Brookdale Innovation Grants (BIG) Proposal Guide
Purpose The purpose of Brookdale Innovation Grants (BIG) is to encourage creative thinking and innovation to enhance educational programs and improve services to students. This grant program is sponsored by the Brookdale Community College Foundation, the College’s General Fund, and the Professional Development Standing Committee of Governance. Approximately 11-15 grants ranging from $1,200 to $1,500 will be awarded from the $15,300 funding available this year. Full-time faculty, staff, and administrators are invited to submit proposals which demonstrate both innovation and collaboration and display a clear benefit to the college. Projects must be aligned with the college’s current strategic priorities and address initiatives identified in Department Plans (DP). (Department Plans can be obtained through the Department or Division Chairs.)
Examples of college priorities eligible for the current funding round include but are not limited to:
TEACHING AND LEARNING u Develop strategies that address diverse learning needs u Respond to new student demographics with academic support and technology u Increase initiatives that emphasize cultural and global awareness and diversity u Develop pedagogies and curriculum for greater student engagement u Continue focus on Basic Skills enrollment and outcomes
TARGETED GROWTH AND MISSION PRIORITIES u Expand Entrepreneurial College and initiatives u Expand Workforce Development programs
u Address preparation of students for college-level work
OPPORTUNITIES FOR ADVANCEMENT AND IMPROVEMENT u Connect Student Life and Activities with academic programs u Expand student services and student life programs at HECs and Branch Campus u Increase student success among lower-performing students
ACCREDITATION: Federal, State, County & BOT Initiatives u Develop P-12, Teacher and Healthcare Worker Education initiatives

Review Criteria: The following criteria will be used for evaluating proposals: u Clearly articulates the need for the project u Demonstrates creativity and innovation in the project being proposed u Is aligned with college, division, and department plans u Enhances the quality of education or services to students u Demonstrates evidence of benefit to students/college u Describes how success of project will be measured u Fully justifies budget request
u Describes how the BIG award, depending on appropriateness of the project, could serve as a catalyst for development of a large-scale grant application appropriate for submission to an external funding agency. The Office of Grants and Institutional Development will provide support for any such initiative.

Level of Funding: Awards range from $1,200 to $1,500, with a maximum of $1,500. Total Funds Available: $15,300
Project timeline: u Applications distributed on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 u Grant submission deadline is Friday, April 4, 2008 u Grants will be announced by the end of April u Grants are one year in duration

Notification: Notification of awards will be made in writing to all applicants selected. Letters will also be sent to those not selected, encouraging submission for future funding cycles.
Final Presentation and Report: All Brookdale Innovation Grant recipients will be required to demonstrate outcomes of their projects to the campus community through a scheduled presentation and a final written report detailing the project outcomes.
