CELEBRATING BEETHOVEN 250 Beethoven turns 250 this year! Let us reflect upon the man, the myth and the music as musicians across the globe unite by performing his beloved works. Join the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) in a celebration of the legendary composer who inspired generations to follow in his trailblazing footsteps. With his trademark wild hairstyle and stormy gaze, Beethoven’s portrait is still as recognizable today as some modern-day celebrities. He was indeed über-famous; his funeral drawing more than 20,000 mourners. Beethoven’s music is timeless and our fascination with his persona continues to this day. Beethoven’s revolutionary spirit opened the door to a new musical freedom as he stretched all existing boundaries. A maverick and an innovator, a lover of nature and a profound believer in humanity - Beethoven’s many facets left us an unbelievably rich collection of works. Younger listeners can begin their journey with a glimpse of his life in Family Fun Day Concert Beethoven Lives Upstairs. Music lovers of all ages will revel in the virtuosity of his piano concertos, rare Triple Concerto and sublime Romances for violin and orchestra, with dramatic overtures creating powerful suspense. The MPO proudly presents the complete cycle of nine symphonies - Beethoven’s undying legacy and a cornerstone of Western civilization. Explore his temperaments: the lighter early symphonies with their nod to Mozart and Haydn, the middle heroic period, and the glorious 9th and its Ode to Joy! The symphonies contain an entire life within them - so complete that every composer since Beethoven inevitably measures their work against this lofty benchmark. According to Beethoven, “Music is the spark that lights the fire in the human spirit”. A tool for self-expression, communicating hope, joy, sadness and togetherness. His music inspires reflection and dialogue - with others and with ourselves. The MPO joins musicians everywhere in these yearlong festivities: fulfilling Beethoven’s wish to make the world a better place, one note at a time.

MESSAGE FROM THE PATRON
It is my pleasure to congratulate Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) on the launch of their 2020 Concert Season. Looking back, I am very proud to witness first-hand how the MPO has grown and flourished into an orchestra of high caliber since its inaugural performance in August 1998. Today, the MPO has built a credible reputation as one of the most highly regarded orchestras in Asia, performing over 100 concerts each year. Since its inauguration over two decades ago, the MPO has continued its quest to inspire and impress music-lovers with its excellent virtuosity, wide repertoire and collaborations with renowned artists from a variety of background and genres. This has been achieved through performances in and out of DFP, not just within Malaysia but internationally, reaching audiences in South East Asia and beyond. The musical reach of the MPO has not just been restricted to the main orchestra, but includes the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO) and MPO’s Education and Outreach Programme (ENCOUNTER). The MPYO has since its inception over a decade ago, proven its capabilities to impress and entertain young and old audiences alike from a multitude of backgrounds in a series of concerts in DFP and corporate events. Whilst ENCOUNTER has been committed in its mission to give back to the society through collaborations with social organisations, community centers and hospitals, all in the name of spreading love and appreciation for classical music to different groups of communities. It is with great honour that I welcome you to MPO’s 22nd season of exciting concerts and performances at DFP. Let the music begin!
YABhg Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Bt Haji Mohd Ali

This season will present a spectrum of a wide-ranging programme to make the DFP and MPO brands accessible and closer to the hearts of Malaysians. The MPO will celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birthday anniversary by presenting the composer’s much-loved masterpieces throughout the season. The highlight of this season is the MPO’s fourth Ballet Festival, presenting famed ballet works The Nutcracker and Cinderella. On another note, Cirque de la Symphonie returns to stun the DFP audience this season, this time complete with ‘live’ violin aerialist! This season will witness local legendary singers Aishah and Dato’ M. Nasir collaborating with the MPO. The MPO will also pay tribute to renowned composer S. Atan in a speciallyprogrammed Hari Raya-themed concert. I take this opportunity to welcome back Kees Bakels as the MPO Conductor Laureate. He was the founding Music Director of the MPO in 1998 and was the central artistic force behind the establishment of this orchestra. I am optimist that Maestro Bakels will bring the orchestra to an amazing artistic excellence. The MPO will continue to present its virtuosity outside the concert platform to the underprivileged through its Education & Outreach Programme (ENCOUNTER). It will also continue to nurture the appreciation of music among local talents from the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO).
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Season 2020 of Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO); this is the 22nd season since their inceptions in 1998.

On a final note, I would like to thank our Principal Donor, PETRONAS, and our sponsors, subscribers, collaborators and audiences for the continuous support given to DFP and MPO. Come and join the memorable music journey together with us this season!

YBhg Datuk Hashim Wahir
Kees Bakels has held numerous titled positions with major orchestras including Music Director of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO). Appointed to that position in 1997, he was the central artistic force behind the creation of the MPO, from the auditioning of the musicians leading up to its first rehearsals and inaugural concert which he conducted at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS on 17 August 1998. Other positions have included Principal Conductor of the Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra, Principal Guest Conductor and Artistic Adviser of the Quebec Symphony Orchestra, and Chief Guest Conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. He has conducted all major Dutch orchestras, as well as orchestras in Europe, the USA, Australia and Japan. Bakels was born in Amsterdam and began his musical career as a violinist. He studied conducting at the Amsterdam Conservatoire and the Academy Chigiana in Siena. During his studies, he became Assistant Conductor of the Amsterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and held the position of Associate Conductor. He also became Principal Guest Conductor of the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, which he took to festivals in England, Finland, Belgium, Spain and the USA.

He has conducted concert performances of opera for the VARA Matinee Series at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam for over 25 years. He has championed the lesser-known operas of composers such as Mascagni’s Zanetto, Amica, Il Piccolo Marat, Isabeau, Iris and Nerone, and Leoncavello’s La Bohème, Edipo Re and Zaza. Guest conducting engagements include the Quebec and Victoria Symphonies, Royal Danish Philharmonic, Netherlands Radio Symphony and KBS Symphony Orchestras, and a recording with the Tapiola Sinfonietta and Jean-Jacques Kantorow. In France, he has worked with the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris and Orchestre National de Lille. Bakels’ recordings include with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (Naxos), Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra (NM Classics), Netherlands Chamber Orchestra (Denon), Philharmonia Orchestra (ASV), MPO (BIS), Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra and London Symphony Orchestra.

Sun 25 Oct 3:00pm
Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra Roberto González-Monjas, conductor SCHOECK Sommernacht BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 4 DVOŘÁK Symphony No. 7
According to Nietzsche, “Life without music would be a mistake”. With its universally recognizable opening, thanks to Kubrick’s film “2001: A Space Odyssey”, Strauss’ Also Sprach Zarathustra uses music to portray Nietzsche’s philosophy of existence in the natural world. Multitalented Roberto González conducts and performs Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 3 and graceful Rondo in C Major.
In an époque fraught with rising ethnic tensions and tumultuous politics, Dvořák composed a symphony “capable of stirring the world”. His intense patriotism can be heard through the sunny melodies, rustic dances and pastoral horns which describe his homeland in unique Czech style. Schoeck’s Sommernacht exudes a languid calm, followed by Beethoven’s high-spirited 4th Symphony.

DEWAN FILHARMONIK PETRONAS
58
DEWAN FILHARMONIK PETRONAS Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) is Malaysia’s first concert hall dedicated to classical music and home to the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO). Located at the PETRONAS Twin Towers, it was officially opened on 17 August 1998 by the Patron of the MPO, YABhg. Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Haji Mohd Ali and Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. Designed by Cesar Pelli, the hall takes its inspiration from the traditional shoe-box shape of the great 19th century European concert halls with the magnificent Klais Pipe Organ providing a s pectacular backdrop to the stage. The hall seats 920 people at one time which includes box seats, corporate suites and a royal suite. Acoustics experts Kirkegaard & Associates have incorporated unique acoustical devices into its design to maximize the hall’s natural qualities. DFP plays an integral part in the music and cultural landscape of the city of Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia. It continues to enthral audiences since the day it first opened its doors. World renowned orchestras that have performed here include the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, BBC Symphony and Vienna Symphony. Beyond classical music, DFP has hosted ensembles of jazz and world music genres such as the Count Basie Orchestra, Yellowjackets, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Mezzoforte, Igudesman & Joo, Pink Martini and Gotan Project. International superstars who have graced the stage are Harry Connick Jr., Diana Krall, Anoushka Shankar, Laura Fygi, Zakir Hussain, Larry Carlton, Harvey Malaihollo, Ruth Sahanaya and Judika. Among renowned Malaysian artists who have mesmerized audiences at DFP include SM Salim, Sheila Majid, M Nasir, Siti Nurhaliza, Jamal Abdillah, Khadijah Ibrahim, Ramli Sarip, Ella, Yuna, Faizal Tahir, Dayang Nurfaizah and Misha Omar. It also provides the platform for the talents of young Malaysians from the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO). DFP’s success is attributed to its exceptional architectural design, superior acoustics and recording studio modelled after the legendary Abbey Road Studios. As the first purpose-built concert hall in Malaysia, DFP will continue to provide Malaysians with world-class music experiences through innovative programmes and repertoire every season.

MALAYSIAN PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) gave its inaugural performance at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) on 17 August 1998. With the initial search for outstanding musicians involving a worldwide audition tour, the result was a symphony orchestra made up of musicians from 25 nations, including Malaysians, a remarkable example of harmony among different cultures and nationalities. A host of internationally-acclaimed musicians have performed with the MPO including Lorin Maazel, Sir Neville Marriner, Yehudi Menuhin, Joshua Bell, Harry Connick Jr., JosÊ Carreras, Andrea Bocelli, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Chris Botti and Branford Marsalis, many of whom have praised the MPO for its fine musical qualities and vitality. With each new season, the MPO continues to present an exciting programme of orchestral music drawn from over three centuries, as well as the crowd-pleasing concert series. Its versatility transcends genres, from classical masterpieces to film music, pop, jazz, traditional, contemporary and commissioned works. The MPO regularly performs in major cities of Malaysia. Internationally, it has toured Singapore (1999, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2018), Japan (2001, 2009 and 2017), Korea (2001), Australia (2004), China (2006 and 2019), Taiwan (2007) and Vietnam (2013). The MPO has also released 21 commercial CDs. Its Education and Outreach Programme (ENCOUNTER) reaches beyond the concert platform to develop musical awareness and appreciation through dedicated activities at such diverse venues as schools, colleges, hospitals and community centres. The MPO’s commitment to furthering musical interest in the nation has been the creation of the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO); its debut concert at DFP in 2007 was followed by a Peninsula Malaysia tour. The MPYO has also performed in Sabah and Sarawak, Singapore, Brisbane, Hong Kong and Jakarta. The MPO remains steadfast in its mission to share the depth, power and beauty of great music. Its main benefactor is PETRONAS and its patron is YABhg. Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Haji Mohd Ali.

MALAYSIAN PHILHARMONIC YOUTH ORCHESTRA
The initial steps towards realising the long-cherished dream of the late PETRONAS Chairman, Tun Azizan Zainul Abidin, to create a youth orchestra as a ‘stage for young talents’, alongside the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO), were taken on 13 January 2006. Some 500 aspiring musicians from across Malaysia auditioned and 110 – with an average age of 18 years – were selected to form the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO). After a period of intensive training under its founding conductor, Kevin Field, and mentors drawn from the ranks of the MPO, the MPYO gave its first public concert in Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS on 25 August 2007. It has since established a pattern of music camps held three to four times a year, culminating in performances in Kuala Lumpur and beyond. It has toured Peninsula Malaysia (2007 and 2010), Sabah and Sarawak (2008), Singapore (2009 and 2017), Brisbane, Australia (2012), Kedah (2013), Johor Bahru (2014), Hong Kong (2018) and Jakarta (2019). Auditions are held every year to provide opportunities for talented young Malaysian musicians to join the MPYO and participate in orchestral training and performances, under the guidance of the MPO musicians as tutors. The music repertoire ranges from symphonic repertoire to speciallycommissioned works by Malaysian composers. In an innovative project, ‘Jazzaar’, in 2010, the orchestra collaborated with leading jazz musicians from the USA, led by Fritz Renold who wrote his Suite Nusantara specially for the project. In 2013, the orchestra performed in Kedah with renowned local singers Datin Paduka Julie Sudiro and Datuk Yusni Hamid in a keroncong concert attended by the HRH Agong of Malaysia. In 2014, the ensemble collaborated with Yayasan Warisan Johor and Orkestra Tradisional Malaysia in Johor Baru. In 2015, the MPYO was given the honour to perform at the opening of the 128th International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Kuala Lumpur. In 2017, the MPYO was invited to perform at Majlis Santapan Malam Memuliakan Mesyuarat Majlis Raja-Raja ke-247 at Istana Negara, and Majlis Jamuan Teh Sempena Sambutan Ulang Tahun Hari Keputeraan Rasmi DYMM Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, Sultan Johor.
