April 7,1915 –July 17,1959 Early Life • She was born in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania to Sarah Julia “Sadie” Fagan & Clarence Holiday • She was raised by her aunts mother in law Martha Miller…Holiday suffered from her mothers absences & leaving her in other people care for the first 10 years of her life • She was placed in the House of Shepherd under protective custody because she was almost sexual abused by her neighbor Wilbur Rich Interesting Facts • She started singing in various night clubs • At 17 she replaced the singer Monette Moore at a club Catted Covans • She made her first recordings with Benny Goodman Billie Holiday deserves to be inducted into the Black History Hall of Fame because she was an important part of history. She performed and recorded in a jazzy “swing-sing” style from 1933 to 1958 with pianist-bandleaders Benny Goodman, Teddy Wilson, Count Basie, Artie Shaw and others. She sung amazing like “Strange Fruits” & “God Bless the Child”.
