“Bad libraries build collections, good libraries build services, great libraries build communities.” — R. David Lankes Dear Friends: At Madison Public Library and Madison Public Library Foundation, we recognize the valuable role libraries can play in responding to community needs. Every year, we work harder to ensure that everyone in our community can rely on the library for services, programs and resources that give them the skills they need for a successful, enriched life. The City of Madison budget provides funding for basic library services. The foundation then steps in to take our libraries from good to great. Last year, the foundation spent $878,600 to support Madison Public Library services and programs. And that number doesn’t even count more than $800,000 raised for the new Pinney Library. We accomplished so many wonderful things in 2015. Here’s a snapshot of some of our achievements: A new kitchen and community room at Meadowridge Library. The foundation and library celebrated the opening of the kitchen and community room shared by Meadowridge Library and the Meadowood Neighborhood Center last summer. Community members identified the kitchen as a priority during the planning process, and it’s now the site of cooking classes, community suppers, a senior meal program, an after-school snack program and summer meals for children in the free and reduced lunch program. Kickoff of The Capital Campaign for a New Pinney Library. The foundation launched a $2.5 million community campaign on Giving Tuesday, December 1, for the first east side capital project in more than 10 years. Commitment to equity. In conjunction with our City’s Racial Equity and Social Justice Initiative, the library is stepping up its efforts to provide equitable — not equal — service to all of Madison. Through initiatives such as Black Story Hour, English for Parents, and Tell Us, we used feedback from our communities of color to design programs that connect residents to each other and to library resources through shared goals and interests. Providing services outside library walls. Parents as First Teachers provides early literacy training to Public Health of Madison & Dane County nurses. By training nurses to become early literacy advocates and sharing materials with families through a trusted connection, the library is reaching audiences that typically are not aware of or able to use library services. Tell Us: Communities Inspiring Libraries. This community-based planning process included 52 conversations with small groups of people in the community to complete a story that census and library usage didn’t provide. Discussions highlighted community values and dreams, and reached many under-represented groups. We hope you’ll read on to see stories and photos of all the great work in our libraries. And to all who supported the library last year, THANK YOU. You’re helping us build better libraries — and a better community — every day.

Grants Awarded: $56,000 Black Story Hour, $4,200: This grant allowed for the creation of the first Black Story Hour at the Goodman South Madison Library. The program helped African-American families develop the skills to teach their children to read in a culturally relevant and exciting way, with the intent to improve literacy and better serve the African-American community.

Above: Black Story Hour at Goodman South Madison Library, Below: Read Up joint programming with United Way and Madison Metropolitan School District

Services to Spanish speakers: Spanish programming and relationship-building dramatically improved, as well as increased use and expansion of Spanish language materials at the library. More than 600 books in Spanish were purchased, and the library was able to start a professional materials collection in Spanish for use during bilingual programs. Read Up K-12 Literacy: Read Up at Madison Public Library began in summer 2014 at two Madison Metropolitan School District sites, aiming to improve students’ summer reading habits and prevent the “summer slide.” This program expanded in 2015 to double the number of children served, from 250 to 500. Each child also took home five self-selected titles to build a personal library at home.

Etsy Craft Entrepreneurship Program: Etsy, a leading online marketplace for handcrafted goods, launched a four-week Craft Entrepreneurship pilot course that helps artists, crafters and designers learn to sell their products online. The foundation grant gave Madison Public Library a chance to be one of the first libraries to offer these courses, which filled up quickly and proved popular. Right: Etsy Craft Entrepreneurship course instruction, led by Digital Media Lab instructor Nate Clark at Central Library

Media Lab Mentorships: The Media Lab at Central Library relies heavily on volunteer instructors and open lab assistants, and was struggling with attendance and cancellation issues. The funds allowed the library to pay six professional-level instructors a small stipend, which decreased the number of instructor cancellations and ultimately resulted in more Media Lab programming. High-Traffic Collections Support: The library added nearly 300 teen and children’s movie DVDs, as well as LEGO Club books and extra copies of extremely popular books and media. Yahara Music Library: This local music library expanded and diversified its collection of rock, hip-hop, classical, jazz and other genres while working to raise its visibility among music lovers and musicians. Teen Interns: The library expanded this popular program beyond Central Library to its eight neighborhood libraries. Interns assisted with programming, took on marketing tasks and worked behind the scenes to support library staff. Library Staff Day: This annual inservice day brought together staff to share ideas, understand best practices, celebrate successes and learn how to better serve the community. Free Library of Philadelphia Director Siobhan Reardon was the guest speaker.

Professional Development & Director’s Discretionary Fund: These funds supported library staff to network and learn best practices through continuing education opportunities, library conferences and more. Three staff members had an opportunity to travel to Aarhus, Denmark, where they shared their award-winning ideas at the NEXT LIBRARY® conference.

Pop! Challenge: $20,000 With crowdsourcing on the rise, foundation leadership came up with an idea to offer library patrons the chance to suggest how a portion of 2015 grant dollars should be spent. Named the Pop! Challenge in the spirit of the Bubbler, the foundation asked library users for their best ideas on how to spend up to $20,000 in grant funds. Foundation and library staff worked together to choose the following three winning ideas: • strengthening and promoting materials and programming to represent underrepresented library populations ($7,500). The library is increasing world language materials and is able to better promote the collection. It has also added cultural programming.

• a computer coding class targeting youth who are underrepresented in the computer science and technology fields ($5,000).

• community suppers in the new Meadowridge Library kitchen for neighborhood residents and area groups ($7,500). Meals for southwest side residents and Madison seniors began in winter 2015 and continue throughout 2016. Neighborhood residents come together while engaging local youth, who assist in prepping, serving and cleaning up after the meals so they can earn a small stipend. The gatherings build connections among residents, neighborhood leaders and library staff.

“While our annual grants are made possible through the generosity of our many donors, the Pop! Challenge project allowed Madisonians to be generous with their ideas,” said foundation Executive Director Jenni Collins. “We’re excited to share the many ways that these gifts of money and ingenuity will make the library experience better for everyone.” Right: Foundation Executive Director Jenni Collins announcing the winning ideas in the $20,000 Pop! Challenge contest at Madison Public Library’s summer concert and picnic at Olbrich Gardens

Wisconsin Book Festival The Wisconsin Book Festival, presented by Madison Public Library in partnership with Madison Public Library Foundation, drew a record number of book lovers to Central Library and downtown Madison over the fall festival weekend and throughout the year. Festival-goers enjoyed 199 free events featuring authors in all genres, from young adult fiction to nonfiction to poetry and short stories. They included Kevin Henkes, Azar Nafisi, Timothy Egan, Mary Norris, Evan Thomas, Robert Reich, David Maraniss, Nickolas Butler, Adam Johnson, Kim Blaeser, Sarah Vowell and Jesse Eisenberg. Festival events are made possible through more than $115,000 in private donations to the Foundation, including event sponsors and Book Fest Benefactors. This year’s festival will be October 20–23. Photobook collector George Slade donated books as part of the FlakPhoto project at Central Library. Here, FlakPhoto organizer Andy Adams (center) displays the contributed books. Fundraising Events Total raised: $133,926 / Total guests: 1,430 Library supporters wholeheartedly embraced the foundation’s three signature fundraising events, which attracted more guests and brought in more dollars than ever that allow the foundation to support Madison Public Library and the Wisconsin Book Festival. Acclaimed food writer and six-time James Beard Award winner Ruth Reichl headlined Lunch for Libraries and inspired an add-on cocktail party fundraiser, Meet the Make-Hers, which also featured notable local women in the culinary arts. All proceeds went toward Wisconsin Book Festival programming.

The foundation’s largest fundraiser, Ex Libris Vol. V: Beer for Brunch, had a new menu twist, pairing craft beers with breakfast-themed cuisine. Guests were treated to live music, a DJ, a bloody Mary bar, a silent auction of rare items and a Gail Ambrosius chocolate bar raffle. Guests enjoy craft beer at Ex Libris Vol. V: Beer for Brunch

A gorgeous sunny day made the second annual Rock & Read fundraiser at Capital Brewery a great success. Fresh off making it to the NCAA tournament final, former Wisconsin Badgers basketball coach Bo Ryan drew a crowd and signed autographs while sharing his passion for reading. Guest enjoyed burgers, ice cream, live music and, of course, Capital Brewery beer.

CAPITAL PROJECTS Meadowridge Kitchen, Community Room Open: Those who use Meadowridge Library on the city’s southwest side now have a new commercial kitchen and community room where they can enjoy food-related programs and events. The neighborhood celebrated the space’s opening with a community open house last summer. The new kitchen and community room — which sit between the library and the Meadowood Neighborhood Center, and are shared — have quickly become a popular spot for senior meals, community potlucks, after-school snacks, community group meetings and much more. The library is one of just a few in the U.S. that has a kitchen. There is a clear demand for food services in the Meadowood neighborhood, where a significant number of residents are on food stamps and struggle with paying for groceries. The library, neighborhood center and Madison Metropolitan School District have teamed up to offer a joint After-School Snack Program that teaches kids and teens how to prepare nutritious snacks, and other programs are in the works to serve different groups. “We just have so many kids in the neighborhood who need an evening meal,” Library Supervisor Alice Oakey said. The kitchen, funded by the city of Madison and Madison Public Library Foundation’s Meadowridge capital campaign, is also used to serve potluck-style community suppers using $7,500 in Pop! Challenge grant funds from the foundation. The suppers — held the last Tuesday evening of the month through this summer — build connections between residents, library staff, police and community leaders. Kids learn to prepare snacks in Meadowridge Library’s kitchen and community room

Pinney Campaign Kicks Off on Giving Tuesday: Madison Public Library Foundation launched its $2.5 million Capital Campaign for a New Pinney Library on Giving Tuesday, December 1, with a Kickoff Party at the east side Harmony Bar. Giving Tuesday is the Tuesday after Thanksgiving that’s dedicated to making charitable contributions in place of holiday shopping. The foundation invited library supporters to the event to build excitement for their investment in a brighter future for the east side. The $10 million Pinney Library, which will be located in the Royster Corners mixed-use development, will be double its current size, with improved spaces for youth, an outdoor event area, a drive-through book drop and better technology. The library will reach a growing number of residents near Pinney who are underserved, especially children. Lau & Bea Christensen, Madison Gas & Electric Foundation and an anonymous donor provided a $75,000 challenge grant to kick off the campaign. More than $800,000 was raised for the new library by the end of 2015. Members of the local band Treemo at the Campaign Kickoff Party

Engaging Teens Madison Public Library programs are helping teens learn critical literacy and digital literacy skills while also allowing the City of Madison to address racial disparities in teen employment and educational success. Through the Wanda Fullmore Youth Internship program, eight teens interned at the library over the summer. They assisted with library programming and activities, Summer Reading Clubs, the Summer Reading Carnival and concert, Media Lab activities, Tell Us community planning sessions, newsletter article writing and social media management. For some teens, this was their first paid job. Library staff served as mentors and coaches. Teen Bubbler’s hands-on pop-up workshops introduced participants to a variety of creative outlets by collaborating with local artists and makers who shared their talents and physical resources. Partners change continually to keep the experiences current and dynamic, allowing the library to offer workshops in all nine libraries and at partner locations.

Teens work together on a mural

One unique teen collaboration, Making Justice, is a community-based program for court-involved teens that includes weekly workshops and an artist-in-residence opportunity. It addresses the wide black/white educational achievement gap and high per-capita black juvenile arrest and incarceration rate. Offered in collaboration with a diverse spectrum of artists, educators and activists, Making Justice fosters community engagement and self-expression via graphic and 3D art, photography, spoken word, performance, video and life skills projects. Teens’ completed projects are displayed in libraries, showcased at film events and now have their own web site — teenbubbler.org — where visitors can view the projects and learn more about the library’s many partnerships with organizations that serve Dane County youth. By identifying work with teens as a strategic priority for the library, it has realized a 116 percent increase in teen programming over the last three years, with 80 percent of programming targeting low-income, racially diverse students.

LIBRARY AWARDS EARNED IN 2015 • WCREW Vision Award for Achievement (Meadowridge Library/Meadowood Neighborhood Center) • Madison Magazine’s The M List: Social Innovation (Trent Miller, Bubbler Manager) • Institute of Museum and Library Services National Medal Finalist • Library Journal Landmark Library (Central Library) • Wisconsin Innovation Award: Arts Category (The Bubbler) • Library Journal Mover & Shakers (Trent Miller, Bubbler Manager) • Brava Women to Watch (Krissy Wick, Youth Services Supervisor)

ArtistS-in-Residence The library gets an extra boost of energy, creativity and collaboration from the rotation of artists and makers using Central Library’s Bubbler room as their studio for the Artist-in-Residence program. In 2015, the program received funding through a two-year grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Artists use the multi-month residency to work on projects in a public setting and engage visitors in hands-on learning. The design of Central Library also allows for a rotating display of installations created by each artist in residence — where the building itself becomes the canvas for sculpture, interactive art installations, and artistic surprises — allowing visitors to discover new art with each visit. Many artists-in-residence teach workshops at Madison’s neighborhood libraries during or after their residency at the Central Library. Top: Artist-in-Residence Craig Grabhorn performs screenprinting during one of The Bubbler’s NIGHT LIGHT events at the Central Library. Bottom: Community members gather to engage in dialogue about issues surrounding social justice and oppression, and creat a collaborative collage over a series of weeks, organized by resident artist Rain Wilson.

Bicycle Bookmobile The Library Foundation helped the library secure grants to fund a new bicycle-powered micro-library, named Spoke-n-words, to expand the library’s reach while bringing collections and services to residents in unexpected places. The bicycle bookmobile was designed by Jon Edwards and fabricated by Badger Diversified Metals. It’s powered by a custom-built bike from Revolution Cycles. All parts and labor were paid for with grants secured by the foundation from BMO Harris Bank, Madison Rotary Foundation and the Dane County Bicycle Association. Spoke-n-words hauls a small collection of library materials and serves as a place for visitors to check out materials, apply for a library card, attend story times and participate in art projects. “The Spoke-nwords initiative gives Madison Public Library an intimate way to connect with communities throughout the city,” said Michael Spelman, program organizer and Central Library manager. The Spoke-n-words mobile micro-library brings services and collections to residents throughout the city.
