Since our beginning, Mounds Park Academy has been committed to educating the whole child by promoting a balance between arts, academics, and athletics. This edition of MPA Now focuses on athletics, physical education, and time to play. We believe that academic preparation is but one aspect of education, and that the artistic, physical, social, and emotional development of each child is equally important. Research confirms that students perform better in school when they are emotionally and physically healthy. They miss fewer days, are less likely to engage in risky or antisocial behavior, concentrate better, and attain higher test scores. Athletics, physical education, and time to play are more important now than ever. With childhood and adolescent stress, anxiety, and depression on the rise, research demonstrates that more physical activity predicted fewer symptoms of major depression. Additionally, researchers believe that increasing physical activity may prevent and treat childhood depression. Physical activity is also an important gateway to learning, promoting growth in many areas defined as 21st century skills, including communication, empathy, self-regulation, creativity, imagination, and problem solving. Children become able to make decisions, confront uncertainty, overcome fears, and learn to work together. The World Health Organization and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommend that children and youth engage in a minimum of 60 minutes per week of physical activity. A recent study, however, found that three-fourths of children in the United States are not meeting that guideline. As a point of comparison, MPA Middle School students spend an average of 187.5 minutes per week in physical education, enjoy 25 minutes per day for recess, and nearly all participate in a club, activity, or sport. Unfortunately, educational policy and practice in recent years, in both public and private schools, has led to a narrowing definition of student success measured by standardized assessment. As a result, recess and physical education have been cut to make time for high-stakes testing and preparation. Not at MPA. We remain true to our mission and steadfast to our commitment to educating the whole child. Mounds Park Academy.

At MPA, we move, we play, and we get sweaty. Whether it’s on the playground, one of the Lansing Center’s four courts, or the athletic fields, we are actively striving to push our limits in endurance, strength, agility, and quickness. And that’s how it’s always been. The school was founded in 1982 upon the belief that children would be successful if their whole beings were nurtured. So, from the very beginning, physical education was an important curricular offering. Katrina Stoltz was MPA’s first and only physical education teacher, and also served as athletic director for the competitive teams that MPA initially offered: Co-Ed Soccer, Boys and Girls Basketball, and Boys and Girls Track and Field. “Our goal in physical education has always been to help students find the joy of being active—maybe they will become a distance runner to stay in shape or play on an intramural basketball team to meet new people. And we have always really emphasized how they should carry themselves in those settings—with class and sportsmanship,” says Dave McGaha, physical education faculty member and coach since 1983. As MPA grew through the mid ’80s, so too did the competitive athletic programs. “By the fall of 1989, the school was bursting at the seams,” says Joe Kordosky, MPA’s athletic director from 1989 to 2017. “We were oozing with energy and looking to grow all of our programs.” However, the obstacles were great. The facility was holding the school back and preventing membership in an athletic conference. The Kreischer Gym had a tile floor and the outdoor track was made of cinders. “What we lacked in facilities, we had in parent involvement and enthusiasm,” Kordosky explains. “The very first Best of MPA [now known as the Spring Auction], supported the transformation of the Kreischer Gym floor, helping us enter the Tri Valley Conference.” The school’s first conference championship came in the spring of 1994 when the Girls Track and Field Team, who were still practicing on the cinder track, won. MPA is now a proud member of the Independent Metro Athletic Conference and throughout its history has achieved 20 individual State Championships and nine team State Championships—all with a no-cut policy that encourages everyone who is interested to participate. Many parents continued to come forward to support the growth of MPA athletics. In 2006, gifts from the Lansing and McKeown families led the way toward the state-of-the-art facilities we enjoy today. “We thought the skills, lessons, and health benefits for all students could be game changers in their lives. When families make a decision to support an institution with a contribution, one hopes that the intent blossoms into reality throughout the following years. We are humbled to see the innumerable and creative ways that the athletics staff, faculty, administration, parents, and all students have embraced what it can offer, and are truly using it with great success,” says Tom Lansing, parent of alumnae. The idea that athletics are for all students is uniquely MPA. “Our kids don’t have to specialize here, because if you want to run track, there’s a place for you. If you want to play basketball, there’s a place for you,” says McGaha. Here, students do not need to choose between their passions and will always find a place on a team. “To me, the coolest thing is the real opportunity kids have to get involved here. They get a taste, develop some passion, and all of a sudden they are Declan Dahlberg [a multi-sport State Champion]. The opportunity at MPA is real,” says Kordosky.

HOMECOMING 2017 Homecoming brought the MPA community together for one lively, sunny, and successful weekend. From the joyful squeals of Lower School students bouncing in the bounce houses to the nostalgic chatter of alums catching up, everyone expressed an incredible sense of school spirit, both on and off campus. “I could feel the excitement in the air as the MPA community was engaged in so many aspects of our celebration,” says Dan Haase, MPA athletic director. “The highlight for me was the third and fourth graders singing the national anthem at the volleyball and soccer games. They sang to a large fan base at both venues and did such a wonderful job. Those kids are the future of MPA athletics!” It started with energetic spirit days during the week, where students wore everything from slippers and pajamas to capes and face paint. The end of the week led to the wild all-school pep rally and later, Friday night's Alumni Happy Hour. Saturday's festivities brought Panthers, families, and friends for food trucks, fun runs, and to cheer on MPA teams all morning and afternoon. The Girls Tennis Team took first in their tournament, winning over Cretin-Derham Hall 5–2 and then Woodbury High School 4–3. The Girls Volleyball Team also finished in first place, adding four additional wins to their record. The Girls and Boys Soccer Teams both trailed by one goal, but finished hard in the scorching afternoon heat. The celebration ended with the Upper School dance and Milestone Reunion on Saturday night. The classes of '92, '93, '02, '03, '12, and '13 gathered to reconnect and reminisce with their classmates that evening.

WHEN DID YOU COME TO MPA AND WHAT WAS THE TRANSITION LIKE? I came to MPA when I was in kindergarten and I remember how great Ms. Petersen was because she always made me feel comfortable. I also remember that we were the “sports class” and we had to make cut-outs of ourselves playing our favorite sport for the beginning of the year. I decided to make a cut-out of me playing soccer and that was a great start to my MPA journey.

For more than three decades, MPA has engaged thousands of students in a transformative college-preparatory education that empowers them to think independently, act with integrity, and achieve their goals. MPA has been a springboard for our students’ ongoing success, allowing alumni to excel in their chosen fields while remaining deeply connected to MPA’s entrepreneurial spirit.

A Message From the Alumni Board Chair Dear MPA Alumni, I am once again blown away by what MPA alumni can do, and the impact they can have on their community. Alumni participation for the 2016–17 year far exceeded my expectations, and I want to share some highlights: 27 percent of alumni who participated in the Alumni Challenge had never given to the campaign, and 44 percent had not given in three or more years. We raised just over $23,799 for the Alumni Challenge, which was more than a $5,000 increase from the previous year. Finally, overall alumni giving participation grew from 10 percent to 13 percent, which is higher than the national average! Thank you so much, Panthers!

I hope you will all join me in celebrating our success from last year, but also look toward the future success of MPA. As MPA continues to grow and change, it needs the support of the entire community—especially of alumni! I encourage you to see it as a privilege to be able to make sure MPA is here for generations to come. As a PreK teaching assistant, I work with MPA students as they are beginning their educational journey, and within our class of 14 I see the impact your donations, time, and resources have on our students. Our work in the classroom would not be possible without your support.

Soccer at MPA is a Common Thread Nicholas Guiang '18 is continuing the tradition set by his three older brothers to play soccer for MPA—and doing it with gusto. Like his siblings, he’s experienced both individual and team awards, but best of all, his older brother Matt is head coach of his team. Soccer has been a passion of the Guiangs and played a role in challenging and channeling Andrew ’08, Matthew '11, Eric '14, and Nicholas. In fact, 2017 marks the 17th straight year that one of them has played in an MPA jersey. All four played soccer with another brother at some point during their time at MPA—often on championship teams. Aside from the great experiences offered through sports, all four brothers feel grateful for opportunities to participate in music and academic pursuits, helping them become more well-rounded individuals. As Andrew notes, the experience “better prepared [them] for everything that came after MPA.” This reflects values that their parents—Dr. Jennifer Mehmel and Dr. Sixto (“Ex”) Guiang—emphasized in

Turpin Sisters Innovate in the Arts Kelly '04 and Hannah '07 Turpin (left and right respectively), both members of MPA’s Joanne Olson 13-Year Club, recall their MPA experiences as nurturing and engaging. They hold fond and playful memories of teachers, peers, and the larger PreK–12 community that included their mother Ellen, who was on staff. Following passions sparked at MPA, it is no surprise that they found meaningful careers in the arts. Kelly is company director at Mill City Summer Opera in Minneapolis and still performs as a solo recitalist and chorus member for Minnesota Opera and other regional companies. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Ithaca College and Master of Arts in music from Arizona State University in opera performance. Hannah is curatorial assistant for modern and contemporary art and photography at Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, with a passion for feminist and queer theories and representations in modern and contemporary art. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts from Denison University and a Master of Arts in art history from NYU’s Institute of Fine Arts. Beyond having interesting, established careers in the arts, it is especially impressive that both sisters are engaged in community building and social activism, using their roles to illuminate important issues during these times of social and political change. As Hannah says, “MPA taught me about being open-minded, the values of dignity and respect, the importance of challenging yourself and others to work toward a progressive future—all things I acknowledge cannot be taken for granted.” As a curator, she is particularly drawn to creating community conversations and exploring the power of art and artists’ voices—values that came with her MPA education. Kelly also exudes the spirit of innovation in how she lives the school’s motto of dream big and do right. “Immersed in the arts, it’s hard not to dream big. Ideas of projects and possibilities are always formulating. Running an opera company and working as a performer, it’s my responsibility to showcase art and choose projects that strive to strengthen our society. I am committed to making an impact in the communities I touch. Though there’s a lot of death and despair in most operatic tales, love always trumps hate, and I see the arts as a way to remind others of that truth.” Outside of their busy working lives, both sisters enjoy traveling with their partners, relaxing, re-energizing, and soaking up what life has to offer.

WHEN DID YOU JOIN THE MPA COMMUNITY? I first came to MPA in 2008 as a student teacher from the University of St. Thomas and as the Junior Varsity Girls Soccer coach. I was also a substitute teacher at MPA in 2009–10 before moving on to my first teaching job in Mountain Lake, Minn. I came back to MPA in 2015 as an assistant coach for the Varsity Boys Basketball Team. I was hired as a full-time physical education teacher for the 2017–18 school year and am currently co-head coach with Mike Scinto of the Varsity Girls Soccer Team. WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO MPA? Longtime MPA faculty member Sue Samuelson was one of my professors at the University of St. Thomas and invited me to come to complete my student teaching experience with the physical education teachers at MPA. I was amazed by the friendly faculty and staff, the engaged students, and the beautiful facilities. I have enjoyed staying connected to the community since then. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MPA MOMENT? Last winter, the Boys Varsity and Junior Varsity Basketball Teams took a trip to Duluth for a game against Marshall. It was a close game, but MPA pulled out the win. Not only was the game memorable, but it was a great team-bonding experience that included going to Lake Superior and eating dinner at Grandma’s. WHAT’S YOUR SECRET TALENT? I’ve got a really good eye for spotting wildlife. If my family is out for a walk, bike ride, or kayaking, I love to spot turtles, eagles, deer, and other creatures along the way. WHAT’S A LITTLE-KNOWN FACT ABOUT YOU? My wife, Clare Halloran, is an MPA alum from the class of 2003. We met as assistant coaches for the Girls Varsity Soccer Team in 2009. Head coaches at the time—Mike Scinto and Al Greimel—were very proud of their matchmaking

skills. We welcomed our first daughter, Norah, to our family this past August.

Mr. Sheehan is one of five physical education and health teachers at MPA who brings fun, unique experiences to classes PreK–12.

Meet the Goodno Family As the parents of three girls, Sara ’16, senior Abby, and sophomore Katelyn, Kevin and Linda Goodno came to MPA in 2009 for challenge at appropriate, individualized levels. They found that in the classrooms and through athletics, specifically basketball and soccer. Kevin shares, “They’ve all found athletics as a way to develop skills, be part of a team, and be part of the broader community. The social interaction with older students helped them mature and be more confident in themselves.” Grateful for what MPA has provided their girls, Kevin and Linda are quick to volunteer and are generous with their gifts to the school. “Clearly, if you are making contributions, all students are benefiting from that. But you are also showing your own children the importance of being involved in the community, and setting an example for how to leave the places you are a part of in a better position than how you found them,” says Kevin. MPA is so grateful for the many ways the Goodno family contributes to this community—both on and off the courts and fields!

Meet DeeDee Stacy Fourth grade teacher DeeDee Stacy came to MPA in 1989 and is the parent of two alumnae, Greta ’11 and Emma ’15. She has given to MPA in so many generous ways, most publicly as the Swim Club coach since 2004 (see page seven). “I make the choices that I make about my time because I am passionate about what I do. Beyond the classroom, all of us faculty members have passions we choose to share—for some people it is the art shows they take the kids to, for some it is coaching athletics—and for me, it was trying to establish a swim program for our youngest kids,” DeeDee shares. Uniquely positioned as both a teacher and a parent of alumni, she wholeheartedly believes that students need to see their teachers going above and beyond because that is what is expected of them. “I recognize the hours that others have put in for my own children in speech, debate, drama, art, music, athletics, and academics. I know what that extra mile meant to my girls. I hope to give that same feeling to all of our current students.”

Spring Auction

Besides being a great deal of fun, the MPA Spring Auction is our largest community event and only fundraiser. Thanks to the generous MPA community, we raised more than $160,000 at the 2017 auction. There are two primary functions of the auction. First, it is an opportunity for all parents, alumni, faculty, and friends to build community and to celebrate our common interest in education. Second, it is an opportunity to raise much needed funds. Thank you to our 2017 Spring Auction donors!
