PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY by Rev. Taylor Pryde Barefoot

V i s i t o u r we b s i te w w w. mye r s p a rk u m c .o r g to find small groups, ways to serve and engage, how to give, and plug in with other members of our church!

OUR CLE RGY Dr. James C. Howell Senior Pastor Rev. Nathan Arledge Pastor of Missions & Community Engagement Rev. Taylor Barefoot Pastor for Emerging Ministries

This Sunday, we are reflecting on the “beauty of weakness.” We see that weakness is not a failure or something to hide or be ashamed of, but rather an invitation to be loved. Weakness requires us to admit we need each other, and allows us to be wrapped in the love of our church. A group of women in the church have chosen to make beauty out of weakness through the ministry of knitting prayer shawls. This ministry has touched the lives of hundreds of our church members as people have received shawls, lap blankets and baby blankets for surgeries, illnesses, and for new babies. These items are blessed and shared by other ministry leaders blanketing all in need with prayer. This ministry reminds us that in our most vulnerable and our weakest states we are not alone. The constant weight of the blanket on the hospital bed reminds us that we are blanketed in love and prayers from Myers Park United Methodist Church. Group founder, Gena Barnett describes the ministry as, “a group of dedicated women who meet weekly on Thursday afternoon to knit or crochet, shawls, lap blankets, and baby blankets for anyone in need of one.” We meet from 1:30-3:30 every Tuesday in room 106. We always welcome anyone who would like to be a part of the group. Even if you can’t knit, we can teach you!” Contact Gena Barnett for more details 704-575-4937 The blankets are displayed today in worship. We encourage you to take some time and pray over this ministry and all that it has and will impact.

AN EVENING WITH KATHY IZARD by Amy Harriman

Kathy Izard, local author and champion in the fight against homelessness, was with us to share how she heard God’s whisper to do something about the homeless population in Charlotte. Kathy’s award-winning memoir, The Hundred Story Home, has been inspiring readers since its release in June 2018.

Rev. Jessica Dayson Pastor for Young Adults & Lay Involvement Rev. Uiyeon Kim Pastor of Discipleship Rev. Bill Roth Pastor of Congregational Care Rev. Nancy Watson Executive Pastor

TALK WITH A PASTOR A pastor on staff stands ready to respond to your question or concern. Those needing immediate pastoral help should call 704-376-8584 and follow the prompts to the pastor on call.

Kathy read her latest book, a children’s book, A Good Night for Mr. Coleman to those gathered in Jubilee Hall. The book tells the story of Grace, a young girl who befriends a homeless man while volunteering at a soup kitchen. Once she learned Mr. Coleman had no bed of his own, Grace began selling lemonade to buy beds for homeless neighbors. This story for kids is about believing in themselves and something bigger. Kathy challenged the kids to “Do Good” and believe in their dreams. Approximately 45 elementary-aged children gathered to make more than 400 sandwiches for the Urban Ministry Center. While the children were busy “Doing Good” by making sandwiches, the adults had the opportunity to listen to Kathy’s inspirational, timely, and empowering message. She left us with two questions to ponder. What’s calling you? What is God whispering to you to do something about?
