Maya Angelou
April 4, 1928- May 28, 2014 • • •
Early Life: Born Marguerite Annie Johnson St. Louis, MO. Her parents splitted up when she was very young. She & her older brother Bailey were sent to live with their father’s mother Anne Henderson in Stamps Arkansas. During a visit with her mother Angelou was raped by her mother’s boyfriend., As vengeance Angelou’s uncles killed the boyfriend. She returned to Arkansas she spent years as a virtual mute.
Interesting Facts: • In 1944 a 16-year old Maya Angelou gave birth to a son-Guy Johnson. • It was her brother Bailey who nicknamed her “Maya” • After she spent years as a virtual mute she wrote “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sing” she felt her voice killed the man raped her. Maya Angelou should be inducted into Costley Black History Hall Of Fame because I feel her story would connect to hidden people. Her quotes will inspire a lot of people. Maya Angelou has a hard background from since she was a kid due to her parents issues she & her older brother Bailey had to live with their father’s mom in Arkansas she received a lot of racial comments due to her color. I feel that Costley focus on Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr. But without help from other civil rights activists like
Maya Angelou we would not have the world we have today. Maya Angelou is one of my personal favorites she was a Poet, Author & Civil Rights Activist and and awardwinning author for her most known poem “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. In conclusion Maya Angelou has done & been through a lot the time she was here with us, I feel we should just not honor others but remember her. She deserves to be in the Costley Black History Month Hall Of Fame.
