SHARE YOUR LOVE OF THE NEW VIC THIS YEAR AND MAKE A DONATION TO GIFT A TICKET!
At the New Vic, we believe theatre should be as accessible as possible to everyone, and we’re doing everything we can to help remove barriers that might stop people experiencing great theatre.
But even with the work we’re doing, we know that for some, a visit to the theatre is still not possible without support.
And that’s where you can help!
Help us provide tickets and activities for members of the community who would otherwise not be able to attend the New Vic, by making a donation to our Gift A Ticket appeal.
A donation of any amount will support us to share the love of theatre with audience members who, without your help, would otherwise miss out on experiencing the joy of live theatre. Your donation could make a difference for someone experiencing disadvantage this Christmas.
Join our Gift A Ticket campaign and give someone an experience they’ll cherish forever this year!

Photography in this brochure by Andrew Billington, Jenny Harper, Malcolm Hart, David Hughes, Phil Radcliffe, Bridie Tyler and Natalie Willatt. It’s been such a joy to launch our new circus programme this summer.
In partnership with Upswing, it’s a programme that recognises our area’s unique role in circus heritage, by creating community and main stage productions, and delivering education and training.
We launched it with Astley’s Astounding Adventures, which told the story of the invention of circus by Philip Astley, a local hero who created a global phenomenon. We were blown away by your response, which was as spectacular as the show itself.
In the Potteries Centre, Upswing opened a circus hub, and at weekends we collaborated to present Circus Flavours, an opportunity to watch a circus performance then have a go. You might also have caught Circus Flavours on Smithfield, or in Bethesda Gardens during the Big Feast. If you missed saying hello, do take a look at Upwing’s new home next time you’re shopping in the Potteries Centre – it’s full of surprises!
We worked together to provide summer school activities, including an introduction to circus for looked-after children; and offered some valuable training opportunities for backstage professionals of the future, including an Observatory, where we invited circus professionals to watch and reflect on our work. Another backstage skills programme in collaboration with New Earth Theatre welcomed people who are interested in sound and lighting to come and experiment with the New Vic’s auditorium and technical equipment.
Looking ahead, our next circus adventure will be The Princess and The Pea, which we’re making with Upswing and London’s leading theatre for children, The Unicorn. It’s a retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s story, featuring a massive mattress tower (of course) and lots of circus, slapstick comedy and music.

Eric’s Pride and Prejudice
A musical comedy with a sensational 60s twist for Christmas!
Mon 27 November – Sat 9 December
As Christmas approaches, Mrs Bennett is more concerned than ever about marrying off her five daughters. Her husband, stricken with a stomach bug which keeps him out of her way for prolonged periods, holds many a conversation with his wife from the safety of the bathroom and agrees to a Grand Christmas Ball to which Mrs Bennett intends to invite every eligible male in the area, including a newcomer, Eric Arcy, who no-one has yet seen. He sounds the ideal match for her daughter, Elizabeth – but this is Eric!
Complicated relationships and the interference of Arcy’s two friends, Mr Bingley and Mr Bradford, make matters worse as the guest list turns out to be a little stranger than Mrs Bennett had first imagined.
A cast of considerable size, full of surprises and with some very special guests, David Graham Productions takes one of the most romantic stories of all time – and creates havoc with it! However, as with any Ericshaped makeover, Eric’s Pride and Prejudice is filled with sensational 60s songs, dancing, laughter and lots of fun - a great way to kick start your festive season!

Yizkor
Mon 22 January 7.30pm
Developed with the support of the Imperial War Museum Fellowship in Holocaust Education
As part of United Nations Holocaust Memorial Day 2024, New Vic Borderlines present YIZKOR.
‘The best play about the Holocaust that I have ever seen… accurate, moving, engaging and relevant’
Ruth-Anne Lenga, Institute of Education, Head of Holocaust Education Development Programme
YIZKOR follows the experiences of two teenagers, Ariella and Moshe, between May 1939 and May 1944. The play has been created using words written in letters and diaries, witness and survivor testimonies of teenagers during the Holocaust. Throughout the play the voices of Ibi and Waldemar Ginsburg are heard, two Holocaust survivors who worked with us to develop the play.
Set in a Shtetl in Eastern Europe, YIZKOR allows audiences an important insight into a way of life, a culture, a community that was all but wiped out as a result of the Holocaust.
Each performance will be introduced by Aida Haughton MBE, UN Translator and survivor of the Bosnian Genocide. Audiences are invited to participate in an interactive discussion following each performance and make their own ‘This Day’ pledge to stand up against prejudice, discrimination and hate.
Every audience member will receive an empty YIZKOR Passport typical of the era. They can use the information on the back to discover about individuals and communities affected by the Holocaust and add details to the passport. In this way they can acknowledge respect and remember.

Do I Love You?
Written and directed by John GodberTue 30 January – Sat 3 February
Join twenty somethings Sally, Nat and Kyle in this hilarious comedy as they develop a love for, and the people involved with, Northern Soul.
What started as a college project has grown into a passion, but the dance steps are exhausting. Far beyond their home city of Hull our trio find excitement, purpose and the tribe they’ve been looking for. Now they can’t get enough; from Brid Spa to Stoke, from Chesterfield to the Tower Ballroom our young soulies are determined to keep the faith!
This is Northern Soul for a new generation, but with rising costs, unemployment and small town blues, has anything really changed? Is this England 1973 or 2023? The pubs are closing, hospitality has gone, and strikes are everywhere; but when you’re out on the floor…
Spread the talc and grab your loafers, our trio are heading for a weekender!
Multi award-winning playwright John Godber has been a fan of Northern Soul since 1972. Here the author of the iconic Bouncers helps keep the faith with a nod to Frank Wilson!
Do I love you; indeed I do!

A Leap In The Dark
By Ron HutchinsonDirected by Gwenda Hughes
Fri 9 February – Sat 2 March
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the UK’s first ever radio play, this hilarious comedy caper charts the (almost) true story of how radio plays came to be.
Cedric Maud’s a man with a plan. He and his assistant Grace believe a play made specially for the wireless could be just the thing to entertain listeners and put the newly-formed BBC on the map.
With the broadcast date fast approaching, they ask an impresario with a reputation for producing ‘avant-garde’ theatre to direct the programme. He’s not sure how a play could work without a set and costumes and with the audience unable to see the actors, but he knows he’s not letting the job go to that upstart Noël Coward. So, supported by his wife’s unique brand of guidance, he sets to work.
Will they be able to find a writer willing to take the job? Will the actors be able to hold the listeners attention with only their voices? And how will audiences know what on earth is going on?
This fast-paced comedy caper sees eight actors take on a whole host of characters as we pay homage to the BBC and the invention of one of the most-loved artforms of the last century.

Yet one sunny day in the middle of all this, he suddenly suffered a brain seizure. This led to the discovery of a tumour the size of a cherry tomato, and a rather pressing need to undergo major neurosurgery. He doesn’t wish to make a big deal of it, but the experience has left him with a story to tell and a few things that he’d like to share with the room.
It’s a tale about surprise, fear, luck, love and qualified medical practitioners!

Next time you visit Newcastle-under-Lyme town centre, why not pop into Newcastle Common? Working with various artists in residence, Newcastle Common is a programme of work focused on transforming empty shops into places that inspire and entertain visitors with art and creativity! Each artist-in-residence will be looking to create brand new artwork inspired by our town and its vibrant history and residents are invited to visit the shop to get involved, see what’s in development and share conversations!
