I have come to understand that all designed objects, whether conceived by an architect, artist, graphic designer or photographer, tell a story. This story is a means of transmitting experiences and becomes the exploration of a narrative. Architects, for example, have long sought to communicate their craft through their building imagery, which is the core of their experiences. This imagery is a synthesis of their imagination and evolves as a fairytale presented in the language of tectonics. It is a combination of contraries: the sublime and the simple, the dramatic and the dreary, the eccentric and conventional that are made real by knowledge and depend on storytelling for guidance and inspiration. This portfolio is an investigation of storytelling in architecture through process and product performed in mixed media.

ARCH 4010 | fall 2012

Location: Charlottesville, VA The spaces in this urban house, designed as a living and working space for a baker and a photographer, are distributed along different zones that run across the site vertically and horizontally. These zones divide the program in the house, creating a duplex in which the bottom two floors are primarily workspaces and the top two floors are living spaces. With a series of apertures throughout the house, views are framed that organize these spaces and spatially connect different parts of the house, as well as create a sense of lift and movement throughout the site.

Design Center | spring 2013

Kim Tanzer, Dean at the School of Architecture, along with Lucie Wall Stylianopoulos, Head of the Arts Libraries and Librarian for Archaeology and Classics, asked at the Design Center at the School of Architecture to establish a renovation and expansion proposal for the Fiske Kimball Fine Arts Library. The project concluded with a proposal that was designed for changes brought to the site at different scales. Spanning from small, medium, large and extra-large the Design Center provided solutions to specific concerns relating to the various dysfunctional aspects at Fiske Kimball Fine Arts Library.

Proposed outdoor plan establishing clear connections and universal access to the Art Grounds, improving the overall domesticity of the site.

Location: Chandigarh, Udaipur, Pondicherry in India This studio was a rigorous graduate level program in India focusing on ways to observe and transform the pre-conditions of nature and the framing strategies of cities in order to project three learning places for India in the 21st Century.

Location: New York, NY This project is a design for a hotel location along the High Line that is intended for visitors who are staying for a short trip in the city. It is initiated from a design of a small, modular room- a POD, that can host a person comfortably in a room that is 80sq ft.

Location: Forney, Texas

Filtering Forney is a masterplan for a development in Forney, Texas, a small town outside of Dallas. This project, initiated by developer Taylor Armstrong the owner of this 1,000-acre property, focused on adopting a natural filtration system to collect and purify gray water on the site. The aim was to create a system that would relieve one of the largest problems this topography faces- of water- and to create a new type of community that addresses and supports such change and progresses towards a more sustainable lifestyle.

Pieces II, 2013 acrylic paint, washers, nuts, bolts, thread on canvas 16 in x 34 in Pieces II, a diptych painting, is about drawing relationships between the basic geometries, circle and square, and colors to create an overall ordered painting.

For Bob, 2013 acrylic paint, light bulb, wire, screws, pins, tape, nuts, bolts, recycled plastic, metal ruler, metal revolving star on recycled wood 36 in x 36 in For Bob, is a construction that is a direct response and interpretation of Robert Rauschenbergâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work and the abstraction of the American Flag. It consists of recycled or found materials that play with the geometries and the proportions of the shapes in the Flag. The main visual force used in this piece is shear that helps to make connections between the different fragments.

Trespass addresses the American Flag in a more direct and obvious manner where the notion of the stars and stripes are more evident. The overall emotions of these pieces are more melancholy and are meant to trespass the viewers feelings making the interpretation of the painting unique to each person.

Sustainable Europe

| MARIAM RAHMATULLAH

Studied three interrelated modules: planning policies in sustainability, sustainable urban development and sustainable urban transport. This graduate level program was in collaboration with students and professors from University of Virginia and Virginia Institute of Technology.

Photography and Contemporary Art History

Primarily used a hand-crafted portable pinhole camera and studied the history of photography and contemporary art in Italy.
