The Marvellous show he’s made half its history, first visiting in 1993 when I was with us is very funny; a bit sad at times, silly at training to be a director. The New Vic Borderlines department works closely with individuals and communities to help people find new and positive ways to understand themselves, their communities and their responsibilities. Often this involves director Sue Moffat and the team working with people to help them tell their own stories in their own words; and helping their voices be heard by people who can make change happen. When Auschwitz survivors Val and Ibi Ginsberg told us their story - with such generosity, such insight, and such hope for the future - we knew we had to put it on stage. Yizkor gave audiences a powerful experience which we’ve shared with schools as part of our programmes to combat racial hatred and its consequences.

The title of the play refers to the three tunnels they covertly dug, which were codenamed Tom, Dick & Harry. We’re looking forward to seeing you at these and other events throughout our 60th year. Theresa Heskins Artistic Director

60 YEARS OF BUILDING

MAGICAL THEATRE A proud producing theatre, throughout 60 years of theatre-making, everything you see on stage at the New Vic has been thoughtfully crafted in North Staffordshire by some incredibly talented local people.

Originally, when the Victoria Theatre Company was based in Hartshill, the props were made at a workshop at what is now The Artisan Tap. Nowadays, everything is made just a few steps away from the auditorium itself. It wouldn’t be possible without many people, including our skilled Workshop team. There are many benefits to having them based in-house – not only is there a lovely family atmosphere, but it also means we can use more local suppliers, and solve problems more effectively. Head of workshop Laura said: “We’re very much a close-knit team. If a piece of set has got to have speakers or lights in it, we have all those teams around us in-house, so any problems are solved quickly. And you can take your time to think about a piece of set so that it is really smart and attractive.”

piano with an amp and sound outlets, and it had LED lighting for the fire. That was made possible by working on the set with the whole in-house technical and production teams.” Producing in-house means that the process can be more environmentally friendly as well. Chris said: “We’ve just taken Beauty and the Beast off stage; I’m now isolating items out of the floor that will then become parts of other sets because I know what’s coming up and therefore what to keep, and what we can recycle.” After initial meetings with the director of an upcoming show, either our Head of Workshop Laura or Head of Design Lis will get to work drawing up a design, with advice from the rest of the team. Then all the different departments at the theatre will be invited to a presentation where the vision is revealed – via either a model box of the theatre at 1:25 scale, or increasingly, digitally using 3D design software.

Master Carpenter Chris said: “Take the harpsichord in Beauty and the Beast, it was a practical

Laura said: “I try not to limit myself. When we staged Dracula, as a designer I could have done a full Victorian period set, but the design was very black and stylistic, with blood red silks. Anyone coming to see the show wouldn’t necessarily have thought the design would be that simple, but I think that design should surprise and challenge expectations.” The items that are needed in rehearsals are made first, and during this time, pieces of set and props may change as the cast and creative team on the show figure out what works. Typically, a show will have a three-week build period from start to finish, including floor painting in the last week of rehearsals. The build period for the Christmas production has a slightly longer process, due to the length of the show’s performance run and scale of the production. Laura said: “With the recent refurbishment of the auditorium, we had a whole new stage floor fitted. Before we were limited to what we could do with the stage for design because we only had a trapdoor section in the central area whereas now we can access the entire under-stage, which has opened up a whole new world of possibility for what we can build in the workshop.” Construction Assistant Dan added: “This is my first job outside of university other than doing a bit of freelance stuff. Working in-the-round definitely gives you a greater appreciation for having a trapdoor and a grid section above the stage that is flexible, so you can build from those aspects rather than just focusing on the front of the set as you would do in a proscenium arch theatre.” While our Workshop team have the benefit of being able to produce sets in-house, theatre-inthe-round does present other challenges.

you keep it really interesting – things come down from the sky or come up from the floor. There’s something nice about the fact the audience walk directly onto the floor, you have an ability to create quite an immersive environment. It’s very different from working in an ‘end-on’ theatre.” And in terms of favourite shows, it proves hard for the Workshop team to choose, but one stands out for Deputy Head of Workshop Melissa, who has been involved in building over 40 productions. Melissa said: “I really enjoyed working on The Borrowers because all of the props we got to make were huge! It was a really exciting time in workshop. The Christmas shows, when we get to do puppetry or where there is anything that involves solving problems creatively and inventively, are always memorable too.”

Scenic Artist Anna added: “It is amazing how designers think about sightlines and what happens on stage. Because you can’t bring anything huge on,

CLEANING AND VENTILATION Our air handling units ensure that we can circulate fresh air throughout the building and auditorium, and we are regularly monitoring the ventilation in all our spaces to protect our visitors and staff members. We are maintaining our high levels of cleanliness throughout the building before, during and after your visit, ensuring that all our spaces and contact surfaces are regularly sanitised. We have hand sanitiser stations situated throughout the building, free to use by all. You’ll see these available at our entrance, in our restaurant and outside our toilets. FEELING UNWELL? If you, or a member of your party, are exhibiting symptoms of Covid-19 prior to your visit, we politely ask that you do not attend the theatre. This might sound like a tall tale; one you won’t believe. It’s a tale filled with football stars, comedians and bishops; circus acts, budgies and politicians; mayors and a medal from Her Majesty. This is a story of a fantastical life. From the moment he was born, Neil knew he was destined to do wonderful things. And so that’s what he did. He joined a church choir then appeared on Songs of Praise; he hitchhiked across the country then became a famous clown; he went to see his local football team then became their kit man; he left school at 14 with no qualifications then received an honorary degree from Keele University. And he became a hero.

Love Hurts? Written and directed by Susan Moffat

Fri 18 & Sat 19 March Tickets £10.00 Concessions £6.00 Public performances will take place in the New Vic Studio. Fri 18 March 7.00pm Sat 19 March 2.00pm & 7.00pm

Love Hurts? is a powerful drama created through working with young people who have experienced harmful and damaging relationships. It sensitively and appropriately explores the nature of teenage relationships, the power dynamics which exist in all relationships, and challenges a culture where ‘love’ may be expressed through manipulation, exploitation and abuse. ‘In the background you could hear school bells and you could see text messages on the phone to her friends and we can sort of relate to it ‘cause we are in the same position.’ (young person’s response to Love Hurts?) Love Hurts? will be on a Community Tour from 18th March 2022. School and Colleges, Youth and Community groups can book workshops and performances of Love Hurts? Doris and George meet in 1951, a chance encounter in a Californian hotel that leads to a passionate one-night stand. Both are married to other people but, soon aware that this might be the start of something, they promise to meet 12 months later. So begins a romantic love affair that lasts 25 years. The play charts their lives through the ups and downs of parenthood, career highs and lows as well as the shifting fashions and morals of the passing decades. Bernard Slade paints a bittersweet, nostalgic and very funny portrait of two likeable protagonists who find themselves in the most unusual of long-term relationships. One of the world’s most widely staged plays, Same Time, Next Year was originally produced on Broadway in 1975. It ran for four years, winning a Tony Award for lead actress Ellen Burstyn, who later recreated her role in the successful film of the same title opposite Alan Alda. “Genuinely funny and genuinely romantic.” New York Post

Blow me a kiss from across the room, Say I look nice when I’m not, Brush my hair, as you pass my chair, Little things mean a lot … Jack and Liz are from another time! Lifelong lovers in an old fashioned marriage, Jack is a stoical, stubborn and truculent miner, Liz his effusive optimistic long-suffering wife. Between them they rub along, creating lasting memories and have an affection for each other which is as deep as the pit Jack works in. These were the halcyon years before the Miners’ Strike, but life was hard, money was scarce and everything was a struggle. In his very first play, written when he was 25, Godber captures life at the coal face, in the pit village, on the donkeys and by the fireside. The play aches with the ups and downs of ordinary family life - hilarious and touching, political and angry. Jack and Liz are a working class couple who don’t ask for much, and who are learning to live with what little they have. Featuring double BAFTA and multi award-winning couple, John Godber and Jane Thornton (Scary (Scary Bikers, Bikers, Shafted Shafted,, Sunny Side Up!) Up!) who present the play which brought them together over 40 years ago.

“I must have action! And if I cannot find it, I will make it.” Jane may be poor, obscure, plain and little, but that doesn’t mean she is without passion. Jane is clever and uncompromising, with no patience for those who don’t meet her own high standards. Jane has no respect for authority, but lives by her own strict moral code, no matter what the consequences. This witty and fleet-footed adaptation seeks to present Jane Eyre to a fresh audience while staying entirely true to the original’s revolutionary spirit. Using actor-musicians, playful multi-roling and a host of 19th century pop hits, this is an accessible new version of a literary masterpiece.

1943. A prisoner of war camp in Nazi occupied Europe. Above ground, is a prison impossible to escape. But below ground, the prisoners spy an opportunity. For these are not ordinary prisoners. Serial escapees, the prisoners held in Stalag Luft III begin an exhilarating game of cat and mouse with their captors. Hiding their covert activity in plain sight with gymnastic exercise, choir practice and cabbage growing (!), the men tunnel deep into the ground beneath the camp’s huts, and soon the most intricate, most audacious, greatest escape of them all is underway… Using top secret information from the war archives, classified until 1972, this brand new play will debunk the myths, honour the people involved and tell the true story of the most daring escape attempt in World War history! From the team that brought you Around The World In 80 Days, directed by Theresa Heskins (Olivier Award-winning The Worst Witch) and coproduced by the New Vic Theatre and Kenny Wax Productions (The Play That Goes Wrong, Six The Musical), Tom, Dick & Harry is filled with dynamic drama, humour and breath-taking theatricality, telling an extraordinary true story of solidarity across nations, and of an unbreakable spirit to achieve the impossible!

Help us to look to the future and continue the tradition of excellent creative work in our area by becoming a New Vic Patron. The New Vic is here thanks to the vision and commitment of the local community, making theatre and changing lives. We also now understand that art and culture have a wider, more measurable impact on our economy, health and wellbeing, society and education. The New Vic has seen and grown the value of this impact, and pre-pandemic we would reach over 25,000 people a year through community and education work; we will do that again, with your support. We want to go on reaching out to our community for the next 60 years. But we cannot do this without the ongoing support we receive from audience members, through the New Vic Patrons. Regular monthly donations from New Vic Patrons have made a huge difference for us during the past 2 years. We are still here today thanks, in no small terms, to the important part our Patrons play in the ecology of the New Vic. Now, in order to ensure a healthy future for the New Vic, we need to grow the number of Patrons who regularly support the theatre. Become a New Vic Patron and help us by giving monthly or annual donations that fund our creative work, as well as community and education projects. There has never been a better or more important time to join us.

Cult Figure: Kenneth Williams

Written and performed by Colin Elmer Directed by Tim Astley

Kenneth Williams was one of the most unique and beloved figures in British comedy history. With show stealing performances on the radio in Hancock’s Half Hour and Round the Horne and over 20 years of starring in the Carry On films, Williams was a rare talent who could combine broad slapstick and erudite wit in a split second. Celebrated actor and impressionist Colin Elmer, who played Kenneth Williams in the UK tours of Round the Horne and Hancock’s Half Hour, reprises his role in this hilarious and engaging production, telling the great man’s story in his own words, using anecdotes, writings and some of the material for which the comedy legend was so well-known.

Get stuck into arts and culture in Stoke-onTrent and Newcastleunder-Lyme! We were thrilled with the news that Arts Council has made Appetite one of its National Portfolio Organisations. We’ve already delivered exhibitions and workshops, and this year we continue to bring more exciting and engaging events and activities to our High Street and Astley Walk spaces, including library and performance spaces.

Offering an excellent choice of drinks, including draft lagers, beers, craft gins and non-alcoholic options, our Theatre Bar is open before and after the show. You can also order your interval drinks so they are ready and waiting for you. What’s more, our auditorium is fully-licensed so you can even take your drinks in to enjoy as you watch the performance.

Why not treat yourself to a pre-show meal? With a seasonally-themed menu for each new production, our Café is open for pre-show meals where you will always find a wide variety of choice to complement your evening with us. We recommend that you book in advance to guarantee a table which we will keep for you to use during the interval too! Book your table online via the Café page on our website, give our Catering Team a call on 01782 717954 Ext 325 or email catering@newvictheatre.org.uk Opening hours Café 10.00am – 3.00pm Pre-show meals From 5.30pm Theatre Bar 5.30pm – late
