Association. The great thing about the game is that many of the players regulate it themselves. For instance, if someone is playing a shot and he accidentally brushes his arm against another ball, more often than not that player will own up to this so that the shot will be classed as a foul shot, so his opponent will receive points and it will now be his opponents turn to play a shot. Can you imagine this happening in a football game?! I think not. The game is still known as one for gentlemen to play, and the majority of players try to stick to the rules and play as fair as possible. Some snooker rules will be commonly known, such as having to keep at least one foot in contact with the floor when you are playing a shot. Others may not be so well known, such as there is a penalty of seven points if, after potting a red, a player commits a foul before nominating a colour. Snooker is a fascinating game that is addictive, infuriating and enjoyable in equal measure.
