FULL PROGRAM PACKAGE Understanding Personal Choice and Bias (3 hours) What?
Using a historical framework, this training encourages participants to discuss the concept of choice and implicit bias in their profession. The program explores the role and impact of professionals during the Holocaust and then challenges participants to reflect upon their professional, ethical, and personal responsibilities in our society.
Who?
Health, legal, and business professionals. Suggested class size is 40 people, but programs can be customized to meet your unique needs.
How?
Virtual live presentation which includes a historical lecture, interactive historical analysis presentation, and an activity exploring unconscious bias.
Full Training Schedule (3 hours) • Virtual Check-in & Welcome (5 minutes) • Program Overview: Why are we here today? (10 minutes) Participants are introduced to the goals of the program. Through the lens of Holocaust history, the program will look at the slippery slope of human behavior in its extremes. How can you learn from this history and how do professional choices and unconscious bias impact your role as a professional today? • Introduction to Holocaust History: Rise of Nazism Exhibition Film (15 minutes) This exclusive film from the Museum’s permanent exhibition introduces participants to basic facts for understanding the Nazi rise to power. • Holocaust History and Complicity (45 minutes) Join one of our Museum historians for a short lecture on Holocaust history and the complicity of ordinary professionals in the genocide against the Jews. • Historical Analysis Presentation (45 minutes) This presentation uses images from Nazi Germany to spur discussion on the role of professionals during the Holocaust. Through an interactive presentation, participants will analyze the slippery slope of human behavior in their profession. The impact of personal and professional choices will also be discussed. • Choice and Bias in Your Profession (1 hour) This activity uses visual thinking strategies as participants explore unconscious bias. Participants are encouraged to discuss how unconscious bias impacts their professions and their roles in the community.

• Holocaust History and Complicity (1 to 1.5 hours) Join one of our Museum historians for a short lecture on Holocaust history and the complicity of ordinary professionals in the genocide against the Jews. This lecture encourages participants to use this history to reflect on the personal and professional choices in their careers. • Uncovering Dallas Civil Rights (1 hour) You likely learned about the national civil rights movement, but what about Dallas? Do you know the history of civil rights in our community? Join one of our Museum Educators for a lecture on the development of the civil rights movement in Dallas. View a historical film and hear directly from local civil rights leaders. Then, wrap up with a discussion on the importance of knowing local civil rights history. • What is an Upstander? (30 minutes – 1 hour) Join our Museum Educators in an interactive exploration of Upstander and bystander behavior. This presentation breaks down the stereotypical views of these human behaviors through historical examples. Participants are asked to reflect on their choices and encouraged to take steps toward Upstander behavior. • Understanding Unconscious Bias (1 hour) This activity uses visual thinking strategies as participants explore unconscious bias. Participants are encouraged to discuss how unconscious bias impacts their professions and their roles in the community. • Texas Upstanders: A Diverse Group (1- 1.5 hour) Join our Museum Educators to learn about 27 diverse Upstanders who stood up for rights in Texas. Participants select three Upstanders for a deep-dive exploration of their background, actions and lasting impact on our community. The program culminates with an analysis of characteristics that define Upstanders. • Slippery Slope during the Holocaust (45 minutes – 1 hour) This historical analysis presentation uses images from Nazi Germany to inspire discussion on the role of professionals during the Holocaust. Through an interactive presentation, participants will analyze the slippery slope of human behavior in their profession, and the impact of personal and professional choices.
