A Contextual Perspective to Reshape the Hillside

This project is in Su'ao, a small town in Yilan, northern Taiwan. project was to revitalize the train station square and construct based on a study of the local context and history.

Our team abandoned the original plan to place the bus station train station; instead, we relocated it to the east and removed

Hillside Town

Taiwan. The objective of this construct a new bus station station next to the existing removed several abandoned storage facilities. A curved steel outdoor corridor connected the existing train station with the new bus transit station. This change in design has resulted in a new eastwest path of buses and passengers facing a historical river. By preserving the area in front of the train station, a new plaza has been added for the city to welcome travelers.

Establishing a New Entry to the Town through Connections with the Surrounding Environment

By transforming the landscape, residents and tourists can stroll through the new public open space surrounded by trees and rhododendrons. Our team aimed to rediscover the historical river to the east and promote thriving local economic activity to the north. Through this integrated approach, we aim to reshape the small town based on the perspective of the geographical environment.

A Earthy Shed that Captures Light

We creat a skylight that is incorporated to capture soft light from the north, providing a different experience for passengers waiting for the bus below the big concrete roof. The outside of the roof is decorated with small stones to resemble the texture of land. For the interior, polished stone is used on the walls and dyed green to associate with plants. The ceiling uses concrete texture, representing the regional industry that processes raw materials for concret.
