NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS New Years is a time when people around the world make promises. However, many of the promises made are not fulfilled. I plan to keep my New Year’s resolutions through the year. I plan to work hard and improve my grade. I am working hard to achieve my goal. I have chalked out plans, made time table for self study and have promised myself to devote more time to practice formulae, diagram and read the lessons regularly. I have also promised myself to help my mother in her daily household chores. I would be setting up the table for dinner and help my Mom to clear the table after the supper.

A New Year’s resolution is a promise that you make to yourself to start doing something good or stop doing something bad on the first day of the year My resolution for 2013 to eat healthier. I will eat fruits and vegetables every day while limiting my junk intakes. After all, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. I will also drink more water and milk while drinking less soda and juice will be health conscious as a healthy mind resides in a healthy body. I will limit the time I spend watching television and playing computer games to one hour per day. I did not fare well in the Unit Tests as I spent a lot of time on TV and computer. Now I have learnt a lesson and have promised to work harder in studies and improve my grades in the next Formative Assessments. Vanshit Chaprana- VI Achievers

The turning of the calendar is an important time for children to focus on forming good new habits. Of late, I go through a lot of emotional pangs. I get disturbed easily and am not able to focus on studies. Though I am doing extremely well in Chess and have played at the Nationals, yet I feel I can do much better in my academics. I have hence made a resolution for my self. When I feel angry or stressed out, I will take a break and find constructive ways to deal with the stress, such as exercising, reading, writing in a journal or discussing my problem with a parent or friend. I hope this will ensure that I keep myself motivated at all times and ward off any negativity around myself. Hassi Chhikara-VIII Sushruta

MRIS Noida

NOSTALGIA @ MRIS NOIDA Parents recount, relate and reminisce their wonderful experiences which they have experienced through their children at MRIS Noida

I

t gives me immense pleasure to share my feelings about MRIS Noida for the ‘Reporter’ magazine. I feel fortunate and proud to be a part of the school where my daughter Aahana Durge is studying and getting nurtured and groomed to attain the best level form of education in all aspects. She has not only gained more confidence but her overall personality has improved a lot. I can see the change in her knowledge and learning levels by participating in various events, competitions and assemblies held on a regular basis. The credit goes to all the teachers and Principal Ma’am who are contributing wholeheartedly towards the development of all students, by not only teaching them but also comforting, encouraging and grooming them. I hope my child goes a long way in the path of success with hands in hand with MRIS Noida. Parent of Aahana Durge, Grade 4

T

he children spend a large portion of their day at school so it’s really essential that apart from academics other life skills such as teamwork, good manners, sharing and responsibility are also imbibed in them to make good future citizens. I got my kids admitted to MRIS, Noida and would like to share my views about the school. At Manav Rachna the curriculum throughout different grades is based on activity based learning which encourages the kids to keep trying and also make them solution seekers and analytical thinkers. From early years, the children are exposed to different nationalities, cultures and traditions, helping them to shape their viewpoint of the world around them. In school my children learnt about healthy relationships, compassion, respect, empathy and sensitivity towards the needy through class room interactions and visits to different places. The school exposes the children to multitude of opportunities which give them a taste of what could await them in future. Parent of Arshiya, Grade 2

I

t takes me down the memory lane as I write this article about my experience with “Manav Rachana International School” Noida ..to the days we were looking out for a new school for our kids. We shortlisted Manav Rachana International School, Noida due to its close proximity and of course that it has a brand of its own. To be very honest I was a frantic mother (like any other mom would be) and had lots of apprehensions as a new school would have its own teething issues. But as days passed by I started to realize that all my worries could be put to rest. The teachers here are extremely warm and compassionate and above all “accessible” at any time of the day. They demonstrate a sincere commitment towards teaching. Students and teachers share a great rapport and it is these perfect blends of qualities that can have a lasting impact on kids. They implement a variety of techniques that enhance the quality of teaching and thereby encouraging the kids to think out of the box. I can see my kids reaping the benefits of Paragon learning. They learn so much about the different cultures across continents and the best part is that they are able to assimilate and retain so much information at such a tender age. This just proves how effective the Paragon tool is. My kids have blossomed into confident individuals and all credit goes out to their teachers. Manav Rachana International School , Noida is an epitome of “new generation education” and lives up to being the playground of education.

The class room is decorated with children’s original art works, their own writing. Children have access to various activities such as block building, picture books, paints &other art materials and table toys, legos, puzzles. The teachers at MRIS serve with passion. They are able to understand parent’s needs and concerns to deliver what is expected. I am happy and proud that MRIS is my son’s education world!! Parent of Dhananjay, KG Class

It gives equal opportunity to all children to express their creativity and helps in their multi dimensional growth and build their skills. MRIS has the best faculty and quality education. The entire curriculum is done through fun way of learning which helps the child in grasping the things faster, the best example is PARAGON. We are quite satisfied with the teaching staff and the management of the school who are always there to help our child in the best possible manner. Parent of Shashwat Khanna , Grade 3

I believe at this stage, children possess an innate curiosity. MY KID’S TEACHER AT MANAV RACHNA INTERNATION SCHOOL “Great teacher do not teach, they care about students…”, this is what that comes to my mind first when I think about Kanu Ma’am — my kid’s class teacher. Amongst all the memories and learning lessons, days that we spent at school are the most impacting ones and hence it becomes very important to have a good school and above all — a good teacher.

MRIS Noida The word ‘teacher’ implies the flow of knowledge and skills from one person to another. A good teacher will keep the students wanting to come to school just to see what interesting things they will explore and discover each day. Good teachers know the content and know how to explain it. Good teachers expect and demand high levels of performance of students. Good teachers are great performers and storytellers that rivet their students’ attention. All of this is good but great teachers engineer learning experiences that maneuver the students into the driver’s seat and then the teachers get out of the way. Students learn best by personally experiencing learning that is physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual. My child has become more confident, more interactive and more competitive after she joined MRIS. I found all qualities of a great teacher in Kanu Ma’am and I can proudly say that I made one of the good decisions in my life by selecting MRIS as the brand gave me an assurance of seat back, relax and enjoy your child growing up. Thank you Kanu Ma’am and thank you MRIS. OFF TO SCHOOL I wake up, get ready and hop to school every day, my Mom leaves me at the reception saying have a good day ! Ms. Disha walks me to the class with a smile on her face, From the class door I thank her for leaving at the place. Ms. Geeta and my friends welcome me to the class, saying come on Vaanya let us have a blast. We learn, we play, get a break and eat lunch, We gather all together and go outside as a bunch. I make pretty lanterns and snow flakes while sitting down, We all enjoy learning about civilizations, renaissance et al in paragon. Learning letters, words, maths and activities are all so much fun, Until it is time when Mom comes to get me back in the sun. Written by Vaanya’s parents with the help of Vaanya. “The Sun was high, the stars were high, I was sitting on the chair and looking at the sky. First take a pretty rose and go outside, if you want to play on the swing, say bye bye..” Narrated solely by Vaanya. SCHOOL AS HER SECOND HOME We never realized why people used to say that school is the second home for a kid. When I was young in school, I thought that it was because we spent good enough time in school. But with Shubhangi’s school time, we came to realize that it is not just because of the amount of time she spends in school, but it is more because of quality of that time and the environment she gets at MRIS Noida. A child can best grow in the environment which impresses her, which makes her feel home and which provides her the confidence that she is with the people who will care for her. Now, when we look at school as the second home for Shubhangi, MRIS Noida fits in well. Let those be physical activities, be mental exercises or attitude development activities, the school has put all efforts to make sure that kids are going through an overall grooming. The school environment is very influencing to her and she picks up most of the behavior from school. School staff, not limited to the class staff, makes sure that each child feels special and motivated. We are happy to know that kids, as young as two years, are participating in all activities which the parents feel proud of. Sometimes, many developments in Shubhangi’s

9

behavior/learning come in as surprise to us as well. It has been a great time for Shubhangi, and for us. We now know why MRIS Noida is second home to her. Waking up in the mornings she is excited that she has to go to school which is a second home to her and is full of fun and surprises! KG ASSEMBLY — PARAGON UNIT 6

Paragon Assembly unit VI at MRIS 21C

It was Paragon Assembly Time again at MRIS 21C Faridabad on 20-12-13. The day started with the smiling faces of the children, looking fresh and confident for their ‘Unit 6 Paragon Assembly’. Unit 6 addressed the Essential Question ‘Why do people create art?’. BALI, a tropical island, was the focus of Unit 6 and has been an adventurous ride. The children were dressed in ‘Sarongs’ and wore lovely ‘Headdresses’, which they created in their respective centers, during their Paragon activity sessions. We are all proud of them, as their memory map besides INDIA, comprises of many countries, their histories, the people, the art and culture. Students learnt about four types of art - Dance, Music, Theater and Visual Art as part of Unit 6 and they are now aware about how people use art to express ideas, emotions and create beauty. They can also compare how we live and create art to how people in BALI do. They were really excited to share what they had learnt through the past month and also sang a medley of rhymes on the ongoing GES Theme ‘Flowers and Plants’. The assembly ended by wishing a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year by way of a song.

WE LOVE YOU DEAR CHILDREN

“Nobody is a perfect parent, we all are learning effective parenting. Few Common Behavioral Issues in today’s children and the ways to deal with them” DEALING WITH TEMPER TANTRUMS Tantrums are a way for your child to “vent” feelings that are becoming overwhelming for them to be able to handle. Few Suggestions for handling Tantrums are DIVERSION — Even if you think a tantrum is about to explode, there is often time to divert your child attention. Quickly introduce a new toy or point out something that is happening for your child to see. Simply saying ‘can you hear that?’ — ‘look at that on top of the tree’ can work well in diverting your child’s attention. SPOTTING A PATTERN — If your child has a lot of tantrums, it’s a good idea to keep a record of them. When you record your child’s tantrums, consider what the situation was just before the tantrum started. By doing this you can see how the tantrum develops and try to stop it. For example, if your child throws a tantrum while you are preparing dinner, offer your child an activity they could do in the meantime or ask your child to help you out. INCULCATING DISCIPLINE— When it comes to discipline it is by trial and error until you figure out what works for you and your child. It is also important to remember to be consistent.

FEW DISCIPLINE METHODS WHICH CAN BE FOLLOWED ARE VERBAL AND NON-VERBAL EXPRESSION OF DISAPPROVAL—It is important when using this method, to combine it with positive instructions on appropriate behavior. For example, “stop running inside the house, you need to walk inside the house so you don’t break anything and you don’t hurt yourself ”. DELAYING PRIVILEGES — This is another effective method you can use with your child. You can delay things that your child likes until the other tasks are completed. For example, your child may like playing with Lego. You (the parent) can lay down the pre-condition saying that you will allow them to play with the Lego once they have picked up their toys off the floor in the bedroom. TIME OUT —When using this technique it is very important to be consistent in order for this technique to be a success. If your child is consistently misbehaving (after receiving a warning) then you should firmly lead your child to a “time out spot” and they should remain there (only for a couple of minutes GIVING CHOICES — It’s vital not to give your child too many choices. If you ask your child whether they would like something to eat, whether to get dressed, what clothes they would like to wear etc, you are more than likely asking for trouble because a natural instinct of your child is to say “no”. Then you will be spending your time arguing, trying to persuade your child

12

and in the end making your child do what was necessary in the first place anyhow. So it is best not to offer your child a choice in the first place, in the form of a question. Rather limit your child’s choices between two. For example, “would you like to go to the park now or in the afternoon after your nap?”, “would you like to wear your red dress or the blue one”. Anger Management in Children All children deal with anger on a daily basis. Thinking about it as a child, there is a lot to be angry about. Elder people telling them what to do, not being allowed to get what they want, they fail at many things they try, it’s frustrating at times. As an adult we are able to deal with these setbacks in a social acceptable way, however a child doesn’t have the ability or the understanding to deal with their actions when they become angry, in an acceptable way. Anger is an emotion. It usually presents itself, in response to danger. It is also a form of self expression and for a child sometimes it’s a way of becoming independent. DEALING WITH ANGER BE CALM - The first thing you need to do is stay calm when your child loses control of their anger.Your child will be watching with how you deal with the situation. When you are calm and relaxed when handling the situation, your child will also begin to calm down easily. STOP THE CAUSE OF ANGER— It’s important to separate your child from the person they feel like hurting, so make sure you get them away from each other. Toys and situations can also be the cause of anger with children. Just remember, there is no point discussing the causes that led up to the outburst of anger with your child at this point.Your child will still be dealing with their emotions and trying to calm down should be the first thing. After some time when your child has reached their normal level, you can discuss what happened and what caused the feelings of anger in the first place. As an adult when you are feeling angry, the last thing you want is someone coming to you and shouting at you for what you did.Remember Every child is different what works for one child, might not work for the other one”. One thing you can always have in your heart and mind while dealing with your children “Empathy”.

What the students from MRIS-46 had to say: “Ma’am Sonu Kumar was very naughty but very intelligent.” “We would like to come here again.” “Let’s call them for a tour to our school.” This was a very enriching experience for us and we hope we get more such opportunities as this widens our perspective and vision towards life.

VISIT TO A FARM HOUSE

F

ield trips are important because it gives hands on experience to students. Also, travelling gives them a chance to see different places and learn new things up close and personal. MRIS NOIDA always believes that learning should not be restricted within the four walls. Students of Grade nursery KG and Ist of MRIS NOIDA had an opportunity to visit a farmhouse. Observing different vegetables growing at the farmhouse was a learning experience . It was exciting

been received. The application may be installed on one’s mobile phone by logging on to Google Play Store (https://play.google.com/store?hl=en‎). Introducing such a tool is a ‘leap’ which the city police has taken, considering that it will provide much- needed help to women who often feel unsafe in public places. The initiative also throws light on how technology may be put to superior uses, not only for social networking, but also for societal good.

for the small students to see some vegetables grow above earth and some of them grow underground. The students saw oranges, lemon, brinjal growing and they also visited the spinach field. The students also enjoyed plucking oranges from trees. The visit was a nature walk clubbed with games, entertainment and good food. The teachers and students returned to school with happy memories to treasure.

HANDS-ON AT EASY DAY Keeping in mind the current on going theme, “It’s Yummy”, the toddler children of MRIS-46 were taken to Easy Day to get a hands on experience of buying pulses, fruits and vegetables. Healthy eating habits were also encouraged as the children looked around.

JOY OF GIVING

I

t’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.” — Mother Teresa ‘Is Diwali par aap kiseko khush kar rahe hain’ (Whom are you going to make happy this Diwali?). With this aim in our minds, we MRIS-51 planned ‘Joy of Giving’ Day on 31st October’ 13. Diwali definitely brightens our lives but our target was to make the festival of lights equally brighter for other people too. Students of MRIS-51 visited two NGOs; DISHA AND SANKALP in Gurgaon today. Grade 4 visited Disha foundation school, Malibu Towne and Grade 5-6 went to Sankalp, Galleria. The purpose of this visit was to sensitize them towards the less privileged children and also to donate dry eatables, toiletries, juices etc. These centres were not just a place of teaching the under-privileged children but also a warm, loving home of hundreds of people who lived there. Surely as children walked out of those big gates, they knew that something had changed in all of them—the way they saw things in general, the way they looked at others and most of all the way they looked at themselves.

SHINING BEACON

Manav Rachna International University presented HT Shine HR Conclave--The NCR Chapter

T

he economy which is in a state of flux has ushered in a fresh set of challenges to the corporate sector in terms of managing expectations of the new generation workforce. Adapting to Generation Y and recognizing their needs and aspirations were just some of the issues discussed at the Manav Rachna International University-presented HT Shine HR Conclave—The NCR Chapter. Held at Taj Vivanta, Gurgaon, on 19 December, 2013, the HT Shine HR Conclave brought to the dais, a body of corporate experts to generate a meaningful dialogue on the current HR practices and issues so as to explore solutions for them. The Conclave, attended by over 200 senior HR executives, involved a panel discussion where the aim was to look at how HR can get the edge on capability to deliver to organizational expectations of today. Based on the theme ‘Building HR for Business Growth’, the Conclave had as its key speakers Ajay Kukreja (Country HR Director, Honey well India), Arun Sehgal (Executive VP—HR, GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare), Prithvi Shergill (CHRO, HCL Technologies) and Sandeep Banerjee (Director—HR, Taj Hotels, Resorts and Palaces— Vivanta by Taj Hotels and Resorts). Stalwarts from MRIU, most notably Col. (Retd) V.K. Gaur (Advisor, Manav Rachna Educational Institutions), Major General A.S. Bakshi, AVSM (Retd) (Director, Corporate Resource Management), Professor Suresh Bedi (Director, Centre for Continuing & Distance Ed-

ucation and Director Quality Assurance), Dr Chavi Bhargava (Director, Faculty of Management Sciences), Mr Atul Kalra (Registrar, PR & Admin.), Ms Hitankshi Thukral (Deputy Director, Corporate Communication), among others, also attended the Conclave to share their thoughts with the industry leaders. Professor Suresh Bedi who delivered the introductory address set the tone for the Conclave by highlighting a number of contemporary HR issues concerning both the corporate and academic world. The issues raised related to performance, mapping, retention and development of HR. Additionally, development of leadership, reward management and gender concerns particularly relating to sexual harassment of women was discussed at the meet. Attention was also drawn to the mechanisms that can be evolved to measure and manage return on investment in HR. Professionals concurred on the fact that all HR functions must strive to make an organization lean, mean, green, gender sensitive and socially responsive. Given the current corporate scenario, employee satisfaction was given a lot of weightage. HR professionals were also expected to use social media to be in touch with their employees. As stated by Amit Malik, Director HR, Aviva Life Insurance India Ltd, “Recognition excites Gen Y.” Since the millennial workforce are hungry for interaction and thirsty for acknowledgment, so commenting on their progress--through texting, tweeting and posting updates on social networking sites--makes them feel they are working with a purpose. The Conclave also highlighted the fact that employers these days have to come to terms with the fact that Generation Y will

16

only meet their goals if they are given the flexibility to work their way to the desired results. According to Sandeep Banerjee, Director- HR, Taj Hotels, Resorts & Places, we should create platforms for Gen Y to let them grow step by step. The HR Meet also focused upon the need for multi-skilling of employees as an absolute must to sustain growth and meet new challenges. A pan India survey on employee multi skilling conducted by MRIU and HT Shine earlier in the month came up with some interesting findings. It was found that today’s young executives wanted to go in for management programmes, where, in addition to domain knowledge improvement, they expected flexible and online delivery at affordable cost. What made the HR Conclave even more significant to MRIU was the fact it marked the launch of its Executive MBA programme which has been introduced keeping in mind the quality needs and concerns of the prospective executives. Its key differentiators include innovative pedagogy, course flexibility, participant-centric approach, case method of teaching and global immersion in an active learning environment marked by high degree collegiality and vibrant campus life. By examining Generation Y’s mindsets and expectations, the Conclave was able to redefine the changing profile of today’s HR executives where they are expected to not only manage people but also look deeper into business strategies. The Conclave ended with MRIU dignitaries engaging in an informal interaction with top notch HR leaders to share and exchange information on today’s business environment and HR related issues.

Career Counseling

MEETING AT CROSSROADS A two day National Symposium on Higher Education (NSHE) was organized jointly by ICTRC and DPS, Sector 45 (Gurgaon). Manav Rachna International University actively participated in career counseling almost 2,000 students. Guidance was given to teenagers to explore different career options and make important career decisions

M

anav Rachna’s mission of creating better human beings has found expression through various avenues. Be it through regular workshops, Campus Walk Through Activities, symposiums or career counseling sessions, Manav Rachna International University (MRIU) believes in guiding students who are at the crossroads of their careers. Just when they are on the verge of leaving school, Manav Rachna International University gives them a helping hand, ensuring a smooth transition from school to the real world. In recent years, the higher education landscape of the country has grown by leaps and bounds, and with it, the choice of careers and course options. Students at the High School level are therefore often confused about their aspirations and goals. They may watch their parents and peer groups but are still like children who are lost in the woods. Caught in the quagmire of dreams and reality, they move blindly from pillar to post. Faced with numerous career options, they keep floundering, lacking in purpose, vision and goal. A timely intervention at this juncture is a must to help them to act and think fast and lay out what should ideally be a robust career plan. Thus we at Manav Rachna, have taken the initiative to help aspiring young professionals to realize their dreams by reaching out to them through our team of highly skilled experts. While schools as well as parents do their best to help students through informal career counseling, the fact remains there are far too many myths and misconceptions associated with career counseling as a process. Contrary to what a large section of schools and parents might think, providing career information is not the same as providing career counseling. Career counseling is also not just dissemination of information but a scientific process of helping the student in knowing himself

and making him capable of decision making in the career of his choice. And that is where Manav Rachna International University has been a beacon of hope and a guiding light for the students. Its workshops help students get the true picture and look reality in the eye: they realize that the road to success is not easy but it can also be quite challenging with opportunities galore. At the two day National Symposium on Higher Education (NSHE) organized jointly by ICTRC and DPS, Sector 45 (Gurgaon) on November 12 and 13, 2013 at DPS, Sector 45, Gurgaon, for instance, MRIU’s participation helped increase confidence levels among the students. On the first day of the Symposium, Professor I.K. Kilam (Dean, Students Welfare, MRIU) addressed the students of Grades XI and XII on charting their careers based on a diverse selection of courses and careers. The Second Day–November 13, 2013—witnessed Dr Anil Sarin (Professor and Dean, Faculty of International Programmes, MRIU), delivering a lecture on time management. Ms Hitankshi Thukral (Deputy Director, Corporate Communications) held a workshop where she interacted with high school students and gave them invaluable insights into MRIU’s different course offerings in both the engineering and non-engineering fields. A one-on one counseling session was organized through stalls that were put by MRIU at the venue. No less than 1800 students came to visit the stalls which were effectively managed by Admission Counsellors who provided unbiased and authentic information on the latest choices in careers and courses. They helped students to explore different career options and make informed decisions and choices. There was much enthusiasm and excitement among the students who came from schools both far and near. rence Road, G.D. Goenka-Dwarka, Bluebells School, Holy Child School-West Delhi and Army Public Schools were all there to reap the rich benefits of the Symposium. Since MRIU has been consistent in its efforts at guiding students, it undertook a similar initiative at DPS-Maruti Kunj where Col (Retd) V.K. Gaur (Advisor, Manav Rachna Educational Institutions) addressed the students on how to choose the right career once they embark on a journey into the unknown. No student-centric initiative would ever be complete without lauding and acknowledging the tireless efforts of MRIU’s highly qualified trainers who have time and again conducted workshops at different schools in UP, Delhi, Haryana, Nepal and Bhutan and addressed issues related to time and stress management, communication and soft skills. Through every workshop and every symposium, MRIU has played a pivotal role in dispelling students’ doubts and confusions, providing sound and impartial advice on what would best suit their interests and aspirations. Social Media

DEMYSTIFYING SOCIAL MEDIA • WHAT IS SOCIAL MEDIA ?? Social media refers to a group of Internet-based applications that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content. It depends on mobile and web-based technologies to create highly interactive platforms through which individuals and communities share, co-create, discuss, and modify user-generated content. It constitutes highly interactive platforms on web and mobile phones, through which students share, discuss, co-create and modify user generated content. Eg.Youtube, Facebook,Twitter etc. • ITS INFLUENCE: Social Web technologies have a huge influence on student’s life. Its no longer a part of their life, “Its Their life now ”!! The biggest challenge we are facing today is the changing behavior of school students. This is affecting Student-Teacher and student-Parent relationship. Whether we like or not, the technology has played a major role in bringing this change. Our students “Digital Natives” have never known a world without internet. Their online lives are crucial to their identity and understanding of the world. • THE CONCERN : The students are better than most of the teachers and parents when it comes to using these technological platforms. However that doesn’t mean they display the social and ethical responsibility required to have positive online experiences. They lie on their beds and study while listening mp3, at the same time texting and chatting online with friends, reading and posting face book messages. I’m amazed at their multitasking abilities. How multitalented our kids are!! But my concern is, they are very poor in Life Skills, and are more bothered about the Virtual world. They are becoming less sensitive, less empathetic. They are physically present, but mind keeps wandering and they want to be “Stay Connected”. High dimensional graphical illustrations, short span fads, tech trends generally attract kids and most of the time they try to fit their personality in accordance with these fads & trends.

• Internet safety: How to handle photos, videos, graphics Students do not understand sometimes sharing personal information leads to crimes, theft, identity crisis and it becomes public. • WHY ARE STUDENTS MORE VULNERABLE? # Adolescent age: It’s a time of curiosity, experimentation, exploration, testing the boundaries and at the same time formation of Self-identity and self worth. The most important relationship is the “friends/ best friend”. Online friends are often trusted completely. Caring attitude of adults is often misunderstood and they are considered to be “ignorant / backward”. Friends have major role in their lives and major impact on their behavior, and self esteem. At times students are not able to confide and share their feelings, concerns

STUDENTS DO NOT UNDERSTAND: • Privacy and personal boundaries in friendships and deeper relationships • What constitutes bullying behavior (Cyber bullying) and how to handle it ? • Posted/online comments affects a person’s reputation • Sharing Information: what to share and how to share

neither with busy parents nor with teachers. Absence of Filters: Social media is 24 x 7 available and has no filters. Today information is easily available. Scope of this is unlimited. Thus in absence of caring adult and sensible guide, students become vulnerable to all kind of influences. This has a detrimental effect on their studies, mental and physical well being. # Less Physical Activity: Research has proved that concentration in studies can be enhanced by doing lots of physical exercises. By sweating and burning more calories, you can be mentally and physically fit. A healthy mind resides in a healthy body. • OUR ROLE : We should shift focus of students towards responsible and positive use of Social media. We must empower our students to learn deeply and sensible use of these tools. We cannot let go the opportunity they have and can’t stop them. Our effort in this challenge is to figure out how to help students “create, navigate, innovate and grow the powerful individualized networks of learning” that bloom on the web and guide them to use this “effectively, ethically, sensibly, and safely”. We must create and follow social media guidelines for students, for eg: how to use it for peer learning, to create school team, working for social causes, professional development by connecting with other countries, advising and engaging them according to their interest.

Apart from these explorers, the students also spoke about the great thinkers and inventors whom they learnt about enroute their Paragon journey like Gutenberg, Copernicus, Galileo and because of their contribution we have been able to see the modern world. Paragon’s content rich curriculum is multicultural, engaging, student centered and inter-disciplinary. This aspect was well depicted when students presented what all they have learnt in English, Hindi, Math and GES as well. The assembly culminated with celebration of the forthcoming biggest Hindu festival of Diwali. A English Story Narration Competition

S

tories have always excited children since times long gone. They are used to listening to stories and fairy tales from their grand parents and parents. But what if the roles are reversed and the little ones became story tellers themselves? At the English Story Narration Competition held at MRIS 21C in December, KG children had just a surprise in store. It was fun to watch the little ones coming to school dressed up in a variety of costumes ranging from a tree, a prince, an elf, a milkman...the list is unending. The children had come well-prepared with their props and confidently narrated their stories. It was heartening to see the KG children narrating stories with such flair and poise, using their props wherever required. We congratulate the children and their parents for having put in such brilliant efforts and making this competition such a roaring success. The competition was significant for more reasons than one. It was a great confidence-building exercise for the children and opened the doors to their imagination. If child experts are to be believed, stories have the power to change children’s minds. By narrating a story, children are able to recreate a world where their imagination is given a free rein. The Competition helped the children to undertake an exciting journey into the unknown and talk about people and places that are far away from home. The story telling session also helped parents and children to bond better as they worked towards building the story bit by bit. What’s more, the Competition gave children the perfect opportunity to give vent to their thoughts, emotions, creativity, and language skills.

T

he conference was held on October 18, 2013. Speaking at the conference in Chandigrh,, distinguished leaders from the Education sector and Corporate Sector spoke about the contribution of private sector institutions in the development of the industrial sector. They all agreed that the Government(s) should encourage the private sector educational institutions and encourage Public- PrivatePartnership. Almost 180 Institutions participated in the meeting and they were addressed by the following dignitries: Dr. G. Viswanathan, President, EPSI, Dr. H. Chaturvedi, Alternate President, EPSI, and Mr. Prashant Bhalla, Treasurer, EPSI . Inaugurating the conference, Shri Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Haryana, said that Northern States have seen a big leap in Private Self Financing Professional and Vocational Institutions in the last 15 years and have also made a reasonably good progress in industrial development. He also pointed out, that Haryana in particular had done exceedingly well in both the sectors in the last one decade. He emphasized that time has come when both the sectors are required to compliment each other by sharing knowledge base and resources. Industry is the largest employer of students who pass out from educational institutions. The Chief Minister emphasized that his Government would make all efforts to increase industry academia interaction. He also applauded the efforts of Education Promotion Society for India for their commendable work. Dr. G Viswanathan, President, EPSI and founder of VIT University said, “While government dismantled the License & Permit Raj for the industry in 1991, the same continues in the education sector. courage more private investment to be made in Universities & Colleges. He mentioned that private sector has contributed immensely towards increasing GER. However, to leap from the current 12% to 25%, a lot of private sector role is envisaged. Government must facilitate rather than obstruct the growth of private sector. Mr. V. Ramaswamy, Global Head, Small & Medium Business, Tata Consultancy Services in his speech said that Indian Education System had seen a huge transformation from gurukul centric system in ancient India to modern day technology driven institutions. He said that educational institutions traditionally have been knowledge centric and have nurtured talent in this direction, whereas the industry has been skill-centric and has its processes revolv-

ing around skill at the work force. The time has come to plug this gap by more and more interaction at all levels. He observed that some of the institutions in India have leveraged technology to make improvement in the quality of teaching learning process but this aspect needs to be proliferated in a big way. He appreciated the efforts of EPSI in bridging the gap between industry and academia. Dr. Chaturvedi emphasized, “Indian Higher education sector has played an important role in developing demographic dividend of India. But, to move forward, we need to have cooperative environment from the policy makers.” Government must facilitate rather than obstruct the growth of private sector. We need to ensure a positive climate for growth of education sector. Self regulation is also a power tool. He

further said, “EPSI and Private sector institutes have tried to reason out with the government, but the regulators have been snubbed repeatedly. He also requested that Government should open up the education sector, rather than over regulate the sector with draconian laws. If education system has to flourish in India, increasing competition is the only answer.” Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Prashant Bhalla, Chancellor, Manav Rachna International University and Treasurer, EPSI put forward his valuable thoughts and said: The topic of the theme has been chosen

carefully by EPSI looking at the growth and development of Industry output in Northern India in general and Haryana in particular in last decade under the stewardship of Ch Bhupinder Singh Hooda in Haryana. Private Sector Educational Institutions have taken the onerous responsibility of providing access, equity and quality in Education, supplementing the efforts of the Government. In past two decades, Northern States attracted huge capital investment in academic infrastructure in professional courses including Engineering & Technology, Medicine, Dental Sciences, Allied Health Sciences, Management and Computer Application etc with Haryana taking the lead. Dr. O.P. Bhalla, founder visionary, Manav Rachna Vidyantariksha established first self financing Professional College in Faridabad & South Haryana in the year 1997 which ultimately led to ‘Manav Rachna’ adding on Institutes, University, Schools in Delhi-NCR. Now also a campus in Rajiv Gandhi Education City, Sonepat, a dream project of our Hon’ble Chief Minister Sh. Bhupinder Singh Hooda Ji, where Key Education Entities from Govt./Private Sector have started setting up campuses. The Government of Haryana under the able leadership of Sh. B.S. RESOLUTIONS FROM MRIS SECTOR 14 Saumya Arora

I WILL BE A GOOD CITIZEN ‘Good resolutions are simply checks (cheques) that men draw on a bank where they have no account’. Every year we should plan something new because resolutions help us to learn from our mistakes which we have committed in the previous year and improve them. As the sun shines and brings happiness all around, so after a long period of time, we should also start a new journey. So, my resolution for the year 2014 is to give back to the country, help the needy and poor people spread greenery by planting saplings. Keep the surroundings clean and green. Overall, my resolution is to become a cultured and civilized citizen of the country. I will do my best. ‘If a man be gracious and courteous to strangers it shows he is a citizen of the world’. Following the quote, I will work towards my aim of becoming a good citizen of the country and treat everyone as equal. Saumya Arora X-B, MRIS Sector 14

TURNIG RESOLUTIONS TO MISSIONS Every new year’s eve has been a time for looking back into the past, but more importantly, looking forward to the coming year. People change with time, so do their aspirations. If seriously taken, New year Resolution is an opportunity to gauge our goals. For some persons, it is an opportunity to try something new or adventurous. But a major problem with a new year resolution is that it just envisions the end-goal and not the process. “Getting good grades” is a nice resolution to make, but it doesn’t actually mean anything unless the student defines what ‘good grades’ mean to him/her. Is it an A1 or it just comes to an end with a B1 or A2? More importantly, the student must define the process of achieving it. In fact, one should abandon the use of word “Resolution” entirely. It seems to be boring. The one with serious aspirations must use the word “Mission”. Because, those with a Mission do whatever it takes to achieve the goal and those with a Resolution come up with lay excuses that why it is not possible and

abandon it in a few days. So this time, make a Resolution, not to make any furthur resolutions. And if not possible, turn your Resolutions into Missions! Arpit Chawla XI C, MRIS Sector 14

got a golden opportunity to work with UNICEF on a research study on WIFS programme – ‘Weekly Iron Folic Acid Supplementation Programme’. According to this programme weekly iron folic acid tablets are given to children from classes 6 to 8th. I had a great exposure through the project to learn the qualities of leadership and companionship. I also got an opportunity to learn the skills of questionnaire filling, personal interviews, coding etc. In all, it was a really brilliant experience working with UNICEF which was a combination of hard work and enjoyment with the whole team.
