FOUNDATION NEWS Barb Dimick Retires after over 30 years with Madison Public Library

Barb Dimick Photo: Kim Keyes

Over the past 30 years, Barb Dimick has changed the face of the Madison Public Library. Since taking her first position as a library page, her high energy, sound judgment, personal integrity, and unwavering dedication to improving the library have earned her the respect of her co-workers, city officials, and the entire Madison community.

As library director, Barb expanded community partnerships, increased technology access, and created a safe, democratic environment for people of all races, ages, and economic situations. When Barb began her directorship, the library owned only one computer. Today, its network has expanded to over 120 public machines that provide entertainment to teens, job searching tools to adults, and technological assistance to seniors. Under Barb’s leadership, initiatives with community-wide import were born. Summer reading participation increased more than 120% through outreach to schools and preschools. An avid

proponent of early literacy, Barb established early childhood story activities and various programs that bring the library directly in to Madison neighborhoods. As Barb puts it, “Getting the community access to library resources is the first and most important step.” She also physically expanded, improved, and relocated existing library locations and added an entirely new branch, Alicia Ashman. “The branches are immensely important community gathering places,” Barb says. “They create a sense of ownership and pride in the local communities as well as provide access to those who live nearby.” When Barb retires in February, she will be greatly missed by all. “When I was a student, I could not have been more proud to be an employee of Madison Public Library and claim Barb as my boss,” says Barb’s former student and current library employee Molly Warren, “and I’m just as proud today.” Barb Dimick Photo: Kim Keyes

“Bookless” Raises over $29,000 for New Central Library

Kids and adults turned library walls and windows into a work of art. Photo: Kelsey Fenton

The books may be gone, but the Central Library was full on Saturday, January 28th. 100 Madison artists ranging from painters to sculptors to audiovisual artists covered the empty walls, floors, and even ceilings with their artwork.

More than 2,500 attended the Family Free-for-All during the day and just as many partied in the library until the wee hours of Sunday morning to the tune of live music and DJs. Missed the event? Check out #Bookless on Twitter and photos on our website.

Bookless party-goers take in a video piece by Marina Kelly and Megan Katz.

FOUNDATION NEWS Inquiring Minds Your Questions Answered

We Want to Know... Your responses from the Bookless “Library Wall of Love” Q: What is your first memory of the Central Library?

Q: How can I help support the library?

Al Friedman, President, MPLF

A: Among all of the charitable organizations in today’s landscape, there is a reason many of us are drawn to support libraries. It’s more than the cozy feeling of holding a book or a fond memory of a local librarian. It’s not only the magic of being transported to another place through reading. It is something much bigger. Giving to your library fits into what many people consider the highest form of giving. This is the gift that allows individuals to become self-reliant. It’s the fulfillment of the wisdom in teaching a person how to fish rather than giving them a fish. No matter how, or how much you give, all library gifts go toward our greater community effort to enhance, enable, and in many cases, improve individuals. Every day, library staff and resources are employed to stimulate a child’s imagination and also to answer the needs of students, adults, and businesses.

Q: What are your hopes for the new Central Library?

We appreciate what you give, whether it is in-kind, direct financial support, or volunteering your personal time. Because it’s our business to find a way for you to support your public libraries, here are some choices: • Be a volunteer at Madison Public Library Foundation or contact your branch friends group • Support programs and collections through a donation to the Annual Fund • Be a sustaining donor through your gift to our general endowment or your branch endowment fund • Support Learning for a Lifetime: The Community Campaign for a New Central Library • Become a member of the Silas Pinney Society by making a legacy gift through your estate plan It is a pleasure to be involved with the leadership of Madison Public Library Foundation because of your continuing support and trust in what we are doing together.

Book Club Corner: Meet The Blue Stocking Society

Pinney Branch and Great Dane Pair up in Spring Sponsorship

This month’s book club began in 1990 as a group of women with varied interests and backgrounds, ranging in age from the fifties to the eighties. Their name, The Blue Stocking Society, was inspired by an informal organization of women founded in England in the 1750s, when women had minimal educational and intellectual status. As 21st century women, this group carries on the tradition of discussing literature while enjoying cups of tea (or coffee) and dessert. Great Dane Pub & Brewing Company is sponsoring Sunday hours at the Pinney Branch Library from March – May 2012. As part of the sponsorship, Pinney Branch, which is known for its sustainability collection, will mount on a month-long celebration of Earth Day in April.

What book are you currently reading? The Great Gatsby, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, and The Paris Wife What author would you like to have as a book club guest? Jodi Picoult If you could host book club anywhere, where would it be? Harrods Tea Room in London

Some of the special activities in April will include: Book Drive: Recycle your books! Donate your gently used books (or other media) by dropping items off at either the Great Dane Pub Eastside or at the Pinney Branch. For every 10 items donated, receive a coupon for “$5 off when you spend $20” at the Great Dane Pub Eastside.

If you could invite any person to join your book club, who would it be? Margaret Thatcher

Egg Hunt: April 7, 10 AM at the park near the Great Dane at 876 Jupiter Drive. Join the community-wide egg hunt, with goodies for all the kids, and hot cocoa or juice at the Great Dane after the egg hunt. Library staff will be on hand for an Easter-time story session. Earth Day: April 22 from 10 AM - 5 PM. Do something earthfriendly and RIDE YOUR BIKE today! If you bike to Pinney Branch, you’ll receive a coupon for the Great Dane. If you bike to the Great Dane Eastside, you’ll receive a reusable book tote from Madison Public Library. The Great Dane opens at 10 AM and the library opens at 1 PM. One coupon or tote per family, while supplies last.

The Blue Stocking Society: Joy Anderson, Barb Clapp, Anna McManus, Barb Olson, Mary Ellen Schlough and Susan Titus.

Find out more on the library’s website.

Congratulations to The Blue Stocking Society! They’ve won a gift card to Barriques. If you’d like to be entered in the drawing for next quarter’s newsletter, send an email to newsletter@mplfoundation.org including a brief description of your book club and your answers to the four questions above.

LIBRARY NEWS Meet your Friends Group: Hawthorne Branch The Hawthorne Branch Friends Group has been around for decades, but recently, its revived and revamped its efforts. They’ve reached out to local neighborhood associations and appointed a new board of seven members. “A small group of Friends has done so much for the branch for years, especially in support of programming for children and their families,” said Marc Gartler, the branch supervisor at Hawthorne. “It’s really exciting to now see a larger and very energetic group with a lot of great ideas for the future.” Gartler says the board is meeting regularly to brainstorm fundraising and promotional ideas. In addition to their annual April book sale, the Hawthorne Branch Friends group has committed to a substantial contribution to the branch’s iPad technology program. The branch will be getting several iPads and docking stations with Friends group pledging to fund apps and additional hardware as needs arise. To lend your support to the Hawthorne Friends Group or its iPad program, contact Marc Gartler, branch supervisor.

Save the Date for the 2012 Book Club Café! The annual event is set for Thursday, May 10 at 7 PM at Olbrich Garderns. Madison author Susanna Daniel will feature her novel Stiltsville based on her childhood in an unusual community in Florida. Winner of the 2011 PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize, Daniel was awarded as an exceptionally talented fiction writer whose debut work represents distinguished literary achievement and suggests great promise. Watch the library’s website for updates including tickets on sale in early spring.

Central Library Reaches Out to Children, Teens and Families While the old Central Library may be empty, the youth services and teen librarians now stationed at the interim location are busy as ever bringing educational and literacy-rich activities to children, teens and families all over the city. Youth Services Librarian Krissy Wick is constantly on the go, bringing storytimes and mobile libraries to Teen Librarian, Jesse Vieau in the Children’s Area at the children with limited library access empty Central Library. or modeling reading strategies and Photo: Kim Keyes providing rotating library collections to area daycares and preschools. Wick works with groups such as Allied Drive Learning Center, the Bayview Community Center, Creative Learning Preschool & Child Care Center, Madison College Child and Family Center, Meriter Children’s Center, Midvale Safe Haven, and Red Caboose Childcare, with additional partnerships in the works. Sequoya Library customers might see Wick occasionally in between community visits. Wick and other library staff also partner with the Overture Center for the Arts to create mobile libraries and multiple activity stations during various child-centric performances. A recent Prince and Princess Party in conjunction with Kids in the Rotunda drew a remarkable audience of 1,400. Wick says, “These events bring in families from all over Madison, some of whom may not be library users, so our hope is to introduce families to everything the library does.” Meanwhile, Teen Librarian Jesse Vieau partners with a wide range of community organizations and schools to reach teens both in the library and outside its walls. Vieau assists in technology training for incarcerated youth through a partnership with the Madison Metropolitan School District and trains teens in technology through library classes and the MediaWorks program at Goodman Community Center. Jesse helps teens explore careers at the annual West High Job Fair and through internships with the UW-Madison’s Information Technology Academy for high school students and connects teens with Story Time at Goodman South Madison. volunteer opportunities through his work at the Library through the Teen Summer Volunteer Program (teen book sellers raised money for the new Central Library), Boys and Girls Club of Dane County, Goodman Community Center. Vieau’s work has clearly paid off – attendance at teen programs in 2011 increased 322% over 2010. Teens love the library’s gaming programs and summer gaming tournaments. Recently Madison teen gamers faced off in a friendly play-off with teens in Charlotte, NC, where Vieau was formerly employed. The next challenge: teens from the Fitchburg Library in April.

LIBRARY NEWS Let Madison Public Library Help You With Your Taxes Did you know that since January 26, volunteers have been available to help individuals prepare and file basic Federal and Wisconsin income taxes?

Based on usage, price, coverage, quality of service, and customer feedback, Madison Public Library has made the following changes to its database offerings:

Last year over 1,600 individuals and households filed their taxes through tax assistance at Madison libraries. Made possible through a partnership involving Wisconsin Department of Revenue, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), AARP and Edgewood College, this popular and important library service targets people with low-to-moderate income, individuals with disabilities, non-English speaking taxpayers and seniors.

AtoZ Databases Access replaced ReferenceUSA as our business directory. It provides the same information at half the price, with the addition of residential data for the entire United States.

Assistance is available at Hawthorne Library, Lakeview Branch Library, Pinney Branch Library and Sequoya Library. All appointments must be scheduled in advance. For details about application criteria or to make an appointment, phone the participating library or visit http://www. madisonpubliclibrary.org/special-series/tax-assistance.

A Library Book? On my Kindle? For the last two years, Madison libraries have experienced a surge of eBook use. According to one study, purchases of eBooks increased more than 200% in 2010. No doubt, the 2011 Christmas season brought a flood of the shiny new electronic reading devices. What many people don’t realize is that the library is well-equipped to support this trend.

Database Changes for 2012

Madison Public Library is part of a collaborative effort offering statewide access to eBooks through the Wisconsin Public Library Consortium, which has raised $1 million toward purchasing new eBooks. The Madison Public Library Foundation gave $29,000 toward this effort, allowing the library to offer more titles and more copies of already popular titles in 2012. A second grant from the Alliant Energy Foundation to purchase various eReaders made training possible for those wishing to test out different models of eBooks. In the weeks after the holidays, librarians offered assistance for people wanting a little extra help learning to use their new – or not so new – eReaders with the library’s growing eBook collection. At the Alicia Ashman, Hawthorne, and Central Libraries, 119 people received help in hour-long individualized training sessions and many more received assistance, over the phone or via email.

In early January, Value Line Investment services updated its website with a fresh look while keeping the same information investors rely on. Late in 2011, Morningstar Investment Research Center added training videos, new features and different navigation making this often requested resource even more valuable. All Madison Public Library databases require a valid library card for use, and some have mobile apps or mobile interfaces.
