Make the most of the space Choosing a cavernous, urban venue means there’s often lots of space to fill, so break up the space by creating different areas- you could use vintage furniture for a chillout area, get yourself a big ass bouncy castle, or hire in some retro arcade games to keep kids (and big kids!) entertained.
Warehouses usually boast impressive doubleheight ceilings, so make the most of exposed beams and trusses to create eye-catching hanging installations. If you’ve got the budget for it, statement floral installations are our favourite- choose a florist who is experienced in these- there’ll usually be a site visit required so the mechanics of the install can be established first. Draping material can also help soften the space and divide up distinct areas (and can also be used to hide storage and food prep areas!) If you’re less fussed on flowers, you could use hanging plants, paper lanterns or statement round balloons to contrast with the original features of the buildings and add some colour and atmosphere.
Lighting Industrial spaces need good lighting to add warmth and a bit of romance to their stark interiors. Festoon lighting will transform the space as day turns to night, and we’re also a big fan of accentuating features like original steel columns and beams.
Candles dotted around in cold corners and alcoves are perfect for highlighting the building’s natural beauty and architecture and make for some stunning photos that prove that urban spaces can be both cosy and cool. Neon signs at weddings have been going strong for several years now, and they really do add a brilliant vibrant glow to urban spaces, and provide a great backdrop for photos. Many companies offer the option of custom neons now, so if you want to splash out on something to then hang in your home the option is there- or you can choose from their hire stock.

Decor Warehouses and other urban spaces are blank canvases that you can do as much or as little as you like with. Minimalist-inspired decor with lots of clean lines sit beautifully alongside existing fixtures and fittings and let the character and charm of the building be the star of the show. At Inner City Weddings, we have our own purpose-built tables, as well as our mismatched industrial chairs to create a look that’s in simpatico with some of the spaces we pop up in, but we also cross hire from other supplier friends if a couple wants a different aesthetic for their wedding, or if we feel a space would be better suited to alternative furniture.

Simple accents add features to exposed walls of bare brick or concrete, so if you’re looking for a budget friendly option, simple hoops with foliage on or foliage sheafs can do just that. Glass, metal and copper are materials that work brilliantly in industrial spaces, but we love adding natural touches of flora and fauna to soften harsh, steely interiors.
If you’re feeling bold, adding bright colours that pop will contrast vividly with whitewash walls and make for stunning photos and add a vibrant feel to cold spaces. Pick a statement colour, or go all out and use lots of bright primary colours to create an explosion of colour on your blank canvas. Food

Be aware of the fact that lots of industrial venues are just that - buildings that were originally built as mills or factories tend to be pretty limited when it comes to modern kitchen facilities! Don’t let this put you off, though - lots of caterers and street food vendors work brilliantly in spaces like these. Many industrial venues will happily accommodate trailers and food trucks in the ample space inside, too. Outside space
Lastly, don’t forget that urban venues tend to be situated in the heart of industrial areas, which provide a stunning backdrop for photos. Explore the local area and make sure you make the most of the exterior of the building and its surroundings in your pictures. Here in Sheffield, the city is peppered with amazing murals and street art that celebrates the industrial heritage of the city, as well as its diverse independent art community- so make sure you talk to your photographer about capturing not only the space you’re getting hitched in, but the urban landscape around it.

What inspired you to start Ard Bakery? I was working for a fashion label, when I got pregnant with my second child. I had always loved baking, and while on maternity leave I started experimenting with creating cakes which where decorated in a much more graphic and geometric way than I had seen before. I started posting them on instagram and began getting a lot of requests from friends at first, then from strangers. That’s when I thought this could work as a business. I never went back to work, and ARD Bakery was born What makes your work unique? I think the style is quite different from a lot of cakes on the market. They are colourful, bold and graphic, which is not what you might expect from a cake.
What kind of couples are ‘your couples’? A lot of couples I make cakes for are in creative industries, or appreciate a modern design aesthetic and want a centrepiece that is a real showstopper. What would be your advice for couples looking to plan a wedding totally unique to them? Go with what you love, and don’t care about trying to please others! Every cake I design is in collaboration with the couple, so input from them is really important. It doesn’t need to be a huge folder of ideas, a single image can be just as powerful. What inspires you? My inspiration comes from a diverse range of sources: architecture, lighting design, textiles and graphic design as well as print and sculpture. Mr & Mrs Unique Page 18
