Dear Friends: The year 2012 was one of change for Madison Public Library. Barbara Dimick, library director since 1995, retired early in the year. Barb was instrumental in leading the library through many positive changes during her tenure, from expanded service hours at most libraries to the completion of seven Madison library building projects (including the addition of a new branch library, Alicia Ashman, in 2000). In September, Madison gained a new library director: Greg Mickells, formerly the assistant director at Lincoln City Libraries in Lincoln, Nebraska. Greg spent his first few months meeting staff and library users in the community through a series of “meet and greet” receptions, and familiarizing himself with Madison while simultaneously shepherding Central Library construction and the 2013 budget cycle. The library’s image transformed as well through a joint rebranding effort of the library and the Madison Public Library Foundation. As Greg was meeting Madisonians, the library was sharing its new logo and brand, followed by the release of a new vision and mission emphasizing learning, sharing and creating knowledge, and strategic goals highlighting the importance of community partnerships and collaboration. Central Library was emptied, gutted and is on its way to becoming a world-class flagship library for all to enjoy. The foundation also launched mynewlibrary.org in September to help the community learn about the new facility and the Learning for a Lifetime fundraising campaign. The library held 3,786 events in 2012, from all-new Family Fun Nights at Goodman South Madison to cyanotype printing workshops in conjunction with UW-Madison’s Go Big Read program to numerous events for teens. It’s often said “the more things change, the more they stay the same.” In a sense, this is true for our libraries as well. While the buildings, services, collections and programs are continuing to change to meet community expectations, the library’s purpose – connecting people with information and learning opportunities – remains a constant.

Dear Friends: Working toward the successful completion of the Madison Public Library Foundation’s goal to raise $9 million for Central Library by December 31, 2013, has been our first priority this year. In the past 16 months, we have raised $7.8 million. With approximately $1.2 million yet to raise, and the new library opening in September, most foundations might have this as their only priority. The foundation has eight strategic priorities, and fundraising for Central is just one of them. Our second strategic priority is to maintain the mission-critical business of the foundation while engaged in the capital campaign. Much of the foundation’s day-to-day activity centers on special events, grants to libraries, and helping librarians or Friends groups connect with patrons. Library staff, Friends groups and patrons depend on the foundation to be a catalyst, introducing new programs and meeting community needs. This is most apparent with our grants to libraries, which allow us to fund initiatives that transform library services in new and different ways. This past year, the foundation awarded grants to fund expansion of and improvements to the library’s e-book and audiobook collection, a a rebranding campaign for Madison Public Library, new teen reading materials, Mac laptop training so library staff can assist patrons with online services, the “Read to Your Baby” program and digitization of the Lost Madison historical photographs exhibit. The Donor Development and Special Events committees also work to change their program offerings each year, listening to donors and reaching out to new friends. Our annual events, Ex Libris and Lunch for Libraries, were more successful than ever. Proceeds from these events provide direct support to library programs. Our last – but not least – strategic priority gives us latitude to engage in initiatives, allied with library interests but not necessarily our regular activities. This year, we were happy to assist in the negotiations of bringing the Wisconsin Book Festival under the umbrella of Madison Public Library. The foundation board authorized the raising of $100,000, filling a necessary financial gap. Being nimble is important for all organizations. There is an abundance of real need and creative ideas for Madison Public Library. It is a dynamic institution, responding to change in real ways. We are happy to help and be part of how our libraries grow and thrive in Madison’s neighborhoods. Al Friedman President & Board Director Madison Public Library Foundation

FOUNDATION ISSUES $45,000 IN GRANTS FOR 2012 Generous donations to the foundation’s Annual Fund made it possible for the foundation to award $45,000 to Madison Public Library in 2012. The foundation accepts donations to this very important fund year-round and awards grants as requested by the library director, with input from all nine branches. Ten percent of the Annual Fund is reserved for the Endowment Fund, which ensures the success of Madison Public Library for years to come. Grants were issued for the following projects.
Mac Laptop Training As Apple computers grow in popularity, librarians must maintain a working knowledge of the Mac operating system. Staff are increasingly being asked to help patrons with Mac laptops understand how to use library resources like Overdrive for e-book downloads. To better serve these patrons, the foundation approved a $5,000 grant that covered the purchase of four new MacBook Air laptops. They will be used to train librarians at all branches in Mac basics.
Digitization of Lost Madison Exhibit A continuation of a project started more than a decade ago, the foundation awarded $3,000 to digitize historic photographs of buildings that no longer exist from the Lost Madison exhibit. Converting the images into a high-quality digital format will create an online archive. This will allow the exhibit to be recreated and aid in the development of a mobile walking tour using GPS technology.
Read to Your Baby Aimed at families in need, the “Read to your Baby” program stresses the importance of reading as part of parenting curriculum for all children, especially the very young. The Youth Services department partners with area agencies to distribute toddler books and library card applications to new moms. A $2,000 foundation grant helped the library purchase 500 of these books to reach young families through appropriate agencies and related programs.
E-book, Audiobook Collection Enhancement A grant of $22,000 is allowing the library to meet the clamor for e-books while continuing to meet the demand for print titles with the library’s regular collection budget. (See page 4 for details.)
Rebranding Support The foundation granted $8,000 to bring the library’s new visual identity to life in the nine branches and in the community. A public awareness campaign included a public event where the logo and brand were launched. (See page 8 for story.)
More Teen Reading Materials The number of young adults reading literature is growing fast, in part due to smash hits like The Hunger Games and Twilight. An unfortunate side effect of the popularity of these titles is their reduced availability to actual teens who, more than any other age group, rely on the library for their reading materials. They are also some of the least likely to wait. The $5,000 in approved funding from the foundation will add more than 500 teen-specific items, reducing hold time and expanding the variety of materials available to this eager demographic.

E-BOOKS EFFORTS EXPAND While print checkouts are still booming at Madison Public Library branches, the rise of e-book downloads and the customer demand for them is burgeoning. Digital checkouts have doubled year after year since the library joined the Wisconsin Public Library Consortium’s statewide OverDrive e-book delivery service, and they are expected to keep growing at the same brisk pace. The foundation has answered the call for an expanded e-book selection by granting the library $22,000 to build up and improve its digital collection. The funds have allowed the library to offer a wider variety of titles for patrons of all ages and interests. Library staff have guided hundreds of patrons through eReader training and e-book downloading thanks to a second foundation grant of $5,000 that covered the cost of MacBook Air laptops for staff to use. Help is given in individualized training sessions, over the phone and by email. Additionally, a grant from the Alliant Energy Foundation to buy various eReaders has made training possible for library visitors wishing to try out different platforms for e-books.
Two Proctor Scholarships Given to UW-Madison Students A donation from Margie Navarre-Saaf in memory of her mother, Helen Navarre, allowed the foundation to award two Elizabeth Moon Proctor Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each for the first time in history. Both winners, Carra Davies and Laura Wichert, were honored at a reception on September 15, where family and friends celebrated the life of “Betsy” Proctor. Family and friends established the scholarship fund in 2007 to carry on Proctor’s advocating of the library and information studies field to young people. Proctor was a librarian at Madison Public Library from 1967 to 1996, and died in 2000. Navarre-Saaf, borrower services manager at the Lakeview Branch, first met Proctor as a young volunteer there. She calls Proctor one of her most influential mentors.
4
The scholarships are awarded to Madison Public Library employees who are pursuing master’s degrees in library studies and exhibit a passion for community engagement and outreach. Davies and Wichert are attending UWMadison. Mary Clark, Proctor’s sister, said the two recipients share Proctor’s welcoming attitude, understand the importance of customer service and are determined to fight poverty using library resources as tools.
PIONEERING PARTNERSHIPS Although the library has been partnering with organizations and businesses in the Madison area for many years, its new mission, vision and strategic goals put a stronger emphasis on creating and sustaining these connections. It is becoming increasingly important for the library to work with educators, city government, local nonprofits and other groups to extend its reach, share resources and point learners toward the variety of services and experts in the community.
Composting Guidance The City of Madison Streets Division presented a series of free Home Composting Classes at seven library branches in the spring. Taught by Madison Recycling Coordinator George Dreckmann, the classes taught residents about what kinds of materials can be composted, where to place their compost bin and how to tend to your compost. Plans for building a compost bin were provided.
The following are just several of the partnerships that the Madison Public Library forged in 2012:
Idea Exchange The library helped the City of Madison gain input on the city budget for 2012 by promoting IdeaScale, an online community where residents can submit ideas, comment on others’ suggestions, and vote for their favorite ways to save and spend city funds. The library also publicized neighborhood forums for residents to bring forth and exchange budget ideas.
Earth Month Activities Pinney Library worked with the Great Dane Pub & Brewing Company to promote Earth Month activities throughout April. These included a book drive, a communitywide Easter egg hunt following by story time and kids’ activities, and an Earth Day event in which those who visited the Pinney were encouraged to bike there. Those who participated in Earth Month activities were rewarded with items such as Great Dane coupons and Madison Public Library tote bags. Additionally, the Great Dane sponsored Sunday hours at Pinney from March to May.
South Madison Family Fun Nights a Hit For the second year in a row, Madison families are being treated to Family Fun Nights at the Goodman South Madison branch. Held on Friday evenings in the fall and continuing into 2013, the events include performers, animals, crafts, movies and snacks. The foundation thanks St. Mary’s and The Capital Times Kids Fund for their financial support of the Family Fun Nights series.
Each gathering is an opportunity for people living in on or near the south side to take in cultural experiences, meet new people, build community connections and discover the many services Madison’s libraries have to offer. Family Fun Nights draw parents, grandparents and many children, most in the ages 2-10 range. All who attend are encouraged to come early to browse the collection and check out items, and to sign up for library cards if they do not already have them. They also are made aware of computer classes, English language classes, job/education assistance and theFoodShare program. Many of the participants speak Spanish as their first language, so Spanish-speaking staff are present at the events. Nearly 400 people attended Family Fun Nights from September through the end of 2012, and as word spreads about the events, the audience is expected to grow.

NOVEL IDEAS: GOING BEYOND BOOKS In 2012, Madison Public Library’s board of directors approved a new vision statement: your place to learn, share and create. New, nontraditional programs in the arts and sciences are providing an outlet for that vision, from cyanotype printing to computer-aided animation. In conjunction with UW-Madison’s Go Big Read selection, Radioactive, the library offered adults three hands-on sessions to sample the artistic process used by author Lauren Redniss. Participants learned about the process of cyanotype printing and created their own cyanotype prints in the two-hour programs that were run by internationally exhibiting artist Aliza Rand, director and art teacher at Violet Art Studios. The programs were held at the Hawthorne branch, the Sequoya branch and Madison Museum of Contemporary Art. Go Big Read engages students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members in a shared, academically focused reading experience. The library collaborates with UWMadison to provide greater community access to Go Big Read books and discussions. Another program focuses on providing after-school activities for teenagers. Scheduled to run from January 2013 until the end of the school year, the Animation Creation Station is a series of weekly after-school animation workshops for
teenagers at the Goodman South Madison Library. Thanks to a generous grant from the Irwin A. and Robert D. Goodman Foundation, Teen Services Librarian Jesse Vieau and Supervising Librarian Michael Spelman are busy building up the library’s graphic novel and animation collection, hiring a professional animation instructor and purchasing iPads for animation workstations. The workshops will allow teens to dabble with animation tools and computer software while learning how to script, capture and edit animated narrative sequences. In addition to the weekly workshops, the animator will make his expertise and the animation equipment available for weekly dropin sessions and at library outreach visits to various south Madison neighorhood locations. The Animation Creation Station is expected to reach more than 1,000 youth in 2013. If it proves popular, the library will seek to expand the program to feature advanced animation workshops, video game creation workshops and programs for other age groups. The cyanotype and animation programs are examples of the types of programs the community will find in The Bubbler, the library’s new maker-focused programming model for all ages that will debut in 2013.

NEW LIBRARY DIRECTOR: GREGORY MICKELLS
Gregory Mickells says he wasn’t officially conducting a job search when he came across the listing for Madison Public Library director; he was happy in his assistant director position at Lincoln City Libraries in Lincoln, Nebraska. But the idea of working in Madison piqued his interest because of its similarities to Lincoln: Both are state capitals, house major universities and have resident bases that are passionate about their respective public library system. He also describes himself as someone who embraces and encourages change and adaptation, both in life and in the workplace. It was these qualities that made Mickells – pronounced “Michaels” – the ideal choice to lead Madison Public Library in the midst of a rebranding campaign and the new Central Library’s highly anticipated 2013 debut. Mickells began his new position on September 4 and is the 16th library director in MPL’s 137-year tenure. Mickells feels it is important to not only bring people into Madison’s libraries, but libraries into the community through innovative programs and relationship-building with various organizations and groups. He says he enjoys strategic planning and the management of building projects. Mickells replaces Barbara Dimick, who retired in February after serving the library for 35 years – the last 15 as director. Dimick oversaw the opening and expansion of several branches during her tenure, and she will be missed by both the library and foundation staff.

A BRAND-NEW BRAND: FOCUS ON VARIETY OF SERVICES
As libraries redefine themselves to meet the changing needs of the communities they serve, their core purpose and the message they send to the public can sometimes get lost. In August, Madison Public Library kicked off a rebranding campaign that cut to the heart of what it stands for: encouraging all to discover the breadth of services and materials it offers. With a new library director coming aboard in September plus a new Central Library under construction, the timing was right to demonstrate the many ways Madison’s libraries can enrich the lives of community members. The foundation put forth the funds to make the rebranding campaign a hit. At the center of the campaign was a lively new logo, unveiled in front of nearly 700 loyal library customers at a summer reading celebration. The brightly colored logo symbolizes a stack of diverse and engaging materials, but it also resembles a path that invites library users to seek adventure and knowledge. Various versions of the logo were created for Friends groups at the branches, as well as for the foundation, all unified in appearance. The rebranding campaign also included a media relations push, enhanced communication through social media channels, and nine weeklong branch celebrations where patrons could meet new Library Director Gregory Mickells while finding hidden surprises like gift certificates and small prizes in the stacks. The celebration weeks highlighted the role Madison’s libraries play in promoting literacy, civic engagement and vibrant neighborhoods. The foundation would like to thank Cricket Design Works for developing the new logo and brand; Amy Mertz and Katie Kennedy Shepherd for their media and planning expertise; the branches’ Friends groups, which underwrote and hosted the receptions; branch managers and staff for promoting the celebration weeks; and the many local businesses that donated “seek and find” prizes.

CENTRAL GOES BOOKLESS In November 2011, Central Library closed its doors to prepare for the facility’s $30 million overhaul. Moving countless reading materials, computers and other items is no small task – especially when downsizing from a 90,000-square-foot facility to a 10,000-square-foot temporary location on South Hamilton Street – and took nearly three months. But those connected to Madison’s flagship public library were rewarded for the short-term chaos in a big way with Bookless, a giant community-wide party held January 28 in the barren library to focus energy on what the space will hold when it reopens in September 2013.
The art was so impressive at Bookless that the Madison Arts Commission awarded a $6,000 grant for two Bookless artists, Niki Johnson and Heath Matysek-Snyder, to create permanent pieces for the new Central Library. Additional funds must be raised to cover the total cost, but the grant gets the artists started on the works that will be unveiled at the library’s grand opening in early September. Those who missed Bookless can still experience it by going on the library’s website, its Flickr page or searching through social media channels for photos, videos and posts from late January 2012 with the hashtag #Bookless.
The brainchild of Madison Public Library’s Trent Miller and Courtney Davis of the Library Foundation, Bookless was conceived when the two began imagining the potential of holding an event in the emptied building to celebrate the Central Library construction kickoff. Planning began quickly, and many businesses and artists signed on to support the event. The event, which raised more than $29,000 toward Learning for a Lifetime: The Community Campaign for a New Central Library, included work by 100 artists, art activities, live music, a DJ, dancing, food, drinks and the ability to be as loud as desired in a place that traditionally hears only whispers. Art covered the walls, ceilings and floors, and much of it was repurposed from old library materials. Families were invited to the event during the day, and as the evening approached, the doors opened to adults who danced and celebrated in the empty stacks until the next day’s early morning hours. Many library and foundation staffers heard excitement at Bookless about what the new library would be like, from mentions of more technology to new collaboration and reading space.

CENTRAL CONSTRUCTION BEGINS
Representatives from the library, the foundation, the City of Madison and project contractor J.H. Findorff kicked off Central Library construction on March 27. The construction team removed the building’s cornerstone to unearth a time capsule from 1965, the year the library was built. A complete photo album capturing various stages of library construction can be viewed on Madison Public Library’s Flickr page. With less than a year until the grand reopening of the new Central Library, the Madison Public Library Foundation launched the community phase of the Learning for a Lifetime capital campaign with a celebratory luncheon on September 20. The festivities included exciting project updates, hard hat tours, and the unveiling of a new campaign website, mynewlibrary.org. The website is devoted exclusively to the new downtown library and guides the community through the whole project, from why it’s being built to photo galleries, a video, fundraising progress, Central Library in the news and an easy-to-use donation feature. Thanks to many individuals, businesses and foundations that stepped up early in the campaign, the foundation was 75 percent of the way to its $9 million fundraising goal as of the kickoff.
10
FRESH FUNDRAISERS: L U N C H F O R L I B R A R I E S, E X L I B R I S The foundation’s youngest fundraiser was a major success thanks to a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Wisconsin native headlining the event amid a Blackhawk Country Club backdrop. The inaugural Lunch for Libraries in July drew more than 200 foundation supporters to hear David Maraniss, an associate editor at The Washington Post, share stories about his research process for the acclaimed biography Barack Obama: The Story. At the fundraiser, subtitled Dish with David, Maraniss also signed copies of his book that had been released just a few weeks prior. More than $20,000 was raised for the foundation’s Annual Fund, which supports grants for collections and programs in the nine branches. Those who enjoy craft beers and local chocolatiers’ creations got a second round in October at Ex Libris Volume II: A Review of Beer & Chocolate. More than 250 guests sampled the pairings made by six brewers, three chocolatiers and a cupcake entrepreneur. A large silent auction packed with many distinctive and priceless items, along with generous corporate sponsorships and ticket sales, raised $27,838 for collections and programming at the nine library branches.
11
BOOK CLUB CHALLENGE
In addition to attending fundraisers or simply making a one-time donation to the Learning for a Lifetime campaign, some have chosen to take on the Book Club Challenge. This foundation fundraising program asks local private book clubs to donate $250 or more to the campaign. In exchange, the participating club’s name will be added to a “book” on a custom-made natural wood bench created by award-winning artist Hongtao Zhou in collaboration with Drift Studio in Mount Horeb. The bench will be a permanent addition to the new Central Library. A total of 113 book clubs took part and raised $35,582 for the new Central Library as part of the Book Club Challenge, easily exceeding the goals of raising $25,000 and seeking 100 clubs to participate. The names of the book clubs that helped the foundation’s cause were quite creative and diverse, from the “Hoity Toity Book Club” to “SLOBS with Library Cards.”
