STRATEGIC INITIATIVES Madison Public Library • Communicate the library’s vision and mission (see p.2). • Map core services based on community needs. • Adapt staffing and organizational structure to address the changing role of libraries. • Develop diverse funding strategies. • Plan for space and facilities, based on community needs. • Enhance communications, marketing and public relations. Right: New library iPads, paid for with 2014 foundation grant funds
Madison Public Library Foundation • Grow the foundation’s unrestricted funds to meet annual operating needs and help expand the permanent endowment. • Successfully complete capital and other special campaigns, including significant growth of the permanent endowment, to eventually meet annual operating expenses from interest and investment income. • Develop and enhance engagement and leadership strategies that increase foundation visibility, build stronger relations to all segments of the Madison community, and promote innovation in joint library/foundation programs. • Maintain and enhance organization-building strategies that promote the foundation’s health and long-term sustainability. Dear Friends: When the Pew Research Center recently released some key facts and trends* about American libraries, it seemed like a natural time to for our library and foundation staff to compare the data with what’s happening inside our own public library system. We’re happy to report that not only are we keeping up with libraries throughout the nation, but we’re surpassing them in many cases. While Madison Public Library has always offered the basic services — free materials, computer and technology availability, databases, youth programs and literacy efforts — to residents, we’ve worked hard to take that next step and become a national leader through innovation and community engagement. The Pew report showed there are an increasing number of people reading eBooks and using tablets. There’s a stronger demand for safe, quiet reading spaces. Most of those surveyed — more than 80 percent — want their library to work with the public school system to provide free literacy programs to young children. In the past year, the library and foundation have partnered to respond to a growing interest in eBooks and tablets. A $6,200 foundation grant paid for new iPads at multiple locations, and an extremely successful Meadowridge Library capital campaign allowed the foundation to fund new tablets in the facility. Speaking of Meadowridge, that new library opened in August 2014, continuing our plan to provide world-class facilities. A new Central Library opened in 2013, and in December, the foundation will kick off its Capital Campaign for a New Pinney Library. The library continued and expanded its Read Up literacy program, partnering with Madison Metropolitan School District and United Way. The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program kicked off its second year, challenging early learners to become voracious readers before entering school. We’re better able to continue serving kids as they reach their teenage years with the addition of two teen librarians last year. And to serve adults, the library teamed up with the Literacy Network to offer free job skills training courses in two neighborhood libraries. But we haven’t stopped there: The library has a popular maker program in The Bubbler, which libraries throughout the world look to as inspiration for their own creative arts and crafts effort. In 2014, UW-Madison received a prestigious $456,627 National Leadership Grant to study the impact of The Bubbler’s programs on the community. We thank all who have contributed in some way — whether through volunteering, sharing talents through a Bubbler workshop, making a donation or simply enjoying our many programs and events — to making Madison Public Library not just a good library, but even better.

FOUNDATION GRANTS TOTAL ISSUED: $45,100 • iPads for literacy and learning, $6,200: iPads with educational apps for kids replaced outdated technology as part of the library’s initiative to make this engaging digital learning tool available to patrons at all branches. • “Take me to Central!,” $1,300: Up to 1,000 children from classrooms and after-school groups without adequate funding for transportation were able to visit Central Library and attend programs. • Teen interns, $7,500: Three teens with an interest in library careers gained valuable skills as part of a citywide effort to provide real-world learning experiences to high school students. • Etsy Craft Entrepreneurship pilot program, $2,300: Creative individuals in underserved communities will receive free small-business training and learn how to set up an Etsy shop online to help supplement their income and sell their product to new markets. • Media Lab mentorships, $3,000: This grant makes it possible for Central Library Media Lab volunteers to earn a stipend, which will help the library maintain a reliable, consistent volunteer base that ultimately allows more visitors to use the facility. • Library Director’s Fund, $5,000: These funds were designated for the library director to use at his discretion for special projects like last year’s All Staff Day for professional development and training. • Laptops for job training, $19,800: New laptops supported the library’s partnership with the Literacy Network to bring its Skills in Computers and Literacy for Employment (SCALE) program to Hawthorne and Goodman South Madison libraries. The six-week course teaches adult learners the technological skills necessary to find well-paying jobs.

Lunch for Libraries & Ex Libris The foundation continued its successful Lunch for Libraries and Ex Libris fundraisers in 2014, adding a new one — Rock & Read — to reach more families wishing to support the library. Lunch for Libraries featured best-selling mystery author Nevada Barr, who also appeared at a free Wisconsin Book Festival evening event for a large-group discussion of the latest novel in her series. Ex Libris Vol. IV: Better With Beer (left) at Central Library; Ex Libris Vol. IV: Better With first annual Rock & Read fundraiser at Capital Brewery in June Beer brought foodies and craft beer lovers to Central Library for an intimate evening of samples from the area’s top kitchens and breweries. And Bo Ryan helped out one of his favorite causes, literacy, when he agreed to be the special guest for the first annual Rock & Read fundraiser at Capital Brewery. The sunny afternoon was packed with live music, good eats and kids’ crafts. Proceeds benefited Beyond the Page, which provides humanities programming in Dane County libraries.

Madison Public Library, in partnership with Madison Public Library Foundation, held its second successful Wisconsin Book Festival in October. Both local and national authors headlined more than 60 events over festival weekend, and attendance was at an all-time high. The Book Festival also expanded to a year round schedule, offering a minimum of two author programs per month in addition to the fall weekend events. The foundation began a VIP program for festival donors to encourage private support beyond corporate sponsorships.
A NEW MEADOWRIDGE LIBRARY The library and foundation successfully continued their commitment to improving facilities with the opening of the new Meadowridge Library. The new location features a Quiet Reading Room with a fireplace; an abundance of natural light and open space; and a large common space with a new community kitchen that will host collaborative programming from the library and the Meadowood Neighborhood Center, located next door. The new space has the capacity to quadruple the library’s programs and events. Staff and neighborhood residents are excited about the emphasis the new library will have on food, including an after-school snack program for which the foundation has secured funding. The foundation raised more than $200,000 in private funds toward the new library, with

an additional $39,000 seeding an endowment that will sustain Meadowridge for years to come.

THE BUBBLER OVERFLOWS WITH SUCCESS The Bubbler, Madison Public Library’s unique arts and crafts-inspired maker program, continued to provide library users with free creative learning experiences throughout 2014. The program — which has been touted within the library industry as a national model — is part of a $456,627 National Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services last fall that will allow UW-Madison researchers and library leaders to measure the effectiveness of maker-focused programming and learning. The Bubbler includes activities, demonstrations and make-and-take workshops in all nine libraries, plus some at off-site events. Programs draw upon local experts’ skills, encouraging the sharing of information to help library patrons learn through making. The grant will allow the library to build innovative new partnerships using the maker -based learning model to engage underserved populations, including youth at the Dane County Juvenile Detention Center, Shelter Home and Neighborhood Intervention.

STORIES OF IMPACT
“Amelia became interested in the Summer Reading Club in between first and second grade after our Youth Services librarians visited her school and told her she could earn food just for reading! She loved the noodles and pizza prizes — that is what sold her on the program. Her mom, Cindy, said she was struggling with reading up to that point and wasn’t interested. Amelia also attended Readers Theater, and her mom said she became more confident because of that program. Today, she’s a seventh-grader who loves to read and volunteers in her school library when she wants to “get away from humanity.” When I saw Amelia and Cindy in the library last week, they told me about one book after the other — I couldn’t keep up with the titles, and they get so excited when sharing the books they love!” — Submitted by Lesley Kircher, Pinney Library Youth Services librarian
“I took my kids to ‘Read to a Dog.’ Since they love pets, they wanted to go again every month. My son goes to a bilingual school and now is only learning Spanish. One time he was reading to the dog and the owner said to him, ‘My dog doesn’t understand Spanish. Can you translate what you just read to him?’ My son did, and from then on, he started to learn how to read in English. His motivation is the dogs. By the second time we went, he was doing really well. My daughter also loves reading. She loves for me to read to her, but when it is time to read to the dog, she makes up the story. They both enjoy it a lot.” — Veronica Tinajero
“Joan came to Pinney Library for a Computer & Writing Assistance session with our awesome UW-Madison Writing Center tutor, Logan. Joan has rudimentary technology skills, and came to the library for assistance in learning to use the tablet that her son gave her for Christmas (as a thank-you gift for all of the help she gives in caring for her grandchildren). Logan, a UW graduate student, helped her get a copy of her credit report, and she was impressed by his knowledge and his sensitivity in how he respected her privacy. She was also excited to learn how to use email on the library laptop and really appreciates that the library offers assistance to people who did not grow up with technology. She credits the library with helping her to maintain her independence.”
— Account contributed by Sarah Lawton, Library Manager at Pinney Library
EMPOWERING YOUTH The library made it a priority to better engage teens, starting a teen internship program in cooperation with the City of Madison as well as hiring three new youth and teen librarians. Three high school students worked in the Central Library Media Lab, assisted with marketing and communications, and helped present programs in The Bubbler. The teen librarians got right to work creating new programs and events, fine-tuning young adult collections and providing opportunities to better connect with each neighborhood library — from volunteer opportunities to after-school gaming clubs to technology training.
