A2 Coursework Ancillary Texts Planning – Music If you are doing a music video you have to produce the following ancillary texts to compliment your film: 1. a cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package); 2. a magazine advertisement for the digipak (CD/DVD package). To do this you will need to research the conventions of these types of texts. Follow the instructions below to help you with your planning.

image is very important to the branding of the artist, pick an artist (it can be the one you have used for the video, or someone similar) and analyse the marketing campaign for their latest release, look at choice of font, colour and image and what they all connote. (This bit of research is important for both ancillary tasks.) Do a set of font tests for your digipak and advert. These should be consistent across the marketing package. Research the difference between digipaks and CD cases. Discuss why you think there is more value put on a digipak. You will need to design a 6 panelled case. Come up with a list of things you are going to need to include in your promotional package. Look at how star image is used – see if you can come up with a set of ‘rules’ for the main photo of your digipak. You will have to use these rules when photographing your ‘star’. Take an already existing digipak and copy it on Photoshop, copying everything you can.

6. Investigate the how the sales of CDs have changed in the last five years. Look at how artists are now making most of their money. 7. Do a flat plan of your digipak (the paper equivalent of a storyboard) work out the layout you want, and plan the type of photos you need to take of your star. Digipak templates are available from Mrs B. 8. Begin mocking up your digipak.

Digipak/CD/Album adverts: 1. Research the conventions of CD advertising. Look at music

advertising from the genre your music video is and come up with a list of conventions that you need to get right. Choose one advert and do a detailed analysis of it (this can be done with an image of the cover and arrows etc.) 2. Choose an advert and copy it on Photoshop, copying everything you can. 3. Investigate how important the print advert is the promotion of the film.

4. Do a flat plan of your advert, work out the layout you want, and plan the type of photos you need to take of your star.

5. Begin mocking up your advert.
