Caliterra was founded in 1996 as part of the Chilean wine industry’s first joint venture, formed between the Robert G. Mondavi family and Viña Errázuriz, who shared the dream of producing high quality, environmentally friendly wines. Today Viña Caliterra is the reflection of the quality (calidad) and unique land (tierra), along with the sustainable farming practices that allow the vines to express our Chilean roots, and the traditions of the Colchagua Valley.
COLCHAGUA VALLEY The founders were visionaries in identifying the potential of the Colchagua Valley and choosing it to create this winery. In its geography and Mediterranean climate, with cold nights and soft breezes to temper the energy of the sun, they discovered a unique terroir that allowed them to realize their dream of producing exceptional wines.

UNIQUE VINEYARD The Caliterra vineyard is a sub-valley that is especially protected and privileged, in terms of its natural resources. It consists of a little more than 1,000 hectares, of which 75% remains untouched , while the 250 hectares were planted with strict care for the soil and environment with a commitment to sustainable farming. The tremendous diversity of its soil types, elevations and exposures make this terroir a unique place to produce elegant, well-structured, and balanced wines.
OUR PHILOSOPHY Since its beginnings, ViĂąa Caliterra has focused on making high quality wines, while embracing a sustainable philosophy. We are actively concerned with environmentally friendly production and in caring for our natural resources to promote a balanced ecosystem full of life on the estate, respect with the land as well as maintaining a fairer and more responsible relationship with society and our communities to ensure a better future for coming generations.
BIRDS OF PREY PROGRAM In 2013 Caliterra launched an unprecedented program for plague control in vineyards -mainly rabbits and rodents- through conservation and repopulation of birds of prey such as eagles, hawks, vultures, pygmy owls, Harris’s hawks, owls and kestrels. The birds of prey are natural predators of rabbits and rodents plagues, which for hydration bite the trunks of the vines, extracting water from the plants, which then wither and die, causing irreversible damage. In particular, the program implicates the construction of nest boxes or shelters, and feeders made of recycled materials for all birds of prey, encouraging their permanence in the property and enabling them to repopulate naturally.
SUSTAINABLE VITICULTURE Viña Caliterra was a pioneer in developing sustainable viticulture in Chile and created a protocol of the practices it implemented in its vineyards to reinforce its philosophy. These practices later served as the foundation of the National Code for Sustainable Certification offered by Vinos de Chile for the country’s wine industry. This certification verifies that the winery has implemented a number of sustainable viticultural techniques, such as organic phytosanitary program, use of biological corridors, and optimization of energy and water resources, reincorporation of organic matter, precision agriculture, and waste treatment.

ENVIRONMENTAL PRESERVATION Our strong alliance with nature leads us to protect and conserve the area surrounding our vineyards. Wild horses and alpacas run freely through our native forests and naturally control the growth of weeds, which helps prevent forest fires. We also take special care to preserve the native flora and fauna in our sub-valley because of their great contributions to the character and unique identity that the biodiversity lends to our vineyard’s terroir.
COMMITMENT TO THE COMMUNITY We work closely with the Colchagua Valley community. Our commitment to our neighbors and our workers includes workplace training and skills programs as well as sponsorship for rural schools and students. We also support groups that promote the traditions and culture of Colchagua and our country.
OUR WINES
Our icon wine takes its name from the highest point in the sky. Every December 21st the southern hemisphere experiences the longest day of the year, the summer solstice. That is the day the sun reaches its zenith (Cenit in Spanish) over our vineyard, and Caliterra celebrates by making the final blend. Cenit reflects the best of each vintage and the bond of knowledge and work. It is a unique wine from the Caliterra valley in Colchagua, which rests for 24 long months in French oak barrels. An extended ageing time that allows our Cenit to reach greatest elegance and complexity.

Integrating our ancestral but also innovative view on the winemaking process in 2013 we first explored the carbonic maceration technique. Whereas the results were outstanding in 2014 we developed this technique for all varieties. This distinctive wine highlights everything that the carbonic maceration technique can contribute: deep color, intensely aromatic, fruity. The glass revealed all the potential of this technique applied to the grapes from our unique terroir.
Our Reserva range introduces wine lovers to Caliterra’s world and philosophy. These wines represent years of search and improvement of our terroir. In each bottle, we combine the uniqueness of Caliterra sub-valley and the tipicity of every variety creating a family of fresh and fruity wines, easy to drink and ideal for enjoying at every occasion.

Viña Caliterra is the first Chilean winery to achieve this certification thanks to an extensive native forest located within its property. The woodland allowed Viña Caliterra to obtain its certification without the need of buying carbon credits. The certification involves all the organization’s operational activities, including the distribution to the countries of retail sales.
