Letter from the Board Chair & President and CEO Good evening and welcome to our first-ever virtual Spring Fundraiser! On behalf of the Board and Museum staff, we extend our thanks to Event Co-Chairs, Yana Mintskovsky and Kimberly Ross, for successfully orchestrating this year’s event. Along with the Honorary Co-Chairs, Honorary Committee, and Host Committee, they worked tirelessly to gather support for this important event. We thank you all for your generosity and for helping us exceed the budgeted goal for this critical fundraiser. We are grateful for our amazing Museum team. Tremendous thanks to Dr. Sara Abosch Jacobson, Dr. Charlotte Decoster, Felicia Williamson, and Max Rosenzweig. A huge thank you to Barbara Acuña-Taylor and Miles Emerson, who curated the Survivor testimonies featured tonight and produced this project in collaboration with On-Air Media. Music in the Camps is an original documentary film featuring Holocaust Survivor testimonies about how the power of music gave them the strength to survive and spread hope to fellow prisoners. This film would not be possible without the help of our incredible community partners. We extend our deepest gratitude to our friends at On-Air Media, the USC Shoah Foundation, The Defiant Requiem Foundation, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, 7th Art Releasing, the Aronson Cello Festival, and the University of Western Ontario. Help us thank these partners by learning more about their work and by supporting their missions. Finally, we are honored to feature a performance by Dallas Symphony Orchestra musicians tonight. Christopher Adkins, DSO Principal Cellist, personally arranged a special performance – one of the first pieces he was taught by his cello instructor Lev Aronson, a Dallas Holocaust Survivor who held the same DSO Principal Chair position for more than 20 years. Our sincere thanks to Kim Noltemy, DSO President and CEO, Chris, and his talented ensemble for being part of our event. We hope you enjoy their beautiful performance. We are living in difficult and troubling times. Now, more than ever, we are committed to our mission to teach the history of the Holocaust and advance human rights to combat prejudice, hatred, and indifference. Thank you for investing in this important work and helping us inspire Upstanders. With gratitude, Mary Pat Higgins President and CEO 1

You mustn’t think in terms of a proper orchestra. I mean, there were people with mandolins and guitars and a few violins and a couple of accordions … that sort of thing.

By honoring the defiance and bravery of the prisoners in the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp (Terezín) during World War II, performances by The Defiant Requiem Foundation show the role that music and art play in confronting contemporary challenges of increased Holocaust ignorance, Holocaust denial, and antisemitism. The Defiant Requiem Foundation strives to promote awareness and understanding of the dangers of antisemitism, Holocaust ignorance and denial, by presenting the singular story, and one with universal application, of Rafael Schächter and prisoners in the Terezín Concentration Camp during the Holocaust who used music and art as an act of defiance to maintain their humanity, dignity, hope, and inspiration. The story of a man who became a carrier of culture.
As a young man, Lev Aronson dreamed of becoming an international soloist like his mentor, the renowned cellist Gregor Piatigorsky.
History had other plans. After surviving the Holocaust, Lev Aronson emigrated to the United States where he earned the post of principal cellist of the Dallas Symphony. He became one of the most significant cello pedagogues in modern history mentoring Lynn Harrell, John Sharp, Christopher Adkins, Brian Thornton, and many others. Today, we honor his life, teachings, philosophy, students and the enduring power of classical music. The Aronson Cello Festival celebrates its Seventh Season after launching an innovative program “Women and Classical Music” and an exclusive film series about the life of Lev Aronson directed by Emmy Award winning storyteller Ty Kim.
