MADISON PUBLIC LIBRARY a quarterly newsletter from the Madison Public Library Foundation
FOUNDATION NEWS What’s a “Bubbler?” Your Way to Learn, Share, and Create No doubt most Wisconsinites have been asked that question a time or two. Now, Madison Public Library has redefined the term again as the name for its “makers” program. The Bubbler, debuting along with the new Central Library in September, will feature creators from all realms to share their knowledge – from artistic techniques to culinary expertise to self- publishing advice. “The idea is to help Madison’s creative energy bubble up to the surface, where people can access it,” said Library Director Greg Mickells. “It’s creating a platform to share knowledge – a very important function of any successful library.” The Bubbler was inspired by pop-up workshops at Bookless like screen and letterpress printing
Unlike most maker setups, the Bubbler isn’t a physical space. It’s a series of presenters that come and go in Central Library’s new programming spaces and extend out to the branches. “We won’t be tied to a single venue or specific technology,” said Bubbler Coordinator Trent Miller, “so the possibilities are endless. One week might feature audio recording, then beer brewing the next.”
What Do You Want to Learn? How to grow the perfect tomato? How to butcher a hog? How to publish an ebook? Interested in collaborating with the library to showcase your talents? Tell us at madisonbubbler@gmail.com.
Foundation Grants $15K for Existing Collections and Technology In December, the foundation approved new grant requests totalling $15,000 for digital and collection-based projects.
Computers for Mac Training To better assist patrons who use Apple computers, the foundation approved a $5,000 grant for four MacBook Air laptops to train librarians at all branches in Mac basics.
“These grants will help the library preserve its past while also embracing the future,” said Mickells. “It’s equally important that we cultivate our more traditional collections as we stay in tune with technological advancements.”
“Read to your Baby” Program The Youth Services department partners with area agencies to distribute toddler books and library card applications to new moms. $2,000 from the foundation will purchase 500 books for young families to encourage reading to young children.
Digitization of “Lost Madison” Exhibit Continuing a project started over a decade ago, the foundation awarded $3,000 for the digitization of historic photographs from the “Lost Madison” to create an online archive.
More materials for teens Young adult titles are in high demand these days, in part due to hits like The Hunger Games and Twilight. $5,000 from the foundation will add over 500 teen-specific items, reducing hold time and expanding the variety of materials available to this eager demographic.
According to a PEW Research study, “libraries are a large part of how readers ages 16-17 get their books, more so than older adults.”
Learn more about the $45,000 awarded by the foundation in 2012 at www.mplfoundation.org. These grants are made possible through generous donations to the Annual Fund. In addition to projects like these, 10% of the Annual Fund is reserved each year for the General Endowment to ensure the success of Madison Public Library for years to come.
FOUNDATION NEWS Inquiring Minds Your Questions Answered
We Want to Know... We asked our new board members: Which branch library is your favorite and why? My favorite branch library is South Madison. People on the south side still call it by its original name because this library is such an important part of the identity of the South Madison neighborhood. People from all ages use it, especially children who come in after school. Our branch welcomes and assists everyone. I have enjoyed sharing my poetry there because of all these fabulous reasons.
Q: What can I do to help?
Al Friedman, President, MPLF
A: Because people know I am involved with the Madison Public Library Foundation, they often ask me this question. The truth is there are many different ways to help the foundation and Madison Public Libraries – and not just by donating funds. Reflecting on the past couple years of activity surrounding the branch libraries and the rebuilding of Central Library, the continuum of effort by so many people is astounding.

My favorite library branch is Pinney. As kids, my brothers and I would beg my mom to take us to library events. I remember sitting in the library for hours reading every book that I could get my hands on.
Of course we have to thank the librarians, administrators, and foundation staff for their day-to-day guidance and leadership. But their work is complimented by so many others – many of you reading this newsletter right now! At the foundation level, we have a volunteer board of twenty-one busy citizens who govern the foundation and serve on committees. We have non-board members also serving on our committees, some of which are almost entirely composed of non-board volunteers. Our special events, such as Ex Libris, Lunch for Libraries, and the upcoming Foreword grand opening gala for Central are planned and staffed by extraordinary groups of talented volunteers. Capital campaigns always present unique ways to give, and we have a volunteer Campaign Cabinet steering the campaign for Central Library. Individual volunteers have been spirited to come up with their own ways to help, such as the Book Club Challenge. One volunteer even organized a local author event expressly for the benefit of Central.

Goodman South Madison because of the community feeling it invokes. Almost every time I go, I run into a neighbor or friend. My one-year-old son goes right away to the area with his favorite toys, and my five-year-old daughter loves reading books with my husband or I while snuggling together in the cozy reading nook. Going to this library branch is a treasured near weekly outing for our entire family. - Nancy Pandhi The Sequoya Branch was my favorite growing up as a child in Orchard Ridge (preMeadowridge Branch). Having returned to Madison after a seven-year absence, the Goodman South branch has become my new favorite. It is closest to where I work and provides me with an intrinsic sense of pride in the library’s ongoing commitment to all the citizens of Madison.
So, when you get a piece of mail from us (sent with the help of volunteers) or a phone call (from a volunteer), remember that it’s these generous and dedicated people who make possible everything we do. Call us to join in, and thanks to all who share their wealth, time, and in many cases both!

Book Club Corner: Meet Books ‘n’ Banter
Give your Will a Check-up
Books ‘n’ Banter began in 1995 on Madison’s east side, after breaking away from a book club that became too large. The smaller book club happily chatted about books without a group name until they registered for the Madison Public Library’s first Book Club Café in 1997. After batting around names, the alliteration of Books ‘n’ Banter stuck. The members, who each choose a month to select a book and host, live on the north and east side of Madison.
Join experts Steve Brezinski from Axley Brynelson and Ann Casey from Madison Community Foundation for a presentation and Q&A.

LIBRARY NEWS From the Director’s Desk New Projects for the New Year As we begin the new year, we’re also beginning some exciting new projects at the library. One initiative - The Bubbler - has received local and national attention this winter. Our growing list of partners will keep the Bubbler experience current and dynamic, offering a wide range of lectures, demonstrations, and make-and-take workshops. Watch the February Mayor’s Report online at Madison City Channel to learn more about this unique venture. Gregory Mickells, Director of Madison Public Library
The library, in partnership with the Madison Public Library Foundation, has also assumed responsibility for hosting a book festival in 2013. We are honored to have the opportunity to present a book festival as part of our strong tradition of offering educational, cultural and literary experiences in the Madison community and are looking forward to continuing the fine tradition begun by the Wisconsin Humanities “We are honored to have Council in 2002. the opportunity to present a
book festival as part of our
In an announcement to Wisconsin Book Festival strong tradition of offering supporters on the festival’s web site, Wisconsin educational, cultural and Humanities Council Executive Director Dena Wortzel said, “Madison Public Library has long been a key literary experiences in the festival partner whose values the WHC shares: Madison community.” love of literature, free exchange of ideas, free and universal public access, and dynamic engagement with the community. The library, with its exciting new downtown facility and branch locations all across Madison, is the ideal home for the festival.” We couldn’t agree more, and are looking forward to hosting our first book festival in the fall of 2013. You can follow our progress through our email newsletter or through the Wisconsin Book Festival web site, Facebook and Twitter presences.
Madison Public Library Partners with Foundation to Host Book Fest The Madison Public Library Foundation will raise $100,000 to partner with the Madison Public Library in hosting the 2013 Wisconsin Book Festival. The previous host, The Wisconsin Humanities Council, has already pledged $20,000 in support over the next two years. The remainder of the $100,000 will come from individuals, businesses and foundations. “Every year, more and more people show their support for the Wisconsin Book Festival by attending,” said Foundation Executive Director Jenni Collins, “We are confident that these long-time enthusiasts and the rest of the community will step up to help us continue this important literary institution for Madison.” Main attractions will take place in the new downtown library, making this a signature event for Central with pre-festival events in branches and other venues around the city.
Congratulations to Library Director Greg Mickells! Named One of Five “People to Watch in 2013” by Dean Mosiman of the Wisconsin State Journal
Meet Your Friends Group: Meadowridge The 80 members of the Meadowridge Friends have a busy year ahead of them. They’ll be working with area neighborhood groups to raise $30,000 for their branch’s expansion – and of course, baking! Don’t forget your sweet tooth around this group. They hold biannual book/ bake sales in February and October and a Thanksgiving Pie Sale.
“We’re pretty cramped,” said Lemanski. “The library is a place where our community comes together and the expansion will allow our patrons to have a larger more welcoming place to visit. We’re all voracious readers and want a better place for our library and community.”
“It’s quite a hit with the library patrons,” said Lynn Lemanski, president of the Meadowrige Friends, ”What better way to bring people to our library than a good book and some good food?” After their last pie sale in November, they raised $122 from book sales and $760 in pies. The Friends use the money they raise where it’s needed most in their branch – from magazine subscriptions to books for babies to new chairs and stools. This year, the branch’s biggest need is more space. 10
