HIGHLIGHTS

 City College at Montana State University Billings is in the 2nd year of a five-year, $1.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration Nursing Expansion Program to diversify and expand the nursing workforce in rural Montana. We have been able to remodel our lab space, creating additional simulators for students to work on and allowing us to take additional students into both the practical nursing and registered nursing programs.  We encourage students and families to come visit City College. This past summer we have gone through some substantial remodeling/updating in the Tech building in key student areas and offices.

STUDENT LIFE & COMMUNITY

 Educational and support services are available and tailored to the needs of 11,000 residents of the rural, northeastern Montana reservation. FPCC was granted full accreditation by the Northwest Commission of Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) in December 1991.

 Fort Peck Community College (FPCC), a tribally-controlled community college, was chartered by the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes of the Fort Peck Reservation in 1978.

 This accreditation was reaffirmed following an Interim Report and site visit in 2006, and allows FPCC to continue to offer a variety of certificates, associates, and intercollege bachelor’s degrees. Additionally, FPCC was granted full accreditation by the World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium (WINHEC) in 2009. Also, as a 1994 United Stated Department of Agriculture Land Grant Institution, FPCC has successfully administered agriculture education and research programs responding to local problems and opportunities.

HIGHLIGHTS

 A nine member Board of Directors, of which seven must be enrolled members of the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes, governs the college. The Board of Directors is committed to advancing institutional development through critical thinking, strategic planning, and the application of resources consistent with fulfillment of its mission. This commitment, joined with the inclusion of faculty and staff in establishing policy and performance standards, and institutional assessment criterion, has resulted in a creative approach to addressing student success and community involvement.

 Fort Peck Community College is a tribally controlled community college, chartered by the Tribal Executive Board of the Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes of Fort Peck Indian Reservation in 1978.

 Recent years has witnessed extensive campus growth and development, with acquisition, construction and renovation of campus facilities in both Poplar and Wolf Point. The Wolf Point campus facility was completed for the start of Fall semester, 2003. The new facility provides 12,000 square feet of classroom, office, and multi-purpose space, all of

which is equipped with the finest in technology and distance learning capability. This beautiful structure graces the Wolf Point community from its location at the corner of Third and Benton Streets.

 Significant FPCC milestones include the 1987 acceptance by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, Commission on Colleges for accreditation candidacy, followed by full accreditation in December of 1991. Accreditation was reaffirmed following the 2001 Interim Report, and site visit. Tribal Colleges received United States Department of Agriculture Land Grant status in 1994. As a 1994 Land Grant Institution, FPCC has successfully administered agricultural programs designed to enhance agriculture and community services throughout the area.

 The college is recognized for outstanding academic and vocational education offerings, innovative student services initiatives, and comprehensive community service programs. All of which began when higher education courses were initiated through extension services offered by Dawson Community College, Glendive, Montana in 1969. A cooperative agreement between the Tribal Executive Board and Miles Community College, Miles City, Montana in 1977, provided for the first reservation based courses. This arrangement was funded through a Title III Grant for Developing Institutions.

 This charter followed a 1977 Tribal Executive Board resolution creating the Fort Peck Tribal Education Department, which in turn set the foundation for establishing the college. These two actions secured the Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes as national leaders for tribally controlled education, and placed the college on its path to becoming an effective and successful community based institution of higher learning.

IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW

 Admissions: Fort Peck Community College has an “open door” admissions policy. Anyone who is seventeen (17) years or older who can benefit from the College’s educational offerings and services will be admitted. FPCC does not discriminate on the basis of age, color, religion, creed, disability, marital status, veteran status, national origin, gender or sexual orientation in the education programs which it delivers

 Our Philosophy: To meet the unique educational needs of Indian people, Fort Peck Community College believes that the opportunity for higher education must be provided on the reservation. Since many of the people choose not to leave their homeland, it is necessary that education be brought to them. FPCC is committed to preserving Indian culture, history, and beliefs, and to perpetuating them among the Indian people of all ages. FPCC promotes selfawareness through education necessary to build a career, a lifestyle, and to achieve a true sense of self-pride. Although FPCC does not deny anyone the opportunity for higher education, the institution’s primary purpose is to serve the American Indian population of the Fort Peck Reservation.

Many AA/AS degrees with specific emphases are modeled after BA/BS programs around the state, further streamlining the transfer process.

 Open admission policy, meaning students may apply at any time and need only a high school diploma or high school equivalency credential to gain admission. ACT/SAT not required.

 The Nursing Program application deadline is June 1st. Admission is based primarily on a selective GPA from the required pre-requisite courses and scores on the Kaplan entrance exam (which will be offered on campus in April). A ‘B-‘ or higher is required for all coursework, including prerequisites and general education courses.

 This year we will use a new, online scholarship application platform – the application is open now!

INSTITUTION OVERVIEW

Experience One engages students and faculty in actively exploring the knowledge, purposes, and practices in every field of study. Experiential learning opportunities make up the heart of Experience One, or X1 for short. Here's how it works. You take a single course at a time, three hours each day for 18 days before moving on to the next. Taking four courses or ""blocks"" during the semester, you'll earn the same amount of credit as under traditional multiple class systems. The bottom-line is you truly experience your education through concentrated, active learning. That means you'll have an advantage as you enter the workforce or continue on with graduate studies because your portfolio will already contain real-world educational experiences and projects. These projects often help the community at the same time by providing key services and contributing to ongoing research studies

FINANCIAL AID RESOURCES & REMINDERS

What to do:

The 2024-25 FAFSA form is still available to help students pay for college this academic year. Why wait? It’s FREE!

1)Create an FSA ID and password - SSN, DOB, Phone #

2)Parents create their own FSA IDs - Unique email for each parent 3)studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa

Contact your college’s financial aid office for help.

The financial aid offices at colleges and universities across Montana are invaluable resources for students, guardians, and counselors. The Montana Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (MASFAA) designates financial aid regions, so K-12 schools have specific postsecondary institutions for support.

Depending on availability, proximity, and other circumstances, colleges can provide support outside of their regions, but the above designations generally allow for in-person events and college selection that is popular and relevant among student bodies. In addition to FAFSA completion events, consider working with financial aid offices to hold FAFSA prep events before the 2025-26 form opens for 2025 high school graduates.

Many financial aid offices provide direct support events to students and informational sessions for counselors. Reach out to your regional institution’s financial aid office for event dates and local resources.

The 2025-26 FAFSA will open to all students on or before December 1, 2024. For more information, visit: studentaid.gov

CAMPUSVISITTIPS

The only way to truly get a feel for a college campus is to actually visit. If you haven?t taken the time to narrow your choices, campus visits can be challenging because you:

? ? May not have time to get to all the campuses.

? ? You may not be able to afford a visit to each campus, and you won?t be able to distinguish the campuses when you have too many to chose from. Your best bet is to narrow your choices and visit your top 3-6 schools.

Goalsof aCampusVisit

? ? Meet with an admissions staff member and any other important staff or faculty (financial aid officer, faculty member, etc..).

? ? Get a feeling for the academic and social atmosphere.

? ? See the facilities to be used for study, living, recreation, etc.

? ? Talk with students currently attending the school.

students like to just ?show up?on campus when the time is good for them. If you haven?t taken the time to notify someone that you are visiting, you will probably not get to see and do all you hoped to do.

? ? Inform the college of your special areas of interest (academic area, extracurricular interests) so the admission staff can plan a more meaningful visit for you.

? ? Review the publications (view book, catalog, and web site) before you attend the visit. That information will help you develop a list of questions and issues you would like to discuss.

? ? Plan to spend at least half a day (a full day is preferable) at each college.

Inadditiontoatour of campus,youshouldtry todothefollowing:

? ? Attend a class to get an idea of typical size, teaching style, and academic atmosphere.

? ? Meet with the Financial Aid staff.

? ? Engage students (other than the tour guide) in conversation.

? ? Spend some time in the student center or student union to get a feel for the campus community.

? ? Spend some time in the outside community--eat at a restaurant, do some shopping, tour the surrounding neighborhoods.

? ? Read the school and local newspapers and browse the bulletin boards around campus.

? ? Keep notes on your visit and discuss your impressions with your parents and/or counselor.

DETERMININGQUALITY

What isAccreditation?

One way to help determine overall quality of a college or university is to make sure it is accredited. The goal of accreditation is to ensure that education provided by institutions of higher education meets acceptable levels of quality. Because there is no centralized authority exercising control over colleges and universities in the United States, institutions can vary widely in the character and quality of their programs. Therefore, accreditation is one way to protect the quality of education at various colleges and universities.

Typesof Educational Accreditation

Institutional: Overall, the institution is meeting its objectives.

Specialized / Programmatic: Normally applies to programs, departments, or schools that are parts of an institution.

For MoreInformationAbout Accreditation

You should always make sure that the school you are interested in is accredited by a recognized accrediting agency. It is one way to ensure that you?ll get what you pay for. To check regional and national accrediting agencies that are recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education, visit: http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation

RESEARCHCAREERS BEFORETHE COLLEGEFAIR

To get the most out of a College Fair it is important to prepare in advance. Using the following tools will help you figure out what career interest you have. These tips will also help you decide which colleges you want to talk to at the College & Career Fair and the types of questions you want to ask the school representatives.

OCCUPATIONALRESEARCH& JOBOUTLOOK

What does the future hold for your interests? What are the odds of getting a job in that field? Will there be plenty of jobs available when you are ready to graduate from college, or will

those positions be highly competitive? You can find the answers to these questions at the U.S. Department of Labor which publishes 10-year projections for U.S. workers in its Occupational Outlook Handbook.

For more research on job outlook check out : www.bls.gov

TRAININGRESEARCH

Whatever you choose, you?ll be able to interact with professionals who work in that field and have a great background to answer your questions. This way you will see first-hand what they do on a daily basis. To find out more about jobs and the training and education that is required to reach your occupational dream, try using the Montana Career Information System (MCIS) to aid in your research.

To access this tool visit: www.portal.mtcis.intocareers.org

DISCOVERINGJOBSKILLS

In your research, you may discover you need to develop some important job skills depending on your career choice. You may be able to gain these skills in your high school classes. However, it is likely that the skills you will require for many jobs in the

future will be gained in college or by on-the-job training. One way to find out about a job is to ?shadow?someone in the field. If you are looking to go into medicine, volunteer at your local hospital. If you want to be an auto mechanic, find a job at a local repair shop. Whatever you choose, you?ll be able to interact with professionals who work in that field and have a great background to answer your questions. This way you will see first-hand what they do on a daily basis.

RESEARCHYOURSELF 5STEPSTOTAKE!

1 Examine Your Personality: Are you shy or reserved?Thoughtful or impulsive? Outgoing?Logical?Sensitive?Your personality traits are significant factors in determining which careers are best suited to you. Take a personality inventory test like the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI). Talk to your Guidance Counselor to find out more about personality inventories.

2 Determine Your Interests: Ask yourself some questions like: What makes you happy? If you had spare time, what would you do?Do you like to read? What are your hobbies?

3 Think About Your Skills: Are you the friend that everyone calls when they have a

problem?Do you excel in sports? Can you take apart a motor, put it back together, and have no extra parts? In English Literature class are you able to easily find the meaning by the author?

4 Take an Aptitude Test: Beyond just answering these questions and asking yourself others like them, you can also learn more about your career-related (or ?vocational?) skills by taking an aptitude test. One thorough test is the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude test (ASVAB). Talk to your Guidance Counselor about taking this test.

5 Use Your Resources: Guidance Counselors are trained to help you get to know yourself. Teachers can provide great experiences about their college and career choices as well. Talk to your parents and other relatives about their jobs, and how they got them. Don?t overlook your friend?s parents, for they can offer a different perspective about your future as well.

AFEWCAREERSTEPS&TIPS

According to Allison Cheston, high school students who work part-time, volunteer or do internships usually find a successful career path by their late 20?s. Cheston writes that there are five things a student should know about careers as soon as possible.

Those five things are:

- Whatever you find interesting is a clue to your career path.

- Having a mentor is critical to career success, Find one early.

- Internships are the best way to be exposed to possible careers.

- Networking is still a great way to find a job.

- Make researching career options a priority.
