RAINWATER COLLECTION SYSTEM

The rainwater run off from the highway system everyday which is huge amount o f waste. The collected rainwater could be treated then be wildly used. The s ite we have just near the Charles river where the water sport is wildly spread. The collected water could be used for the water sport, such as swim ming and kayak training, also served surrounding neighborhood living water supply. The architecture was designed above the overpass because the collected w ater need to be heated during the daytime. The benefit of this design is heat ing water in the roof tube system and cooling the space under it at the same time during the summer. On the other hand, the energy absorb from water could keep the space warm during the winter. The water is storage under ground which

The swimming pool is located under the overpass because the sunlight was h armful for long time during summer, and the heating system could also keep the swimming pool warm during winter. The above structure served as a service space for

One Financial Plaza Buddhist Workplace A adaptive reuse project, which tried to introduce buddhist philosophy into modern workplace design. Aiming to reduce the employee's working pressure.

18

19

THE MODERN WORKPLACE COULD BE VARIOUS USAGE AND MAKE A BETTER OFFICE

SITE ANALYSIS Standing as the second-tallest building in Providence, its taut-skin cladding is done in pre-cast concrete and travertine. William McKenzie Woodward, calling it a "lackluster addition to both the street and the skyline" saying that its "blunt mass" is made "all the more graceless" by its travertine curtain wall.

Working is necessary to the survival of most people in this world. As modern society has developed, working pressure has become more intense, and employees face more job pressure than ever, which is negatively affecting employees’ psychological states of mind. And the setting for most workplaces is in the international style, an architectural style characterized by simple geometry and a disregard for human scale. This unrelenting atmosphere does not allow employees to relax during working time. Introducing Buddhist philosophy, which

ARCHITECTURE CAN IMPROVE THE STATUS OF HUMAN MIND

seeks harmony between humans and the environment, can help modern people be freed from their psychological issues. Buddhism as a religion has existed for thousands years, which teachs people facing the miserable situations to pull through. I want to introduce buddhist philosophy to create new typology of workplace. This will establish an environment that will effect, affect, attract, retain and to motivate its employees through the experience of Buddhist-inflected workspaces.

“PURE FLIGHT” THE IDEAL STATE OF NATURAL FLIGHT, THAT IS DESIRED BUT CAN NEVER BE ACHIEVED.

TERMINUS

"APPARATUS" The paradoxical

"SEPARATION" refers to the immediacy

instrument that both facilitates the achievement of human flight, while simultaneously withholding or diminishing the experience of natural flight. Ex: Helicopter, Airplane, Space Craft, Hang Glider, Parachute, Squirrel Suits, Wind Tunnels etc.

with which a subject feels and understands their own separation from the ground. Connected to a greater understanding of one's own weight.

"BALANCE"refers to the

directness of a subject's interaction with the forces in flight, and immediacy with which they must work to accommodate them.

B

"FREEDOM" Freedom is a

word that is typically used to explain flight. There are two different types of freedom that are present in 'Pure Flight': Perceptual Freedom and Spatial Freedom.

S6

SELF-WEIGHT AND THE BALANCE OF FORCES

Hanging sand bag system

S4

S5

In order to achieve the from we need, sand bags could not absent from this structure. Using bag weight stretched from can show the force of gravity, at the same time, help tourist realize how self-weight is important to the pure flight.

S3

TENSION/TORSION

Sewing pieces for frabic To gain the super from, we conculated the pieces of frabic in need and decided to sewing all piece. Basing on the 3D model we built, we enlarge to the real scale piece. We also need to take care of these sewing line to make sure it working well during the exhibition. So we do the double layer sewing. Flat Cut Pattern

C

SEPARATION-FROM, SOMETHING ELSE

S2

"WEIGHTLESSNESS"

Weightlessness occurs when you can no longer be oriented. .

S1

"SPAC IAL FREEDOM"

Stretched From

Spatial freedom referers to a lack of geographical boundaries. Spatial freedom can be achieved to a high degree in human flight.

33

The state of ‘Pure Flight’ is one where the subject experiences separation from ground, balance, perceptual freedom and spatial freedom equally, with immediacy, and to their fullest capacities. Although these elements are still present in “Human Flight”, the experience and immediacy with which they are felt, is diminished by the intervention of, and dependency on, an

34

apparatus. In the hopes of retrieving some of what is lost in human flight, we intend to create an experience of enhanced awareness of: weight, balance, separation from ground and perceptual freedom by designing an environment where longing and a loss of boundaries and limitations are perceived.

The goals for this project is to adaptive reuse of the original structure and turn into a modern commercial space. The site was a iron beam and grider structure warehouse, which is one storage space within it.
