Definition Prenatal alcohol use includes women who selfreported consumption of alcohol during the last 3 months of their pregnancy. Use of alcohol during pregnancy can result in miscarriage, stillbirth, and adverse physical and neurological problems known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD).15 Prenatal alcohol use is a leading preventable cause of birth defects and mental retardation.16

Summary » In 2019, 94.4% of Alaska Native mothers reported no alcohol use during the last 3 months of their pregnancy. » Between 2004 and 2019, the percent of Alaska Native mothers consuming no alcohol in the last three months of pregnancy appeared to remain relatively stable.
