Our School Motto is.. ‘To dream, to strive, to achieve, to celebrate, with God as our Guide.’ In May 2017, the Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS) judged St Alfege’s to be an outstanding church school. We provide a stimulating environment where children are encouraged ‘to strive for

their dreams’ through work and play, and go on to secondary education equipped and ready academically, socially and spiritually.

Admissions St Alfege with St Peter’s Primary School is a one-form entry Church of England ( Voluntary Aided) Primary School for children aged 3-11 years of age. The Nursery can accommodate up to 60 pupils. Most children attend parttime, either am or pm. There are a few full time places, which are allocated to those eligible for thirty hours under the Government's new scheme. If spaces are available, it may be possible to pay for additional hours. If you wish to enrol your child, please download a Supplementary Application Form from www.stalfegeschool.org.uk. For the main school, you will also need to apply on-line via www.royalgreenwich.gov.uk/admissions.

The School Day & Uniform The school day starts at 8.45 am and ends at 3.30 pm. At St Alfege’s all children are proud to wear school uniform. This consists of a school sweatshirt or cardigan in jade green, white shirt and grey trousers or a grey skirt and black school shoes. In summer children may wear a green check dress, or a green T-shirt or a white shirt.

Lunch Arrangements Lunchtime at St Alfege’s is an important and enjoyable part of our day. Many children comment on the very high standard of our school dinners, which are healthy and diverse and are prepared on the premises. There is always a vegetarian option and special dietary meals can be arranged if there are medical or religious reasons.

" We View our d i versity as a strength to be celebrated.”

Enjoying & Achieving Our curriculum has been developed specifically with our children in mind, taking account of their prior experiences, their interests, our Christian purpose and the ethos of inclusion. It aims to engage, enthuse and challenge children. It is broad and balanced, and provides children with the necessary knowledge and skills to prepare them for life in modern Britain. We have four key drivers that shape our curriculum:

• • • •

Spirituality Moral awareness Problem solving Opportunities

Foundation Stage Nursery and Reception classes follow the Early Years Foundation Stage framework, which has seven areas of learning and development: •

Communication and language

Physical development

Personal, social and emotional development

“I a m a l w a y s impressed with how polite and well-mannered the c h i l d r e n ar e”

Literacy

Mathematics

Understanding the world

Expressive arts and design

Children enjoy finding out more about the world around them through a variety of practical and fun activities. Independent child-initiated learning is also an important part of every child’s day. Play is essential for children’s development, building their confidence as they learn to explore, to think about problems, and to relate to others. Children learn by leading their own play, and by taking part in play which is guided by adults.

The Primary Curriculum We promote high standards in reading, writing and mathematics, using excellent quality literature, so that children develop a love of reading and writing. We have structured programmes to teach phonics, reading, spelling, grammar and comprehension skills, based on ‘Letters and Sounds,’ ‘Power of Reading’ and ‘ Talk for Writing.’ In mathematics, basic concepts, skills and operations are taught and practised with opportunities for creative, investigative and problem-solving activities. Children use logical reasoning and real life situations. Children learn that problems may be solved in more than one way thus fostering a culture of perseverance. Physical Education has a positive influence on the health and well-being of the children, improving their concentration, attitude and academic achievement. Through Physical Education, we aim to ensure that all pupils:

Arts Enrichment Programme The school has the Arts Mark Award. Once a week children in the school have access to our Arts Enrichment Programme, which is led by specialists in music, dance, art and design, and Spanish and Spanish culture.

School trips & visits At St Alfege’s we encourage the children to participate in a range of trips and visits to places of educational interest. These visits are linked to the curriculum and include museums, galleries and theatres. Older children have the opportunity to spend some time on a residential school journey where they take part in a variety of outdoor adventure and teambuilding activities.

Home learning At St Alfege’s we value working in partnership with parents and carers and we feel that home learning is integral to every child’s development. Reading at home is an essential element in developing children’s reading skills and love of books. From Year 1, children take home spellings and number facts to learn weekly. Children are also encouraged to practise the skills they have learned at school through practical activities at home.

Extended Schools Breakfast Club Breakfast Club runs from 8.00 am to 8.45 pm. This gives the children a good start to the day. As well as breakfast, the children enjoy playing games and other activities. After School Clubs We offer a range of after school clubs which are partly funded by Pupil Premium. These are run by school staff, coaches and other agencies who use our school as a base. Recently these have included arts and crafts, photography, construction club, football, gymnastics, basketball, Safari Beats, gardening, and dance. After School Care St Alfege is pleased to work in collaboration with MJS Simply-Play Limited, an independent company, who provide after school care for children at St Alfege’s and other local schools. www.stalfegeschool.org.uk

INVOLVING PARENTS & CARERS We believe in working in partnership to achieve the best outcomes for our children. We welcome all parents and carers involvement in the school and offer many different opportunities for parents to be involved. Throughout the year we organize a range of events for children and their families to enjoy together. In the past these have included: • The Pyjama Party focusing on bed-time reading for pleasure • Celebration Saturday, providing an opportunity for parents to experience a day at school with their children • International Day and Evening where children and families share and celebrate their cultural heritage • Curriculum Workshops throughout the year, covering a range of areas to inform and help parents support their children at home.

" We Are impressed With the sense of community And care provided By the school.”
