Museo Graphika

A Museum of Graphic Design Elevating Creativity through Augmentation of Realms between Architecture and Virtual Senses 2021

With the continuous development of technology, different mediums for art are emerging on different platforms. With the emergence of digital art, most graphic artist or students are delving into this type of art form. In other countries, integrating technology in arts has been a trend. There are many museums and schools with state-of-the-art facilities that cater to the needs and demands of digital art such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and Mori Museum in Tokyo, Japan. In the Philippines, despite the inexhaustible pool of talents, the country creative industry still remains vulnerable to the higher profiles in global market caused by inadequate facilities that offer courses for this field and museums that promote digital interventions in art.

10
01

In order to adapt with the technological advancements in the local creative industry, our country must establish facilities that can cater creative and innovative solutions for the development of our creative scene. These are the challenges that are being considered.

Museo Graphika is an institution that integrates art, technology, environment, people, and architecture. Combining different dimensions to elevate the local creative scene and provide a better interactive learning experience enhancing creativeness in able for the country to adapt for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

1. The Art 2. Glass Box

Design Concept

Multiple Realities. In a museum, art is displayed in a glass box that is contained inside a room that is also a part of a structure. A box within a box within a box and so on. Another example of this phenomenon in a museum is the observer observes the art, and the art observes the observer. As the art progresses, the observers can now interact with the art’s movement, producing another masterpiece making the observers an integral part of the art itself without the observers noticing it. This idea of infinite representation and the existence of different realms within the museum influenced the concept of the Multiple Realities— that the universe is an endless chain that exists in different dimensions thus connected with all the other links.

In this concept, “Multiple Realities” is how the museum integrates the virtual realm of architecture into the built environment to influence creativity and immersive architecture storytelling, allowing the general users to be part of the creative realm.

By engaging the augmented realm, the designer must engage between the seen and the unseen of the systems, physical architectural experience, and the virtual counterpart.

Adaptive and Interactive Façade System

- Kinetic and augmented façade system that adjusts based on the desirable lighting. This system also connects art to the public realm.

Extended Reality - By using multiple layers of space –physical and virtual, users can have an immersive learning experience inside the museum.

Architecture Storytelling - Expressing emotions through art and architecture

Scale Dimension Interplay - Exploration of the width and the height of space for dimension hierarchy.

Visual Encounter - Spaces that promote user interaction and creative activity.

Ideas Linked - Active dimensions that generate exchanges of ideas and creativity providing users a space for a creative discussion.

Philosophy

Approaching the continuous developing future is a challenge, not just for the designers but also the way we live. This principle guided the designer to use the emerging resources to adapt and innovate the way people interact and share stories through spaces.

“I would like my architecture to inspire people to use their own resources, to move into the future.” - Tadao Ando

Facade Elevation

The floating structure is covered by transparent LED modular panels serving as a big canvas where they can feature various design made by the local artists. Aside from highlighting local creativity, visitors from the gallery can also see through the facade allowing them to have a panoramic view of New Clark City.

ACADEMIC WORKS

ACADEMIC WORKS

A collection of my works during college. My works have always been inspired by movies, fictions, and art. These inspirations motivated me to tell a story through architecture, providing a space that can empathize with its users.

Laya Maynila

Project Brief

The project calls for an experiential museum to commemorate the hardships endured by the Philippines during the World War 2. The said museum is located at the Rajah Sulayman Theatre, ruins of the old Officers’ Barracks during the Spanish Era, inside Fort Santiago, Intramuros, Philippines.

In retrospect, the city of Manila was the second city which was heavily devastated during the war. There are no remnants of such destruction as the city regained and rebuilt the shape of the city. Having this into consideration, where Filipinos have a vague physical and tangible reminder of the history, the new experiential museum will serve as a bridge to connect such gap between the Filipinos and their history, and to make them understand the value and importance of the freedom which was fought by the brave people of the past.

The new experiential museum should showcase chronological events and scenarios during the war. Each point should have a uniform thematic approach in exhibiting the events, where each point can accommodate at least 10 individuals. To create an in-depth “experiential” exhibition, the designer can utilize technological advancement in portraying significant events.

Redefining Restoration: Unravelling Filipino Identity

The Philippines had been under the rule of colonizers in the past centuries and was finally liberated after World War II. Although physical colonization is a thing in the past, yet we, Filipinos are still very much colonized mentally and psychologically by our colonizers. Our perception of their superiority has caused a cultural identity crisis within our nation. And today, the biggest question we ask ourselves is “What is Filipino?”

The museum is a restoration project of the Rajah Sulayman Theatre inside Fort Santiago. The Rajah Sulayman Theater is what’s left of and important location during World War II. The design acknowledges the site’s historical significance by complementing a contemporary design rather than a reconstruction of its original structure. The parameter results to a design that is a contemporary museum experience that aims to attract the future generation to learn from the past and be inspired to lead into the future to realize the richness of Filipino identity

The OM House

A House for The Legally Blind 2019

We are always afraid of blindness, but blind people are more aware in their surroundings than normal people. In a way, they can see what we see. Esref Armagan a blind Turkish painter, was born without sight to an impoverished family, he thought himself to paint and write. When neuroscientists scanned his brain while painting by FMRI (Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging), they spotted his occipital cortex functioning which is the part of our brain that is responsible in processing visuals in our memory.

32
“Behind the eyes that don’t see is a brain that sees.”
03

With this in mind, the designer came up with the concept of Byakugan. The Byakugan is a fictional state where an individual has a powerful range of 360° vision which giving the user the ability to see great distances and see other’s chakra or inner energy. The designer thinks of incorporating this poetic idea into spaces, providing a 360° view of Taal and Batangas in all Major Spaces at the same time enhancing and stimulating the client’s other sensorial experience. The concept aims to activate other cortex of the client’s brain that is associated with visual processing, perception and recognition of auditory stimuli, and movement. With this, strategical design solutions that will let the client be independent and enjoy the functionality of his house is the main goal.

Architectural Interior Design and Visualization 201904

The client Mr. Lingad and his family are programmers and tech experts who seeks to live in a cozy tropical High End 3-Bedroom unit. Programmers are often exposed to blue lights or artificial lights and radiation coming from their computer screens. To resolve this issue, the interior design should be more connected to nature to stimulate their other senses and might help them to take a break from blue lights.

The designer proposed a more tropical approach, letting the natural sunlight penetrate the interior while being surrounded by tropical plants as requested by the client. The color palette that the designer chose is neutral and earth colors creating a cozy feeling for the overall aesthetics of the condo unit.

Cultural Cloud

24H competition 38th edition - culturEart 2022 - honorable mention

In today’s fast-growing digital world, we can see the rise of NFTs, metaverses, web 3.0 and different online platforms which can be used to educate and inform everyone about culture in our society. Portraying culture in today’s technology filled world uses digital networks to recreate tangible - world cultures or create new ideas of cultural thought and native practices through digital networks. Upon transitioning to digital culture, there exists a global point of view alongside the physical world. Videos that go viral, trending hashtags, the latest tiktok trend, although no one can say how and why they go viral. All we can say is that through the digital world we can reach there are limitless possibilities of connection. Anyone can participate no matter where you are, we are able to remedy old media and transform them into something new again through digital spaces. The team hypothesizes that the shifting of cultural exchange and education into the cloud and decentralization of cultural civic spaces may become mainstream in the next decade or the near future.

Cultural Cloud will be a new typology of cultural civic space that can be set up and accessed anywhere in the world in any plot of available open space. Cultural Cloud will be made up of a server and a pavilion. The server will help transmit cultural exhibits, performances, or events and translate them to the pavilion, the physical space. It will also provide real time connections with the audience through the cloud. When the cultural clouds all over the world are put together, they form a giant venue that transcends continents. This will not only bring culture and art closer to the people but also bring and connect people all over the world together.

When we talk about culture, it is a reflection of the community we live in, and the knowledge we gain shapes our community. With enough opportunities and freedom, we are able to not only live but also create a work of magic, joy and wonder that removes the boundaries of the physical space. To be able to be free and be able to share our own creativity to everyone around us is a stepping stone to connectedness and we are able to imagine the perfect world for us.

44
Transmitting/Receiving the Signal The First Step of the server transmits and receives the signal from different servers located around the world. For example, a server in America located in New York can share knowledge about their culture to a server in Asia located in Dubai. Projecting the Signal The Second Step of the server projects the received signal. Here the cultural exchange center in New York can now view the sent signal from Dubai so that the people there can learn something new about that certain culture. Real Time Interaction Lastly, once the server is able to transmit the signal, comes the real life interaction. Here, the people from New York and Dubai are able to connect with each other through technology. They are able to build connections with one another and further learn about that certain culture presented in front of them.

Rebuilding Siargao Competition

Community Center + Urban Interventions 2022 by Archstorming - honorable mention

BURGOS TABO COMMUNITY CENTER

The Philippines experiences numerous typhoons throughout the year. “Resiliency” is romanticized during such hard times as communities can survive on their own, which should not be - Filipinos should know they deserve better. Resiliency should manifest in all forms: from the cooperation of stakeholders to the distribution of resources - a synchronized system to support the ones in need.

With such in mind, the new Community Center for the town of Burgos is designed for necessary activities for the community to prosper: a shelter, learning hub, market, and a safe space for discussions with the locals. The market is adjacent to karinderya, where the mutual connection of people, food, and mercantile comes hand in hand. The two spaces are vital during a calamity as these spaces will be used to receive relief aids and offer hot meals.

Various social spaces are in the project: a net lounge and kindergarten located at the funnel structure to utilize the unused space above, and a community area to conduct seminars, meetings, and other programs by the community. During low times, this space can act as a library. In connection to this, a clinic located across is vital during emergencies.

Designers added a seed bank for the preservation of native plant species. For an efficient inventory of supplies, the studio on the second floor offers a space for artists and project managers that opens to a balcony.

BURGOS LIFE SHED

Life Shed helps locals and tourists of Siargao in their daily routines: from being a transport shed to a resting area. Moreover, the energy from installed solar panels and water from deep well is collected to supply the community.

To assist during calamities, designers provided a platform on top of the shed for better clairvoyance of rescuers. As the shed is a pyramid in shape, its stability is best-suited for strong winds.
