AXIS
DETAIL
PRIMARY
The main focus of dynamic procession is creating a new axis on the arsenal. The axis of the arsenal site has been used consistently over the past years as a direct pedestrian route thru the area. In order to maximize the idea of this axis a new procession was created thru the site utilizing the existing elements. The main focus was to create a procession that allows for the influx of more people while also creating a new immergence feeling to it. Making each leg different from the last. Energizing it and making it something that is in event in itself. The new axis stems from the intersection of main elements that exist on the site along with some secondary elements which anchor them. These secondary elements shift the axis along the main directionalities. The major focus for these shifts is to create thresholds in the grounds change peoples directionality and presenting them with something new.

In order to maximize movement thru the site and allow for the new programmatic elements the preexisting thresholds on the site are expanded to create hubs in the site. The emphasis on these portals in the site are to compress and release people at different points on the site. This is to allow people to create new or differing experiences as they move thru the site. This creates pause elements into the procession preventing it from being solely about movement and becoming an even in itself. The main elements of these portals is morphing wood walls which attach and detach from the concrete walls. The wood is utilized to create personal scale to the large openings. They morph to change from a wall to an overhead or a wall to a bench. Thus creating a duality between what a wall is and isn’t. This elements also reach out into the site to mimic hands which reach out to invite people in. As you progress more and more into the building the intensity of these pieces increase creating a further sense of enclosure and compression.

The main program of the project is a new exhibition center and auditorium for the city of verona. It consists of an exhibition hall, a main ballroom, a junior ballroom, 13 meetings rooms, an executive board room, and an auditorium. Along with these elements exists the support spaces.
In order to maximize exposure of different programmatic pieces on the site, the buildings are anchored off of the new axis. Utilizing the axis as an armature the elements then align with the axis to create view lines and informal and formal courtyards. The main focus of the courtyards was to create a secondary circulation system on the site. The new courtyards cross the axis between buildings acting much the same that they did with the arsenal buildings.
AUDITORIUM SHIFT DIAGRAM:
Utilizing the bending and morphing of the plates the main separation of the main auditorium space and the support spaces relies almost completely on horizontal elements. This is utilized to create a seemingly barriorless entry into the auditorium.
PLATE TECTONICS DIAGRAM
To bridge the dynamic shifts of elements in the structures and ground a system of terraces and plates are utilized to ease the transition. Thus preventing space from being wasted in sharp corners.

In analyzing the city of Vicenza the first thing that was noticed was the way in which the arcades affect street life. The movement and pace of the pedestrian is related to the scale and porosity of the street facades. As an edge becomes more dense or less porous pace slows as people walking by have to take in the store fronts in smaller quantities. Utilizing this observation the levels and densities were mapped along a very busy stretch of Corso Palladio. From this observation varying typologies were analyzed based on their affect on pace in relation to the main road way. The major system’s that were observed were; vaulted, column beam, open, and solid. Each system holds its own means of threshold and aperture and those creates a different condition. This come from both the physical nature of them being solid or void, and also the metaphysical relation of differing geometries. Geometries like the vault which creates more of a sense of enclosure utilizng the same size openings. SCALE OF ARCADE

LAYERED FACADE
Utilizing multiple layers within the facade light, weather, noise, and pedestrian exposure can be utilized to invite people into the building and throughout the structure. Voids and gaps are created to allow noise and site lines between differing spaces throughout the structure.
DIFFERING PROGRAMMATIC EXPOSURE
Three main exposure types are utilized to create different market environments. Spaces can be completely internal, completely external, a mixture of the two. While simple in idea the porosity of the spaces are directly connected to there exposure. Those internal spaces shut themselves off externally but allow for more personal connection with the specific merchant. The layout of these different elements is such that exposure from the differing circulation routes is maximized.

The program of Market Shift is primarily an open air vertical market. Utilizing the analysis of Vicenza differing edge conditions are created to create a system of hide and reveal. This is used to draw people into the space and at the same time allow people from afar to have a different experience. The program of the structure comes from the need of a constant market presence in the city. The city presently has streets markets which occur twice a week and other markets which occur every few weeks. The gaps that are created leave a void for people looking to sell goods and buy goods that would predominantly be from a more mobile merchant. In order to maximize space the different market elements were vertically stacked. This stacking also allows for shoppers to have more one on one connections with the merchants as spaces can be utilized by one large merchant or a few small merchants. At the top of the structure a small food court exists. This food court is meant to create a local food area where people can stop for a quick lunch or try a new cuisine.

The project also expands out into the piazza to develop the area which is utilized during the street markets. The area is developed to division off and create hubs for which the merchants can park and setup. The main element of this is the external wall which divides the piazza into two half’s. This was placed to invert the present system which has merchants parking on opposites sides of the street. Instead merchants park back to back with the wall separating them. This new system allows for two means of circulation during market times and maximizes attention of people passing by. This also creates a more structured system for novice market attendees during times in which the market is heavily populated. The construction of the main wall element utilizes a system of opaque metal panels over a mesh skin. This construction was utilized to create a porous division that is solid in its division of the space but still allows visual connection with things on the opposite side. Thus preventing people from being visually disconnected from merchants on the other side.
The wall system is also utilized to create a visual fissure in the ground that creates a connection with the lounge which exists under the street. The wall slides into the space breaking open the ground around it and allowing both light and site lines into the spaces below from street level. Once underground the walls give way to columns which structure the spaces below.
