THE GUIDING VISION Being successful is more of a journey, not a destination. And it is this journey of success, which the Founder Visionary of Manav Rachna Educational Institutions, Dr O.P.Bhalla began 17 years ago. The greatest journeys in our lives start off with small steps, and the journey of his life began through one gateway which he and his wife Mrs Satya Bhalla, now the Chief Patron of Manav Rachna Educational Institutions visualized together. They together wanted to give the city of Faridabad where they belonged a threshold for quality education. Their spectrum spread far and near. At the University Campus in Faridabad, which started with 3 Engineering disciplines, different courses were added which ranged from BBA, MBA, Physiotherapy to Dental college and covered almost all spheres of education. To focus on education prior to college level the MREI established schools in Faridabad, Gurgaon and Noida

e envisaged a future 17 years ago, a vision which was well ahead of his times. Dr O.P.Bhalla saw a dream which belonged to today: He was a teacher who not only instructed but inspired, influenced the lives of all those he interacted with, and equipped them with ideas and values that enabled them to enter the stream of national life as worthy citizens. His visions and goals were simple, yet breathtaking in their scope, the complete liberation of the human mind to create better human beings. The woman who stood by him from the initiation of his vision says “You cannot be successful entirely through your own efforts. All of us, if we are to accomplish anything worthwhile, will do it largely through the help and cooperation of the people who work with us,” are the views Mrs Satya Bhalla, Chief Patron MREI expressed when addressing an august gathering of students, Faculty and dignitaries present at the tree plantation drive which began on March26, 2014. “We promise to work together to keep the vision of the Founder Visionary ,” said Mrs Bhalla humbly as she inaugurated the green eco drive: a subject close to the heart of the Legendary who stands unparalleled. “Our success at the Manav Rachna Educational Institutions is not measured by industry accolades or milestones … it is measured by the achievements of our students and the accomplishments of our employees. As an Institution committed to serving its students, Manav Rachna cannot fulfill its promises without the partnership of its Faculty at the University, Principals of the school, our researchers, our students at the University and schools and each and ev-

ery employee of our Institutes. The passion, curiosity, ingenuity that our founder, Dr O.P.Bhalla instilled in us fuels our collective efforts to deliver the best,” expresses Dr Prashant Bhalla, Chancellor Manav Rachna International University. “Founders’ Day is when the MREI pauses to celebrate its rich past and its promising future: the past as we honor the Visionary who dared to dream of a University which would stand par excellence with the best across the globe. In recognition of the importance of both the past and the future, the University will look forward to continuing

become our greatest health challenge for the current century. Dr. Deepak Kumar, during the keynote session spoke on “Physiotherapy- is it a right choice?” He told students that physiotherapy is the right choice provided they have a burning desire to excel. Dr. G.L.Khanna, Dean, FAS cited that exercise and diet is the foundation of optimal fitness, which is needed to minimize the risks of diseases. Investing in nutrition and physiotherapy therefore makes economic sense because it reduces health care costs, improves productivity and economic growth and promotes education, intellectual capacity and social development for present and future generations. FAS (MRIU) released MR International Journal of Applied Health Sciences (biannual journal) on 2nd April 2014 as a tribute to our founder. ‘KATHA’: STORIES OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE ADDED THE EXTRA TO THE ORDINARY For the students of Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), Manav Rachna International University, who are at the threshold of a career, guidance is required to steer them towards the path of success. As part of the series of lectures under Katha, FMS invited stalwarts from various fields Katha Lecture by Ms Singh—March 4, 2014
Annuraj
Ace shooter Annuraj Singh, an alumnus of FMS, MRIU, is an Arjuna Award winner, Olympian and winner of various medals in Common Wealth Games and other international shooting championships. She spoke on success and motivation Annuraj Singh is a down to earth personality who says she is proud to be an Indian. Having been introduced to the sport of shooting in her middle school days, Annuraj decided to choose a different path for her career. She set the goal of being a world level shooter, and followed it passionately. She suggested to students that one should focus on his/ her goal, and the goal will itself motivate the person. However, just thinking about our goals is not enough. One must be determined to achieve it.
Katha Lecture by Professor Rakesh Khurana—March 6, 2014 Senior academician and now an entrepreneur, Professor Rakesh Khurana has been associated in senior administrative positions with premier educational institutions such as IIM, Ahmedabad; All India Management Association (AIMA) and International Management Institute (IMI), New Delhi. Professor Anjum Chopra surrounded by FMS students
Khurana has been instrumental in starting CAT and MAT for MBA entrance. Presently, Professor Khurana has started an enterprise Knowledge Network India providing online learning solutions. Talking about success, Professor Khurana said everyone has his/ her own definition of success. It is a phenomenon which he said brings along with it a lot of negatives, which may sometimes even overshadow the positives. It is a challenge to manage negatives such as aggression, arrogance and complacence. Giving examples from his own journey, Prof. Khurana said life poses many challenges, and to come up to each occasion makes a person strong. All through his academic and professional life, Prof. Khurana said he has been seeking answers to questions which came from his own observations and circumstances. And most of the solutions came from common sense. Prof. Rakesh Khurana told the students to dream big, set high goals for themselves and build attitudes for coping with failure, rather than get discouraged.
Katha Lecture by Ms. Chopra—March 10, 2014
Anjum
With an international cricketing career spanning 17 years, Ms Anjum Chopra has played 116 one day international games, and has even led the Indian team to a series win abroad. She has been honoured with the Arjuna Award and the Padma Shri (to be presented later in the year). Ms Anjum Chopra’s grounded personality cast a strong impression on all those present. From

a cricketer, young enthusiasts wanted to know why young talents in the country often go unnoticed, and politics plays spoilsport. Ms Chopra shed light on norms which need to be followed in district and state level cricket, which enable talented players to be selected for the senior team. She said one should consistently perform, work hard and not think about rewards. Instead, we should try to excel so that the system recognizes our efforts. When asked about her role model, she said women achievers in the international sports domain impressed her the most. She narrated how she drew inspiration from female cadets leading the marching contingents at the Republic Day parade. Talking about success, Ms. Anjum Chopra said success definitely makes one happy, but as successful people, we must not forget the efforts of others who have made it possible. She said we should follow Mahatma Gandhi, who said: “If you want to see the change, be the change”. Ms. Anjum Chopra’s message to all students was: Work as per priorities; Success is a journey, not a destination. She said life is a canvas which we need to paint ourselves, and when we look at it, it reflects back on us.

FOR A BETTER TOMORROW…DR PRASHANT BHALLA IS BRAND AMBASSADOR
L
auding luminaries in the field of Education and Sport, the Nav Bharat Times (NBT) chose Dr Prashant Bhalla, Chancellor, Manav Rachna International University, as the Brand Ambassador in Education as part of its ‘Faridabad Rising’ initiative. The recognition, which is a hallmark of his commitment to the quality education movement in Faridabad, further reaffirms his exemplary contribution in making Manav Rachna Educational Institutions a world class and vibrant educational entity. At a Round Table Meet organized on February 16, 2014, in Park Plaza Hotel, Faridabad, NBT invited eminent personalities from the world of Education and Sports to express their views and opinions in the said fields. Police Commissioner Mr A.S. Chawla was present on the occasion as chief guest. While Dr Prashant Bhalla was nominated as the Brand Ambassador in Education, Anisa Sayyed, double gold medalist in shooting at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, was selected as the Brand Amabassador in Sports. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Prashant Bhalla, paid rich tributes to the enduring leg-
acy of Late Dr O.P. Bhalla, founder visionary of Manav Rachna Educational Institutions. He expressed admiration for his father’s visionary mission and zeal, his tremendous foresight that has made Manav Rachna what it is today. He stated further that educational institutions should not just fulfill academic goals and aspirations but help in eradication of social evils. Dr Prashant Bhalla also felt that books alone cannot foster holistic development among students and emphasized upon the need for extracurricular activities for giving vent to their creativity and skills. He believed that if in some ways we have not come up to the desired level of expectations in the field of education, it is essentially because of a lack of a distinct and original line of thinking-- a
17
thinking that was envisioned by late Dr O.P. Bhalla many years ago. Dr Prashant Bhalla also said that it was important for institutions to come together and work towards a common goal and direction, thus securing Faridabad’s place in the annals of the nation. In the IT sector too, there is ample scope for improvement and growth in Faridabad, Dr Bhalla added. His ideas were echoed by Dr C.B. Rawal, Chairman of the Rawal Group of Institutions, who called for the need to set up IT colleges at the district level equipped with the latest facilities and technology. Mr A.S. Chawla expressed that Faridabad should establish itself not just as an educational hub but as a centre of excellence. Schools should impart not just bookish knowledge but good ethics, morals and values.
MRIS 14
REMEMBERING OUR FOUNDER THROUGH THE PAST AND THE FUTURE MRIS-14 became an enthusiastic participant in the exhibition held to commemorate the birth anniversary of our Founder Visionary
T
he Founder’s Day celebrations commemorated the contribution of our legendary Dr O.P. Bhalla. It is when the institution paused to celebrate its rich past and promising future. The past as we honour the Visionary Dr O.P. Bhalla who conceived a dream and gave it wings; the future as one can observe in our dynamic students. In recognition of this significant amalgamation of its past and future, MRIU opened its doors and flagged off a series of events. The entire campus community- faculty, staff, students and other academic institutions participated to reflect upon our accomplishments as well as to renew the commitment. The Founder’s Day was also preceded by a month long series of events. The events ranged from interactive symposiums, group discussions, recitations to observing Earth Hour, tree plantation drive, blood donation camps and art and science exhibition. MRIS-14 became an enthusiastic participant in the exhibition. The department of I Carnegie, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Fine Arts carved a niche for themselves in the exhibition. All the departments strove to extend their collaboration in furthering the interest of the community at large. The aim of all MRIS-14 Exhibits was to further lead the vision of Dr O.P. Bhalla which he epitomized i.e each single unit has the potential to bring a revolutionary change in the positive progression of society. I CARNEGIE-The students of MRIS 14 showcased 2 projects on robotics which aimed at the saving of lives during an earthquake. One of the projects was Slide-A-Step which converts a normal staircase into a slider during tremors hence reducing the evacuation time from the building and saving more lives. The second project was Tilt- O- Meter which reduces the swing of the buildings by reading the value using the accelerometer sensor and applying the pendulum effect which pushes the counter weight of the building to the opposite side and preventing the building from collapsing. So let’s beat the quake and save lives.
(Left) MRIS 14 Students and Faculty with their Biocompost project; (top)Touching traditional chords through art
PHYSICS-In this field, the project was not only aimed at the conservation of energy but also minimizing our expenses by using sunlight. The project demonstrated the concept of infrared rays and solar energy so as to ensure safety and conservation of electricity. The infra red rays detect the presence of a vehicle on the road and warns about divergence at night time. The solar powered traffic lights make use of solar panels which trap sunlight during the daytime and use some amount to charge the traffic signals. As soon as a vehicle comes in the proximity of the traffic light, the sensors detect the presence and the lights start signaling. Solar energy is a renewable source of energy and can act as a desperately needed substitute over the non-renewable sources. It was a team vision to create something that would effectively ensure safety by using sunlight which is readily available. CHEMISTRY- The basic purpose of the project was to save every single drop of water and convert it into potable drinking water. The team demonstrated the precise stages and process through a partially working model of the sewage water treatment plant. The process involved the bulk filtration of dirty sewer water by letting it pass through first physical filtration and thereby through various chemical treatments. The project strived to materialize the
18
need for safe drinking water and to conserve each single drop of the blue planet. BIOLOGY-The motto of the project was ‘From Garbage To Garden’. The efficacy of the project can be exemplified in the state of Bengaluru and the MRIS-14 students aimed at bringing the same to our neighborhood. The project targeted the household waste that can be converted into rich humus. The bio-degradable waste which can be classified into two basic groups i.e green garbage (moist) and brown garbage (dry) can be layered in a big plastic tub bearing holes for anaerobic activity of bacteria. This waste in a week can turn into compost. The project also depicted how by using agar plates and isolated soil micro flora the desired results can be achieved within two days. The MRIS-14 Biology team became pioneers for this in the localities of Faridabad. FINE ARTS-It is said that painting is a medium that gives soul to the inanimate--the same was observed in the exhibits of the Department of Arts and Painting, MRIS 14. The ethos was to touch the cord of tradition. The plethora of colours used and the style of aboriginal art were quite vivid. The Madhubani and Warli art with acrylic colours and oil pastels were quite enthralling
MRIS 46, 21C & MRIU PRODUCING POWER AND ENERGY MRIS 21C enthralled visitors with their Electro-Gym project at the Science Exhibition on Prerna Diwas to pay tribute to our founder Dr. O.P. Bhalla The students of MRIS 21-C had put up an Electro–Gym for the Science Exhibition to pay homage to Dr. O.P Bhalla. In this project, the muscular energy is converted into electrical energy by working out on the Gym cycle. The Dynamo attached with the cycle helps in generating electricity which gets stored in the battery and can be utilized for powering basic low-power appliances such as fans, lights, etc. So, if a person spends one hour per day on the cycle, he/she can generate 18.2 kilowatts of electricity and prevent 4,380 litres of carbon dioxide released per year. If we pedal for 2 hours, then we should be able to produce around 400 watt of power. That is enough to power a 200 wt television for two hours or a 100w light bulb for 4 hours. A 20w laptop PC could be charged for twenty hours. This method provides a cost-effective generation of electricity. So it is the most environment friendly project. This project was immensely popular amongst the students, as many were curious to know about its working and wanted to get it implemented in their institutes

MRS SATYA BHALLA EXPRESSES HER VIEWS ON WORLD WOMEN’S DAY On the occasion of Women’s Day Mrs Satya Bhalla, Chief Patron, Manav Rachna Educational Institutions, spoke to REPORTER and expressed her views on women’s issues focusing her attention on the importance of educating the girl child In this age of consumerism and globalization, do you notice a change in attitudes towards women? After all, we have come a long way from the time women were in purdah? Yes, we do have women forging ahead in their careers, but their percentage is miniscule. That besides, the recent spate of incidents where women have been subjected to varying degrees of violation does not speak of a progressive but a regressive society. But then, on a more optimistic note, our country is noted for some remarkable women who have made a huge difference to the way we think and believe. When I think of Kiran Bedi, Indra Nooyi, Chhanda Kochhar, my heart fills with joy and immeasurable pride. If we have them as our role models, we know that the day is not far when our girl children will be aspiring to follow in their footsteps. Education would be their tool to a better tomorrow. Let us not rob them of that right. In a country which deifies Goddesses and worships shakti, true empowerment of the women lies in giving education to the girl child. If we educate a man, we educate an individual, but when we educate the girl child, we educate a family.
With Women’s Day celebrated across the world on 8 March, do you think we need to focus our energies on the education of the girl child? As it has been rightly said that the women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights. Hence, women’s rights and women’s empowerment is not just a feminist issue, it is everybody’s issue, be they the father of a girl child, an educationist, activist or individuals in positions of authority and influence. The education of the girl child begins at home. It is time to wake up to the reality that the girl child is not an unwanted member of the family but an asset who has the right to education and equal opportunities.
Are you suggesting that education of the girl child is related to gender inequality? Exactly. Gender inequality in the Indian education
20
system is in many ways responsible for our girls going without a proper education. If we are talking about women’s empowerment, education is the first step towards securing the future of our girl child. It is time we gave importance to her identity, her needs and her welfare.
How can we build a better world for the girl child where she has the right to education among other basic needs? When we look at the education of the girl child, we have to consider the fact that ours is a developing nation where there are many who are too poor to send their children to school. Many students drop out since their parents cannot afford to provide uniform, text books, school bags and school fees. In such a scenario, the girl child is right at the bottom of the priority list. If parents are counselled on sending their children to school, a special emphasis has to be given on the importance of educating the girl in the family. She is neither a decorative object nor a helping hand who has no role beyond tending the home and the hearth. A girl’s inequality and illiteracy is linked to several other social issues: how else does one explain instances of dowry where the girl is more of a burden and the helpless victim, forever at the receiving end? Education gives women a voice and the confidence to make informed decisions and choices.
Do you think that International Women’s Day can actually create awareness about women’s rights or is it just a lot of marketing hype to sell products and services? If we can have a Father’s Day, a Mother’s Day, a Friendship Day, then why not a Women’s Day? At least it puts the spotlight on women for a change.. We need a Women’s Day to create awareness about women and her role and significance in society. In my eyes,Women’s Day is Sensitisation Day where we can all do our bit to change the destiny of women’s lives. Her shame is our shame, her neglect is our neglect. Let us learn to take responsibility for the way we treat our women in this country.

THE POWER OF 49: SALUTING OUR WOMEN ACHIEVERS
Faculty of Management Studies, Manav Rachna International University organized ‘THE POWER OF 49’: International Women’s Day Celebration on March 8, 2014
T
he world today has come to realize that with 49 per cent of its population being constituted by females, it is definitely a force to reckon with. As a mark of respect to women, Faculty of Management Studies, Manav Rachna International University, organized an event on March 8, 2014, on the occasion of International Women’s Day. Aptly called “The Power of 49”, it was conducted in association with Indian Overseas Bank. As part of the event, two panel discussions were organized by FMS. Both the discussions were moderated by Director, FMS, Dr. Chavi Bhargava Sharma. The first discussion was on ‘Breaking the glass ceiling at the workplace’. Experienced men and women from the corporate shared their viewpoints about the precision and meticulous nature of women professionals. The panel consisted of: Ms. Aparna Samueal Balasundaram: Co-Founder at WorkSkills; Ms. Celine George: Director at GreenClouds and Partner at People Facet; Ms. Kiran Singh: Director Marketing at Delta Faucet Company India; Ms. Mandira Kapoor: Human Resources Professional; Mr. Praveen Gupta: Director - HR at AECOM and Mr. Rajat Tewari: Head - Leadership Talent Development, South Asia and ASEAN. The panelists had varying ideas but the one point which emerged was that Indian women strive to achieve the pivotal balance between the work place and the home front. Our society places demands on women through set norms which need to be followed. However, once women decide to go ahead, they have the potential to excel in all fields. Names such as Indra Nooyi,
Chanda Kocchar, Shikha Sharma, Kiran Bedi explained this further. The second panel discussion was held on the topic of ‘Empowering women’. The panel was a combination of entrepreneurs and social activists and media professionals. It was constituted by Ms. Ritika Sinha: Entrepreneur, working with 70 underprivileged women; Mr. Vijay Rajkumar: Masters in Social Work from University of Delhi; Ms. Runa Maitra: HR& OD consultant; Founder and Director of People Talent International; Ms. Ratna Saxena: Professional in the field of social defense and child protection and Ms. Bindu from HT Media. The panelists felt that even though we have covered a lot of ground in women’s upliftment, our societies are not truly free if we do not uphold our fundamental ideals of fairness and equality. Representatives from the Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) made the day memorable by honouring women entrepreneurs who had come up with promising business ideas. FMS and IOB felicitated a group of women who had come together to work as an entrepreneurial cooperative. The General Manager of IOB announced various lucrative loans and savings schemes for the employees of Manav Rachna Educational Institutions. Speaking on the occasion, Vice Chancellor of Manav Rachna International University, Dr. N C Wadhwa, said that it is today impossible to ignore the might of women. As a nation and through our culture, we have a sacred place for women in our society, which we should always uphold.

BONDS THAT GO ON FOREVER… Architect Jatinder Saigal, Director Projects, Manav Rachna Vidyanatariksha reminisces about his close kinship with Founder Visionary Dr O.P. Bhalla and the sublime philosophy behind the installation of Dr O.P. Bhalla’s awe-inspiring Statue
I
first met Dr O.P. Bhalla in 1986 when he commissioned me as an architect for his house.Within a couple of meetings, we became close friends and that was to continue for the Architect Jatinder Saigal rest of our lives. Our wavelengths matched perfectly and we seemed to share the same ideas and thoughts. Dr O. P. Bhalla had this remarkable quality of translating thoughts into action, achieving his goals with great zest and determination. He made Quality Education the main mantra of his life, though he was equally passionate about the environment and the upliftment of society. Today, when we look at the MREI campus, we feel it is a symbol of Dr O.P. Bhalla’s strength and ingenuity, an embodiment of his heart and soul. When Dr Prashant Bhalla asked me in September last year to undertake work on Dr O.P. Bhalla’s memorial, I considered the whole concept as a temple of thought. After a careful survey of the campus, I zeroed in on the site best suited for the purpose. The focus, I felt, should be clearly on the sculpture with the sky as the backdrop. The place of the life size statue of Dr O. P. Bhalla feels like an invitation to people to become better human beings. Award winning sculptor Gautam Pal from Kolkata who has trained in fine arts from Italy, worked tirelessly round the clock for over 4 months to create the 23 feet statue. We decided that a sitting posture would best exemplify the thinker in Dr O.P. Bhalla and make an instant connect with the visitors on site. The use of a bronze cast for the statue was deliberate to convey the right texture and mood. Dr O.P. Bhalla was immensely fond of red and white Dholpur sandstone, the very material used in the podium and sitting area around the sculpture. The installation is not just about the sculpture alone—the steps and the sitting area all add up to a soulful experience. About the writer: Dr Jatinder Saigal, a civil engineer turned architect is a gold medalist from the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi. At Manav Rachna, he is the Director, Projects teaching Civil Engineering students at MRIU.

And Gynae Society to raise awareness about youth health concerns “Being Fit and Healthy isn’t a fad or a trend. Instead, it’s a Lifestyle.” When Health and Youth come together, it can be an irresistible combination. At the FOGSI Youth Health Mela, organized on April 11, 2014 at MRIU, there was much interest and curiosity over health concerns among the students. FOGSI— the Federation of Obstetricians & Gynaecologist of India (FOGSI) — is the largest organization representing 29,000 practicing gynaecologists. The event under the aegis of North Zone Yuva FOGSI 2014, was organized by Faridabad Obst. & Gynae. computers will help her connect with the outside world at the click of a button. Dr. Bhalla always believed that a healthy nation can be built up only with young and healthy minds. On the occasion of World Health Day on 7th April 2014, the students of Grade V presented an assembly to apprise students about the importance of health and fitness. Students focused on the responsibility of every one towards improving the health of the community by protecting against Vector-borne diseases, the theme of this year’s World Health Day. A talk show and stage play enlightened the fellow students about their contribution to the cause. Women’s empowerment was a concept very dear to Dr. O.P. Bhalla. He advocated their importance in making the society balanced, stable, progressive and value-based. The teachers, thus
presented a befitting homage to Dr. O. P. Bhalla through an enactment, which was presented to a full house of parents. To describe the life of this enormous luminary in mere words is no mean feat. However, the music faculty of MRIS, Charmwood created and composed a poignant song in honour of the legendary Dr O.P. Bhalla. It is as follows: इक मानव की सुन्दर रचना मानव रचना, मानव रचना था आपका यही सपना, मानव रचना, मानव रचना हारा नहीं जो मुश्किलों से कभी जिसका मकसद था मंज़िल पाना धूप में देखकर, थोड़ी-सी छाया, सीखा नहीं जिसने, रुक जाना । Through this humble gesture, all the staff and students of Manav Rachna took a solemn pledge to keep moving ahead, inspired by Dr O.P. Bhalla’s vision, mission and noble pursuits.

Wadhwa spoke at length about the nature of our democracy and constitution, stating, “Unless we adhere to the directives of the constitution and exercise our franchise, we would be shattering the dreams of our leaders who formulated India’s constitution. Dr N.C. Wadhwa felt that the youth of today are a sensitized lot who have often taken to the streets to voice their protest (the Nirbhaya incident is a case in point). He urged the youth to refrain from being “passive spectators” since they are “the tools who can catalyse the change they wish to see”. Col. (Retd) V.K. Manav Rachna International School, Sector-14 celebrated Kala Sanyojan, an art fest that gave students the perfect opportunity to experiment with diverse art forms and emerge richer for the experience
A
Unique Art Fest, Kala Sanyojan, was held at the Manav Rachna International School, Sector-14, Faridabad, where 11schools from across Delhi and the NCR region participated in the mega event. Aimed at celebrating art in different forms, the four-day Fest (from 6-9 February, 2014) had Professor Nuzhat Kazmi (HOD, Department of Art History, Jamia Millia Islamia University) as the Chief Guest on 6 February, 2014 and Professor Syed Ghazanfer H. Zaidi, Dean, Faculty of Fine Arts, Jamia Millia Islamia University, as the Chief Guest on 8 February, 2014. Expressing his views on the art extravaganza, Dr Prashant Bhalla said, “Our Faculty and staff work together to ensure that students have the opportunity to enjoy a rich diversity of curricular and co-curricular experiences that will help them to develop as articulate, literate and global thinkers with integrity and depth of character. Children from 11 schools of Delhi and NCR regions participated with their creative wonders under different categories namely Still Life and Painting, Calligraphy, Photography, Wire sculp-
ture, Wall Graffiti, Serigraphy, Paper mache and Tie and Dye. Eminent artists like Anis Siddhqui (a noted calligrapher), Shagufta Begum (Instructor at Jamia Millia University), Kaushal Kumar (Associate Professor, Department of Painting, Jamia Millia University) were there to lend their expertise and guide the students on their aesthetic journey. Expressing his views about the need for an art fest of this caliber, Dr Amit Bhalla Vice President, Manav Rachna Vidyanatariksha, said “Art is an elixir of life, a thing of beauty which gives us everlasting joy. During this four day long programme our endeavor is to provide a plethora of opportunities to the students in the field of art.” He stated that the Art Fest is being organized to enhance the learning process of the students and urged the students to cultivate “a passion that would help them to relax, refresh and enjoy themselves in life”. Greatly appreciative of MRIS’ artistic endeavours, Professor Nuzhat Kazmi addressed the students saying, “Go with the spirit of enjoying what you do. Everyone has the artist hidden in them. Life itself can be art for which you don’t

need a canvas. After all, beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder.” She encouraged them to be a keen observer and trust in themselves to grow and evolve as a person. Taking pride in the students’ artistic creations, Deepkila Bhalla Executive Director, MRIS-14 expressed, “Kala Sanyojan is curated to form interrelating creative genre. I hope this fest forges a true bond of ancient legacy with radical modern creative expression.” Ms Mamta Wadhwa, Principal, MRIS-14 said that the fest envisioned an ecstasy of creation. She hoped the Art Fest’s collaborative sessions gave students an ideal opportunity for self expression and forged enduring relationships. All the exhibits created by the students were displayed on 8-9 February, 2014 for parents to capture unforgettable moments of colour. Artists at the Art Fest like Anis Siddiqui felt elated to be a part of the Art event. He said there is a need to educate our children in art and expose them to different artistic creations through the ages. For Kaushal Kumar, the Art Fest was a great learning experience. “I believe in co-learning. I am not a teacher here but a learner among the students since I am of the firm belief that art is never a one way process,” he explained. Mr Kaushal was there conducting a workshop on graphiti, assisted by his Jamia Millia students Kashish and Rehan. Deeply enthused by the creativity at the Art Fest, S.A. Faiz, said, “The Art Fest would expose students to various art forms at an early age. It does not matter if they don’t make art their calling. But I hope the festival will give them a boost to step into another world, full of colour and forms, some of which they are going to create.” In fact, it was the fascination for “something new” that drew Dev Arya, Grade V student of MRIS Sec 51, to participate in the making of wire sculpture. And it was the same novelty value that intrigued Anusha Thakur, MRIS 46 student, to try her hand at wire art. “I thought it would be interesting to do something different.” She tried to twist the wires into the shape of a flower and was pleased with the result. Her instructor Himank, a student of Jamia Millia University, was there to show some techniques with wires, visibly happy with the students’ creative skills. At the Tie and Dye sessions, Shagufta Begum, taught students to create definite patterns by using threads and fabrics.”Be it suits or even tablecloths, we can make tie and dye fabrics right from our homes,” she said. The art fest at the culmination of the event gave children the perfect opportunity to go back with an enhanced understanding and perennial love for art.

MRIS Noida
EXPLORING THE HIGHWAYS AND BYWAYS IN EACH CULTURE The Paragon Curriculum at MRIS Noida has made learning a joyful experience for the students as they imbibed knowledge through role playing and hands on lessons Paragon is like a time machine which takes the students back in time through its unique Curriculum and hands on approach. The Paragon Curriculum helps the child to achieve the highest possible outcome based on the building blocks of learning. It looks to the past to prepare students to become architects of tomorrow. The Paragon Content matter replaces the traditional history, geography, civics and social studies subjects. It is interdisciplinary, engaging, student-centred and discovery-based; hence it increases knowledge. Rather than teach history in bits and pieces in an arbitrary sequence, Paragon is a fully integrated chronological approach. Each grade starts the journey with The Ancient World in the beginning of the year and then moves to the Classical World, the Middle ages, the Renaissance and finishes on the 21st Century. At MRIS, Noida, we have been teaching the curriculum with the same fervour as it has been designed for the students as well as for the teachers. Our journey has been full of enthusiastic experiences and wow moments where our students have evolved as discoverers from being keen learners at the start of the programme. The Paragon Curriculum has been framed in such a way that it makes learning a joyful experience. Students acquire knowledge through hands on lessons and approaches. The Paragon events ensure social and business skills such as presentation and self confidence. It helps students break the ice through regular assemblies, presentation skills, skits, narrations, music and dance. The teachers always try to accelerate the motivational level of the students by appreciating their efforts and activities which ultimately help them to be self-confident and overcome stage fright. Parents are often overwhelmed to see their children perform with such skill and confidence. They participate in role play and activities planned by the teachers. The students put up an excellent show despite a very short tenure of Paragon inclusion in the curriculum.

HOW TO BUILD A POSITIVE ATTITUDE It is not always easy to stay positive and keep a good attitude. As things go wrong throughout your day, it is easy to let negative thoughts start to take over. Thankfully there are many things that you can do to help maintain a positive attitude. These are things that you can do on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis to make sure you keep your positive focus. 1. Believe in yourself and in your abilities. 2. Wake up Early: Waking up early allows you to get a head start on the day. You can prepare for work and start your day without feeling rushed. 3. Exercise is useful to combat depression and to improve overall positive mood. 4. Never compare yourself with people.
5. Improve your self esteem: understand your strength and weakness and work to improve your confidence. 6. Give yourself choices. You choose two things which are appropriate and decide between them. 7. Always have a back up plan ready: Understand that Things Won’t Always Go as Planned and if you plan and expect everything in life will go as you planned, you will be quickly disappointed. 8. Be Thankful:Take some time and be thankful. Be thankful about what you have, who you are, and what your life is like. The very act of focusing on what you are thankful for will help you maintain your positive attitude.
9. Surround Yourself with Positive People: Avoid sarcasm and negativity yourself. The people around you have a big impact on you. They also impact how you think. If you surround yourself with negative people you will be negative as well. 10. Take some time to write strong, life-giving, positive affirmation statements. Make a commitment to read those statements out loud every day. Enjoy how great they make you feel. Know in your heart that you’re making progress, even if you can’t see it just yet. Just keep affirming the positive. Neeti Arora School Counselor MRIS CW Branch

MRIS Noida LEARNING BY DOING
DROP EVERYTHING AND READ The Editorial Board of MRIS Noida under the guidance of Principal Ms Sunanda Grover initiated a novel ‘Drop Everything And Read’ Programme wherein the students set up a Book Reading Corner named Book Buddies. Open to every child at the School, the corridor area has been beautifully set up with a book shelf which is full of all kinds of interesting books. The books for the Corner have been donated by the students for “shared reading – more reading”. The place has been decorated and all efforts have been put in to make the corner a reader’s delight. The students love the place and
are going back again and again to discover the joys of reading. They visit the corner, pick up a book of their choice and even sit to browse through the book. The students are so excited with the programme that they are pooling in books which were lying unread at home. The Book Reading Station has become the favorite hangout place for them. It is the kind of space which has been inculcating a reading habit among them. Reading and visiting the corridor has added so much fun to their lives as students seem to have developed an engaging passion and pastime.
LEARNING THROUGH PROJECTS Children at MRIS Noida are learning to do projects all on their own as the School takes on a child-centric approach towards learning and education Projects done at school can be wonderful teaching tools. They are considered an alternative to paper-based learning, rote memorization and teacher-led classrooms. Project-based learning incur numerous benefits, most notable being a greater depth of understanding of concepts, broader knowledge base, improved communication and interpersonal/social skills, enhanced leadership skills, increased creativity and improved writing skills. MRIS strongly feels that children should do all their projects at school and not at home on the premise that they need to learn how to develop skills to complete a project from beginning to end.The projects are a reflection of their work and creativity, and in that their facilitators provide the necessary guidance. The school offers all
the material with which they need to complete their projects, be it scissors, glue stick, marker pens, colored paper and all other stationeries. If working parents find it difficult to procure the project materials, the school takes the initiative to arrange for the same. For MRIS Noida firmly believes that parents need to spend quality time with their children and hence the School’s effort. Since children are involved in doing projects all by themselves, it is helping them to understand concepts and learn better. We follow a child- centric approach of learning where the child becomes capable, independent and confident of his/her own abilities and emerges as a team player. PARENTS HAVE THEIR SAY… “I would be happy if my child does his projects in school with his friends. As a Mom, I feel that I should be aware of what he is studying as well as the status of class projects. So I don’t mind

This is our way of lending our support to a meaningful cause and fulfilling Dr O P Bhalla’s vision.” The main aim of this initiative was to help children understand the importance of an eco-friendly environment and waste recycling.
