Transformation
W
hether it’s an actor transforming in the dressing room by donning costume, wig and make up; or the change of scenery as the stage changes from one place into another, theatre is all about transformation. But when I first came to the New Vic, it was a more powerful transformation that most surprised me: the one we make in people’s lives. I’m incredibly proud of the way our education practitioners use theatre to develop learning and literacy in young people; the way our Appetite team works with local people to plan arts programmes for their communities; the way our Borderlines department invites disadvantaged and vulnerable people to use theatre and imagination as tools to change their own lives and build a better future. All of this is part of the charitable work of the New Vic. All our income, whether generated through our Box Office or from grants, donations and sponsorship, goes back into our work, enabling us to maintain these lifechanging programmes. We’re so grateful to organisations like The Denise Coates Foundation, whose

recent substantial donation will help us make a difference to the lives of local disadvantaged and vulnerable young people. Smaller donations make a huge difference too. For example, in enabling children who might not ordinarily get the chance to see our Christmas show. Some of you may remember how we asked you to donate to help us tour Around The World In 80 Days? It’s taken us a while, but that’s finally happening: after a short run here at the New Vic in summer, it will spend six months on a nationwide tour, giving us a chance to show the country that world-class theatre is made in Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire. Going Round The World Again
We chat to Michael Hugo about bringing Around The World In 80 Days back to the New Vic before embarking on a major national tour.

Life imitates art, or so the saying goes. Well, it certainly does for Michael Hugo and Andrew Pollard. The duo can regularly be found dashing from one mode of transport to another in scenes not too dissimilar from those of their Phileas Fogg and Passepartout counterparts in Around The World In 80 Days. Neither can drive, which makes getting to rehearsals quite the adventure indeed. “We have to go by train, tram, train and then taxi,” says Michael, who, like Andrew, hails from Todmorden. “I always arrive with a napkin on the end of a stick and he’s always got a full wardrobe with him so I invariably carry one of his suitcases. A couple of times we’ve got there just as the train was pulling away or the door had closed and Fogg’s famous calm would slip and he’d waggle his fist!” After hotfooting it straight from Cyrano rehearsals, Michael is wolfing down his lunch in the New Vic bar. In-between mouthfuls of a big breakfast he chats about bringing the actionpacked escapade back to the New Vic this summer, before setting off on a national tour with producers Simon Friend and Kenny Wax Family Entertainment.
Vic show is now being taken all around the country. “ It’s a really justifiable export from the New Vic. High quality, if I may say so myself, and clever and silly – when those two things get together everyone’s in for a lot of fun.” Talking about the first production of the show in 2013, Michael recalls the cast knew they were on to something special in the first few days of rehearsals. “As we were developing and creating ideas we started to realise it was something special,” he says: “As with a lot of Theresa’s (Heskins) shows it uses a very visual, filmic way of telling the story. The elephant materialising was a real turning point for us. “ It showcases all the different schools of theatre - clowning and street theatre and busking, all combined with really clever and beautiful narration. It’s a story kids and their grandparents can both love. Seeing people of all ages leaving the theatre trying the distance fighting and money throwing for themselves is always lovely.” “The gods of mischief are quite active in this play, be it the reactions to the song I start the second act with, or having fun with the sound operator operating the sound effects during the fight scenes.”
A regular since appearing in Kes in 2007, he’s taken flight as Peter Pan, got to grips with verbatim theatre in Where Have I Been All My Life? and discovered new worlds in The Borrowers. Of course, in the midst of all this there was also his starring role as an impromptu England goalkeeper in a Mars Bar advert.
Michael tells us every single role he’s had at the New Vic has been a highlight, with each giving him the opportunity to learn new skills. And on the subject of skills we finish our chat with the revelation that he’s now one step ahead of Andrew Pollard in the driving stakes – at the time of going to print, at least.
It’s clear that Around The World In 80 Days holds a very special place in his heart, as it does for audience members and theatre staff alike.
“We’re in a race at the moment. I’m just winning as I’ve got a provisional driving licence,” he says, laughing: “Andy needs to up his game a bit!”
“We are so excited to be telling this brilliant story again and looking forward to having a riot doing it and introducing it to new audiences on this tour,” he says: “There’s a real sense of pride that a New

Do you ever hear those pundits on radio and TV arts programmes, saying how they love to re-read particular books every couple of years? I do, and I always think ‘who has the time to read any book more than once? They must never go out and their houses must be filthy.’ I have to read a lot for work - plays, novels, research material - and between work, home, family and all my other hobbies and commitments I find very little time to read for pleasure. I’d go as far as to say that picking up a book that isn’t in some way connected to a project makes me feel slightly guilty - like eating sweets between meals. What joy then when Theresa Heskins asked me to adapt Anna of The Five Towns - a novel I had read (once) and loved. A legitimate excuse to indulge myself and spend a lot more time with a beautiful work of fiction. Guilt free calories. And what a book it is! I’ve adapted quite a few novels for the stage now and none has rewarded me more in close reading than Anna of The Five Towns. It’s relatively short (brevity is a great virtue in my view) but deeper and richer than many far lengthier books. It’s compact and lean and gets straight into the meat of the story, opening on a precipice - the eve of Anna’s 21st birthday. Having been emotionally neglected and bullied by her tyrannical, miserly father all her life, Anna is an elegant survivor – stoical, statuesque and inscrutable – but as the novel opens, she must pass into the adult world in more ways than one.

That world is the muscular industry and claustrophobic society of the Five Towns, in which Anna must negotiate new responsibilities and relationships. Most tantalisingly, it contains attractive and attentive men and the awakening of desire. We would call her an introvert, but that word does scant justice to Arnold Bennett’s complex creation. Anna is unknowable to the characters around her, yet, we the readers are privy to the inner turbulence beneath that sanguine exterior. Translating all this for the stage has been a privilege and an enormous challenge. In my opinion, Arnold Bennett was a truly great writer. I urge you to come and see our production – and then perhaps read (or re-read) his wonderful book. Deborah McAndrew

He is known for beautiful images of romantic places and at the Festival will talk about his new venture, a project in Stoke-on-Trent to capture the faces of The Potteries. 6pm LOYD GROSSMAN is a true polymath. Following a career in journalism he diverted into television and has written, presented and devised some of our best known programmes. New Vic Youth Theatre has turned back the clock to share the stories of one of Stokeon-Trent’s most iconic buildings. The teenagers interviewed members of the public about their memories of the Grade II listed Wedgwood Institute and then turned their tales into a series of creative monologues Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the project saw the group of 30 perform and film their pieces at the mid-19th Century building, which used to house Burslem Library, art classes and other community activities. It is hoped the film will now create a lasting record of the Institute’s history for future generations. The project saw the group receive training in oral history and film-making techniques to hone their skills prior to interviewing members of the public at a series of sessions. Kat Hughes, New Vic Youth Theatre Director, said: “We were delighted to receive the great news that we had won the funding and could get started on this project. “The project has allowed our young people to connect with their roots and lead on a cause
that is extremely important to them. They have received some top quality training and have really discovered their own heritage in ways that weren’t possible before.” Rohini Krishnadas said: “This project was so fun and I found I achieved many new skills and experiences that are so valuable while at the same I was able to search into the past, exploring the history of where I live - which was interesting as I didn’t realise I knew so little about such a beautiful building that is a major feature of Stoke.” Hannah Mason said: “The project has allowed me to take part in and discover so many things that I thought I never would. I never knew one building could be so fascinating and contain so many different stories. Being a part of this has meant that I have learned lots of new and interesting skills that will stick with me, and it has also given me knowledge about my local area that I will always remember.” Maisy Cartlidge said: “Working on this project has given me the opportunity to learn a lot about local history and about the building. It was very interesting and fun, I’ve gained skills which will stay with me for life. Founded in 2001 by Artistic Director Rachael Lines (a dancer and choreographer) and Michael King, FRONTLINEdance was formed to create a more visible culturally diverse society that positively celebrates disability and older age. Ensuring that the same access and progression routes into dance exist for disabled children and young people, as for their non-disabled peers, the company work with all ages and abilities aged from three to 103. The company create work that engages with individuals and audiences in a diverse range of settings and environments.
“This partnership will help us raise the profile of what we do, allowing more people to engage with us as participants and audiences. The office and management team at the New Vic will support our organisational development and our project plans for 2017. We are excited to work with the Borderlines team on social impact projects too.”

Help us to beat the literacy gap …little by little Jess is three years old and is cared for by her grandmother Margaret. Margaret is doing her very best, but life is hard. Sadly in our community nearly 40% of small children exhibit significant speech and language delay by the time they start school. The New Vic have set out to help inspire a love of reading and storytelling with literacy workshops led by our Education team. But we need your support to continue this work. Jess and Margaret are a family we’ve been able to work with through the Children’s Centre they attend. Our free workshops are designed to develop a love of songs, storytelling and word games in very young children. For parents and carers the sessions provide activities that can be easily replicated at home to encourage the development of small children’s literacy skills. “I have enjoyed watching and learning how the children develop their imagination through the medium of stories and language.” Children’s Centre worker.
