Skincare s l a i t n Esse “You are in for a treat”

NIACINAMIDE It’s safe to say that most of us are slowly moving from hoarding makeup to hoarding skincare products, so it’s vital to know what exactly goes into these products that either help your skin or at least claim that they do.Every once in a while, skincare gives an eminent shoutout to it’s star ingredients and this time around it’s Niacinamide, also known as nicotinamide which is a form vitamin B3. Niacinamide is an anti-inflammatory, water soluble vitamin which is found in many foods including yeast, meat, milk, eggs, green vegetables and cereal grains. It is also found in vitamin B complex supplements. It guards and improves the outer layer of our skin and makes it look supple. The best part however, is that it can be used with all kinds of routines.

24

What that means is if you’re using products that consist of AHA’s, BHA’s, vitamin C or even hyaluronic acids, you have absolutely no reson to worry. If you’re looking to reduce nasty blackheads, niacinamide not only clears up the impurities but also helps in minimizing and tightening your pores which means it keeps them from coming back too quickly. Additionally, it improves uneven skin tone pigmentation, softens lines and wrinkles, and also helps spots fade. The hydration that this ingredient provides also leaves your skin looking dewy and fresh. In a nutshell, it soothes your skin and prevents extra oils from clogging your pores. Moreover

if you use retinol and worry about how it dries out your skin, applying a serum containing this star ingredient will surely come to your rescue.

Artistry Insider : [ LINDA WEISZ ]

Linda Weisz is a 20 yearold MakeUp Artist from Romania She is more popularly recognised by her instagram handle ‘@lwartistry’. Through the interview, she led us into her bold, colour intrinsic life. A certified makeup artist during the working hours of the day, more importantly a true artiste at heart - Linda is accustomed to finding a certain level of balance between the likes of her customers and the plethora of imaginative looks that she paints up for herself. Her path to makeup wasn’t unlike any of ours; being self conscious at a young age. Worried about the blemishes on her face, she started to explore her curiosity for the art. Always an avid painter, it was no surprise when her innate abilities were not only noticed but deeply admired by her peers.

As someone with a clear stance on cruelty free products, our young MUA is aware of all the discrepancies and lack of transparency in this realm. She tried to maintain this cruelty-free stance within her professional makeup kit and personal as well. Brands that have been positively acclaimed by her are ‘Deciem’ for skincare and Pixi, Nyx and Anastasia Beverly Hills for makeup. To come up with her breath-takingly adventurous looks, Linda starts out the conceptualisation process by first picking a colour family. After picking the right hues, the next step is to work on textures and then finally, a connecting story. Speaking like a true artisanal force, Linda explains makeup to be an abstract canvas for her to use.

Being in the industry for over three years, there are many aspects one can learn from this uber talented individual. Days starting as early as 8 am and various types of clientele walking in through the doors of her studio have shown Linda that often, extremely high and unrealistic standards are set when people want to look a certain way. The reference images of conventional beauty, coated with the perfect filter, can sometimes add to a large level of unhappiness once the make-up process is done. Clients often fail to recognise the reality of having unique facial structures and skin textures. This can be a source of disappointment and loss of confidence for both, client and artist. Something Linda hopes to see changes in, within the industry, is the commercial appeal of quantity over quality. “If brands release few, good products with actual reasoning and not just profit oriented goals, it could benefit both brand and consumer”, says Linda, explaining the lack of transparency amidst the entirety of this platform.

31

Taking a break from all the layers of cosmetics, Linda likes to go for an almost all-bare face on a regular day. Giving more importance to her skincare, she practices two sets of routines everyday, which focus on simplicity and actual science related ideologies. In reference to science, Linda describes her personal style as pastel, grungy and technical. As someone who is driven by the importance of having personal style over aimless trend following, this MUA strives to find concepts that include all three aspects. Being motivated and inspired by loved ones and other such artists on social media, she aims to land her dream job of working on fashion editorial based makeup.

“ PASTEL, GRUNGY & TECHNICAL ”

Communication and trust seem to be key aspects of her work lifestyle, whilst reminding herself to constantly push forward. A true ray of positivity, Linda reminds us that it’s alright to make a mistake - the process and what you learn from it, is what truly matters. A personal makeup tip, courtesy of this young MUA, is to try out a full face with blush and bronzer for effortlessly easy glam. Well, this definitely is a notch easier to try, as compared to a full face of pink, paired with a prosthetic beating heart, right?

SMOKEY EYES turn 100! Makeup had been deemed inappropriate for many decades and only worn by a certain type of women and stage performers. While some Victorian and Edwardian women did use makeup, it was used very discreetly to remain “socially appropriate”. It wasn’t until the 1920s that makeup came back with a vengeance. At the beginning of the decade, makeup was still on the more cautious, especially the wearing of lipstick. However, by the mid-1920s, makeup was worn openly and applied in public. By the end of the decade, wearing makeup was not only fashionable and respectable, it was de rigueur. Cinema and its leading ladies had a tremendous influence on women. Not only did actresses and their on-screen personas influence the makeup and hair fashions, but they also demonstrated how modern women could now behave. Actresses were seen as glamorous and stylish, consequently, the faces of women such as Clara Bow, Gloria Swanson, Louise Brooks, Greta Garbo were much admired and copied. Popular magazines like Photoplay and Motion Picture Magazine, glorified and gave a new outlook to makeup and style, as well as were full of adverts for various cosmetic products.

Evening and daytime makeup etiquette were considered to be different. That is to say what was acceptable for parties was not acceptable for day wear. For daytime, eyeshadow wouldn’t necessarily have been worn. If it was, it would be very muted. Dark smoky eye, so often seen as essential 1920s, would not have been worn by the average woman during the day. This was more the “film star flapper” look, with eyes made up for the movies, or something kept for parties and evening wear. Eyeshadows came in basic color options, such as grey, black, plum, and brown. The color was applied with a finger to the upper eyelids and blended out to create a soft smoky look. It was largely blended into a rounded shape, rather than winged, and was faded up towards the brow. Most of the tools to create the modern smokey eye were first developed in the 1920s. Taking a cue from the stage performers of the time, makeup artist and cosmetics entrepreneur Helena Rubenstein developed what we now recognize as the smokey eye. Rubenstein, originally from Poland, immigrated to Australia and then the US in 1914. By 1915 she had opened salons in London, Paris and, New York. Helena was known for her style and elegance as a rising socialite and self-made millionaire. Helena studied the smoldering lashes and brows she saw on stage and quietly practiced developing looks on herself and her more daring clients. Soon, the dye used for men’s hair called Mascaro was reborn as mascara and used to darken lashes. With taboos removed from using dark eye makeup, 1920s screen actresses such as Theda Bara revolutionized beauty. Theda was known for what we now know as the smokey eye. Helena Rubinstein pioneered not only the cosmetics industry but also our modern concept of beauty. Giving the world timeless classic black smokey eye look which is universally flattering and effortlessly glamorous.

In the midst of this chaotic year, we’re all searching for a ray of hope to give us a motivational push to start afresh. Sunny Lime undoubtedly reflects an expression of safe escapism. Its confidence, freshness, playfulness and creativity perfectly identify as our theme for this issue of Lucent. Once upon a time, Lime Green was known for not only being difficult to wear, but also being difficult to produce. In fact, the color generally doesn’t show up in fashion history until the 1800s. This explains why it used to be worn exclusively for making a statement. It made an appearance in modern fashion history during times of social change, while arguably hitting its stride in Fall 2018. Something about the playfulness of lime green, makes it a perfect balance of experimentation and seriousness. This color was all over Rihanna’s, as well as Kendall Jenner’s Instagram, though this isn’t the first time Rihanna rocked green eye makeup. Yes! We’re talking about the early 2000’s iconic colorful liner. While looks like these have long existed in beauty editorials and on runways - both platforms for daring makeup, they’re now thriving out in the real world too. The ‘80s are not making an extensive comeback, but somehow lime green has found its way into spring 2020. This was made possible via the internet, with influencers and celebrities repping bright, in your face makeup looks that turn heads or in this case, turn viral.

A Sunny Day in Lime 50

If you wish to learn about dipping your toes into adding sunny lime to your makeup, we’re happy to help!

Create your very own lime look with this step by step below:

1 2

Prime your lids with an eyelid primer of your choice.

Start with a base nude color and blend that onto both lids.

3 4 5

67

Go in with a lime green color on top of the base and start building that up to the amount of color you’d want. Add a darker green to the crease and blend that out towards the brow, to create a ‘cut’. Keep building up the lime green on the lid while darkening the dark green to create a shadow along the crease.

Add more product wherever you deem necessary. Add a lime green shimmer to the lime green base.

8

9

Go in with a pink or maroon shadow on your bottom water line to emphasize the green. (optional)

Blend in all the colours once again to make it all seamless.

-THE MAESTRO WAYHannah Cunningham , a self taught make up artist who made it big on the show “Glow Up”, is full of creativity. She’s known to win hearts and leave people in awe by her intricate looks. Her instagram account “empty_alien” showcases her unique, dystopian, alien -like aesthetic topped off with a brilliant usage of prosthetics. Diving into her imaginative expression, we uncover some fascinating things about this up & coming artist. 58

HANNAH CUNNINGHAM

59

“

I mainly use Instagram and Pinterest to stay abrest of latest trends. I love the kind of cyber, alien, Y2K trend that’s resurfacing, high shine glosses and overemphasised brows.

60 @empty__alien_

1- How was your experience with the show “Glow up”? Now looking back I feel like it was such a valuable experience. I got to do so many things that I would never have had the opportunity to do so before. I kind of got to fast track my experience in professional makeup, and I will always be so thankful for it. It was of course very stressful too, I was so out of my depth and had never done makeup on anyone else before the show, so everything was new to me.

-----------

2- What is the most memorable look that you’ve created, on and off the show?

-----------

I think on the show, it would be the masquerade look because I was so passionate about the meaning behind it, and it was very true to my style. Outside of the show I think the alien baby look I did with the 3 horns, I was particularly proud of that.

3- What’s the best part about being a Makeup Artist, Model and a DJ ? The variety, I suppose are the ways to be creative. But of course because of COVID I haven’t been able to DJ since March and probably won’t until next year!

61

-----------

4- How did Your career begin In “The World Of Beauty”?

-----------

After Glow Up I tried to go back to office work but couldn’t. So I applied to be assistant manager in a makeup retail store and since then have just been building my skill.

5- What’s your daily glam ritual like? At the moment it’s just eyes! I have to wear a mask for the full day at work, so I just try and emphasise my eyebrows and eyes as much as possible.

-----------

6- What are your views on the use of computergenerated imagery to supplement or altogether replace makeup effects?

62

----------

It’s fun! I love a filter. I don’t think it will ever really replace people wanting their makeup done in real life, but I do think it’s impacted how we do our makeup. I know I’ve seen filters before where I’m like, oh wow I want to do my makeup like that!

I think all beauty brands need to go vegan and cruelty free because there’s literally no excuse to still be shoving lipstick in a rabbits eyeball anymore. There also needs to be more responsible packaging, the amount of makeup that comes in plastic containers and non-recyclable materials is still so shocking.

--------------------

7- What are the changes that you want to make or see made in the industry?

-------------------------

63

Beauty is something unachievable and yet something everyone wants. It’s totally unique to the individual and ever-changing. For me beauty is self acceptance and confidence in your individual style. It’s not just something to attract other people, it’s something to embrace within yourself.

-------------------------

64

-------------------------

8- What is beauty to you?

9- Do you think it’s important to have a degree from a Beauty School, to pursue a beauty related profession? I think up to a certain point you don’t need any qualifications, it’s just your own creativity that will get you places. However there are certain jobs you do need qualifications for just because of things like insurance etc, but up until then you can just build on your on skills yourself. That’s what I did, and I’m doing ok!

10- What are the 3 makeup products you can’t live without? Elmers glue, essential facial oils, Concealer

11- Do you ever want to come up with your own makeup line, if so what would it be like? Nooo it’s oversaturated as it is, I don’t really have that kind of entrepreneurial drive in me!

12- What is your biggest achievement that you’ve made in your makeup journey till date? Definitely going on Glow Up!

Painted For The Lords Kim Chi : The Graphic Drag Barbie. 70

Spicing up the world of drag with her makeup artistry, Kim Chi became known to people from her social media presence. She then went on to become a contestant on the 8th season of the world-renowned, Emmy winning reality show - “RuPaul’s Drag Race”. Sang-Young Shin, is a KoreanAmerican Drag queen with the stage name Kim Chi based on the traditional Korean side dish. Kim went to college for Graphic Design before working as an art director and exploring sculpture, fashion design, and painting. She describes herself as a “live-action anime character” whose fashion aesthetic can be described as “Bionic Dolly” with an aura of ultraviolet colours that spew glitter. Kim Chi started doing drag when she first tried it out with some friends for Halloween. However, she was taken by surprise when she landed her first gig the very same night - proving to her how she was doing something right On the 8th season of RPDR, Kim soon confessed to her inability to walk in heels and how it was going to be a challenge to prove herself during the runways. Not letting that come in her way, she overcame all the challenges with her magnificent makeup, exceptional concepts, and exquisite outfits. . As she said when we walked in the first day, “ I came to destroy everyone with my makeup!” and so she did.Being the incomparable talent that she is, she became a fan favourite with many looking up to her.

Courtsey of RuPaul’s Drag Race

Holding her art in high regards, she is known for creating high fashion and eminently conceptual art on her face with the power of her make up. Not once has she disappointed the audience, she always pleases with consistent quality-looks every time. She came up with some of the most exotic looks in the season from the get go. From creating the iconic feisty cat look entirely out of hair, to creating a Madonna inspired look based on one of Madonna’s looks from the Ray of Light era, we were always left stunned. Our favourite anime queen has showcased her conceptual side for the runways but she also always has her iconic ‘Kim Chi look’ ready for the go.All she needs is some glue for the brows, a heavy base face with cutting contour, an iconic pouty lip and lastly, a plethora of colours for her eyes, finished off with many, many false lashes. To seal the deal, a big puffy wig and a glamorous outfit blend together to form one hell of a 7ft tall anime barbie doll! Courtesy of Albert Sanchez

Being a huge fan of SugarPill cosmetics since the start, Kim Chi was approached by them for a collaboration to create a few products on brand with her quirky take on makeup. We had all seen her and now we wanted to be her. Seeing how she had influenced a large number of people towards self-loving and creating, Kim announced that she is coming up with the makeup line; KimChi Chic Beauty; where she partnered with The Trevor Project and will be donating 2% of the proceeds to the organization. She introduced to the world her first ever collection which included an 18-shade, bigKim-personality packed eyeshadow palette along with a series of liquid eye shadows and glosses to ‘top’ it off.

Courtesy of Ash Danielsen

Kim also launched a collaboration with her best friend and fierce drag star, Naomi Smalls. The collection is called, “2 Queens In 1 Desert” which includes an eyeshadow palette, a cheek palette and two liquid eye shadows. This collection offers a range of colours that both the queens have handpicked for the perfect balance between bright and muted tones. Makeup gave her the power and confidence that she never believed she had. Inspired by Pat Mcgrath, Kim Chi has turned the community around with her goofy poise, which before her, was a no-go for drag queens. She has proved how her passion for her art is the key to be successful in this industry. We believe this queen has many realms to further explore, and we’re excited to say the least. What are 3 skincare products you swear by? The ‘Surratt Beauty’ eyelash curler, which I use every single day of my life as it makes me look more awake than coffee does.

RAPID FIRe ALERT !

‘Shani Darden Retinol Reform’, because retinol/ retinoid is a scientifically proven gift to skincare. The ‘Narciso Rodriguez For Her EDT’ - scent is one of our most powerful memory recalling triggers and all of mine associated with this perfume are happy.

Name the lip balm you’re using at the moment. Laneige’s new overnight ‘Lip Sleeping Mask’ in Gummy Bear, which of course, smells like a gummy bear!

We asked Skincare enthusiast and Beauty director at New york magazine

“Kathleen Hou” 10 fun skincare questions. If you could hoard one skincare product, free for life, which one would it be? ‘Sisleya L’Integrale’, because it’s incredibly expensive but so decadent! Also, despite being so rich, it never gives me any milia.

The world is ending in four hours, would you still do your entire skin care routine? Definitely not!

Pick one - morning skin care routine or night time skincare routine & Why? Nighttime. I can sometimes forget to do my morning routine so it becomes more like an 11 AM or afternoon routine. But I never forget to do my nighttime routine. It’s also a good way to unwind.

How many steps do your skin care routines have? (day and night) Day: Eye cream, toner, Vitamin C, moisturizer and sunscreen. Night: Double cleanse, toner, retinol, moisturizer and eye cream.

A face mask that can never go wrong? ‘Fresh’s Umbrian Clay Mask’, since it not only zaps zits but also mosquito bites.

RAPID FIRe ALERT !

Mi Anne-Chan Beauty journalist at Refinery, video editor at conde nast and the most stylish makeup guru answers our 10 important skincare questions ever so rapidly

What are 3 skincare products you swear by? Renee Rouleau Anti Bump Solution - This is an amazing acne product for anyone who deals with those painful, cystic acne bumps. The main active ingredient is lactic acid, a gentle acid that penetrates deep into the pores. It is amazing. I never run out because I always have back ups. It’s that good! Naturopathica Honey Cleansing Balm - I am a huge proponent of cleansing balms and oil cleansers as a first step in a nightly double cleanse. I wear exclusively waterproof mascaras so I need a powerful oil to cut through all that product. This balm is silky, luxurious, and removes makeup easily without hurting my eyes. Bite Agave Lip Mask - This is another product I always have on rotation. It’s a thick lip mask that I use as my nightly lip balm. It’s incredible for the winter to keep chapped, flakey lips in check, but I honestly use it year-round. Bite has since come out with a litany of additional products in the “Agave” range but the original lip mask is hands-down my favorite.

Name the lip balm you’re using at the moment. The lip mask above! 92

Pick one- morning skin care routine or night time skincare routine & Why? Honestly I would never do just one! SPF is too important in the morning and a good, powerful serum (something with retinol or acids) is a must for me at night! If I had to suggest one to someone else though, I’d say morning so you can wear SPF (every single day, even in the winter!)

A face mask that can never go wrong? Can I choose a face tool instead? I keep a gua sha facial tool by my bed so I can give myself a gentle facial massage while watching Netflix or reading. The tool itself is used to “scrape” the face to improve circulation and drain lymph. It’s amazing for depuffing the face and “perking” up the skin because it brings blood to the surface of the skin. I highly recommend it not just because it’s relaxing, but because it gives the face a mini contour! Just make sure to apply a face cream or oil underneath so you aren’t tugging at your skin.

If you could hoard one skincare product, free for life, which one would it be? Renee Rouleau Anti Bump Solution! I’m telling you, it’s amazing.

You have a chance to make your own skin care brand, What’s its name and why? As of right now, I actually don’t think I’d launch my own brand. I think there’s so much already out there in the beauty industry that it’s already getting so overwhelming and rife with over-consumption (I definitely struggle with my role in it a lot!). I love consulting with brands though to help them reevaluate their marketing and business strategies to be more inclusive, sustainable, and forward-thinking!

What’s the craziest thing you’ve done as a skincare enthusiast? I got a vagina facial once - well, really it was a “vulva” facial. It sounds crazy, but it’s actually one of the most practical treatments I’ve ever received. Essentially, an aesthetician gently and professionally helps remove ingrown hairs from your bikini line!

A skin care product that’s always in your purse? Lip balm! Right now my purse lip balm is the liquid lip balm from Saie.

The world is ending in four hours, would you still do your entire skin care routine? Nah, at that point I’d probably just want to be with loved ones and watch the world burn as relaxed and happy as possible.

How many steps do your skin care processes have (day and night)? Night is 5 (double cleanse, toner, serum, moisturizer) and day is 3! ( I usually wash with just water in the AM unless I woke up really sweaty, then just toner, serum, and SPF).

An introduction to Fenty Skin

O

ne would be pleaantly surprised to hear that Fenty has joined the skincare bandwagon with a punctilious drop that consists of the three holy grail essentials of skincare. A cream based cleanser, a refining toner serum (or as they call it (“fat water”) and an SPF 30 broad spectrum sunscreen, all of which come in recyclable packaging! Though some folk may complain that the drop was not broad enough, one does have to admit How much more complicated would you want your routine to get? Let’s dive a little more:

Fenty Skin Total Cleanser Remove-It-All Cleanser (145ml - ₹ 1,840)

T

96

he first thing you’d notice off the bat while using this, would be the well thought out ergonomics applied here with a screw twist top, where you twist the cap to open and squeeze to extract product. This cleanser is a cream based one that foams well with only little product, which is great for both your face as well as your pocket. It’s also a cleanser cum makeup remover. Considering other such products always include harsh chemicals that strip your skin off of essential oils leaving it dry and damaged, hear this out - the Fenty cleanser is also moisturising and easy on your skin! It also comes with green tea extracts to combat redness. The only downside is a lack of fragrance options if that’s something you are particular about.

Fat Water Pore-Refining Toner Serum (150ml - ₹ 2,060)

T

his product is a toner-Serum that has a lightweight yet hydrating effect on the skin. It effectively refines enlarged pore appearance and reduces dark spots with the help of ingredients like Niacinamide (a form of vitamin B3) and vitamin C. Just like the cleanser, this also has a fragrance a pleasant “sweet blend of cherry and sunkissed fig”. One downside however, would be the witch hazel - an astringent that may seem to have positive results for clearing some forms of acne, but negative effects for those prone to redness, dryness, eczema or rosacea.

Hydra Vizor Invisible Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF30 Sunscreen ((50ml - ₹ 2,575)

F

enty as a brand hyper stresses on the use of sunscreen and so they were bound to come out with one in their first launch. The formula is lightweight as well as white residue resistant, which is not a uncommon downside of other mineral sunscreens. The sunscreen consists of Avobenzone, Homosalate and Octisalate which are all effective UVA & UVB filters. It also contains Safflower seed oil which fights free radicals that are constantly present in the atmosphere and Gluconolactone, a mild exfoliant. The best part about this sunscreen is its packaging that’s refillable and is made up of two layers - one of which can be replaced every time the product runs out. Though it’s not going to solve the question of sustainability, it definitely adds a little to the solution with this reusability.

Catwalks & Cat-eyes Here’s one for all the fashion enthusiasts out there as we talk about the make up looks from the Marc Jacobs NYFW spring summer show. This show was definitely more of a theatrical performance than a standard runway event and we have no complaints! The models displayed youthful outfits with cheerful colours through the show, which overall exuded a very fun and relaxed vibe. Gigi, we see you! There were a total 60 unique makeup looks all of which were created by the legendary Pat McGrath. Diving into some makeup looks from the show ,one may notice that there were specific references like Jane Fonda in “Klute,” or even Shelley Duvall.

Marc Jacobs Spring Summer RTW 2020

Other looks featured ethereal creatures bedecked in holographic cellophane and mermaid waves. They did justice to seamlessly serving us looks from three different eras - the ‘70s, the 80’s as well as 2020’s, all in one single show.

S/S RTW 2020

These varied looks included some subtle nudes, smokey eyes, turquoise liner, star sequins, glitters; the list goes on. A common trend amongst shows like ‘’Euphoria ‘’ TV show mood, was also featured -a look with cerulean under-eye shadow and a pistachio green and blue, holographic foil lid look.

The Marc Jacobs Way ! The sheer amount of cosmetics on hand to pull these off has to be staggering, but there were a few looks with common elements that are achievable by us all with products like - Marc Jacobs Beauty and the O!Mega Glaze Foil Luminizer. Since the eyes were oh so bold, the lip was kept minimally natural looking with [Le Marc Lip Creamâ] lipsticks and a lot of shiny gloss.

It’s All about the Details! Red-Hot! Bringing Jacob’s utopian vision to life, was ‘Mother.’ The striking red lip with a layer of glitter for that extra oomph factor is the focus point of this otherwise minimal look. Perfect for the effortlessly chic vision that we all love! Marc Jacobs S /S RTW 2020

We C-U! Dazzling copper cat eyes, topped with star sequined glitter are aimed to please the diva in us all. Here, the eyes really did all the talking and were complemented with some simple glossy lips.

Marc Jacobs S /S RTW 2020

Fairytopia To perfectly match the beautiful delicacy of the perfectly contrasting shades of lavender and butter yellow, this makeup look was all about a delicate charm. Eyes adorned with the exact match of lavender, further exemplified by butterfly-esque extravagant liner gave us all the feels.

Playdate Marc Jacobs surely knows how to add some fantasy into the world. This alluring crimson outfit was complemented with large-doll-like eyes. White kohl (kajal) in the waterline and dramatically extensive lashes did just the trick! Finished off with some classic lipgloss, this is one look we can’t ignore!

Au Naturelle Focusing on the common analogy, “less is more”, this 90’s inspired look was the epitome of natural beauty with effortless glow. Dewy skin and glossed lips, we have no reason to complain.

According to several studies, parabens are endocrine disruptors that mimic estrogen, which leads to an increased chance of developing breast cancer, or skin cancer, and decreased sperm count. About 99% of all cancerous breast tumors contained parabens. As cosmetic products are used daily over long periods, lifetime exposure to parabens is definitely a matter of concern. Parabens are preservatives found in everything from soap to lotion to makeup. If it has water in it, it probably has a paraben to keep it from growing bacteria. Needless to say, it is recommended to keep an eye out for not only products but also ingredients with parabens.

Petroleum distillates is a clear, colorless liquid. Within cosmetics and personal care products, it is commonly found in makeup, hair, nail, and skincare products. These distillates are used to dissolve other substances, usually liquids. Petroleum-extracted ingredients used in cosmetics are often contaminated with cancer-causing impurities and are possible human carcinogens. They are also known to cause contact dermatitis. This is mainly because they are produced in oil refineries at the same time as automobile fuel, heating oil, and chemical feed.

Found in: mascara, makeup, hair and nail products

Petroleum distillates SLS has been shown to cause or contribute to skin irritation, canker sores, disruption of the skin’s natural barrier function and oil balance, and eye damage. It is also widely believed to be a major contributor to acne around the mouth and chin because it clogs pores. SLS/SLES are foaming agents used in a slew of personal care products, including skincare and cosmetics, shampoo, and toothpaste. They are surfactants that can cause skin irritation or trigger allergies.

Ingredients to

steer clear off One may have noticed those tiny plastic beads in face or lip scrubs and exfoliating washes. Those are made from polyethylene (used because they’re gentler on the skin than natural exfoliators like walnut shells). Polyethylene has been noted as a skin irritant and should never be used on broken skin. These beads are also not big enough to be filtered by our sewage systems, meaning they can collect pollutants and travel into waterways, where they’re consumed by fish and marine animals. So not only is it harmful to your skin and personal health, but also the environment at large.

Found in: scrubs, body wash, makeup, toothpaste

Fragrances can contain hormone disruptors and are among the top 5 allergens in the world. Almost every single conventional skincare and cosmetic product (even “unscented” ones) contains artificial fragrances. Manufacturers aren’t legally obligated to reveal what’s actually in their fragrances, so you’ll simply see a seemingly innocent mention of ‘Fragrance’ or ‘Parfum’ on the ingredients list, when it could be a cocktail of carcinogens, allergens, endocrine disruptors, and irritants. More detailed studies are not easily possible or accessible as the fragrance is proprietary, but many ae known to suffer from reactions to fragrances.
