Textiles Cycle Route LESSON 1
Introduction
Situation Brompton is a specialist bicycle manufacturer based in Brentford, West London. They are very well known for making high quality folding bicycles. As the cost of petrol increases, with there being more cars on the road, and people’s desire to be more sustainable (environmentally friendly), more and more people are choosing to cycle rather than using a car.
Design Brief To design and make a bicycle accessory that fits with Brompton’s philosophy of ‘freedom and independence’. You will have six lessons to design and make your product; you can use a range of materials including plastics, card etc. The product needs to be unique and should enhance the experience of riding a Brompton bicycle; it could make it safer, more comfortable or more enjoyable.
As Brompton makes folding bicycles which can be easily carried on a bus or train, a lot of people are choosing to buy a Brompton bicycle rather than any other make. To try to convince even more people to buy a Brompton the company wants to create a unique accessory for their bicycles that no other bicycle manufacturer offers.

Generating Ideas
You have learnt a lot about Brompton and now it’s time to think about accessories that you could design. Below produce a mind map of all of the possible accessories that you could design to meet the situation and design brief.
From all the products I have thought of above I have decided that I will design

Textiles Cycle Route Specification
LESSON 1
A specification is a list of things that your product has to do. Write at least one point for each of the headings below. What criteria must your product meet in each of these areas?
Size
How big will it be?
Materials
What will it be made of?
Cost /Price
How much will your target market buy it for?
Function (use)
What does your product have to be able to do?
Aesthetics (look like)
Ergonomics
What will it look like? What kind of texture will it have?
Does it need to fit the user’s hand? be comfortable?

Homework
As all good designers do, you will create a mood board and carry out some research into your chosen product. If you do your homework well it should take you about 11/2 hours to do, so remember to leave yourself plenty of time!
My Mood Board An inspirational mood board is something that good designers can use to help them come up with a design for their product. It is a collection of images, shapes, textures and colours that the designer thinks are interesting and are used as a starting point to design their product.

Existing Product Research I am researching existing
(product).
All good designers carry out research before they design their product. Designers research what products of the type they are designing exist already. The research also examines the way the object looks, the way it works and the materials it has been made from. [include notes on aesthetics (how they look), function (how they work) and materials (what they are made from)]

LESSON 2
Homework – Final Design
You should have been shown an example of what a final design drawing can look like. You should think about what people have said about your initial ideas and what you have learnt by doing your card model before you produce your final design.
Don’t Forget!
To use colour, measurements, and notes explaining what materials you will use and how you will make it.

Production Planning
Self-Target Setting You have a very short space of time to make your product. To be sure that you can get all of it done, write down three things you will do to make sure you work as efficiently as possible. 1. 2. 3. Did you meet your targets? How or why? What could you have done better? WWW

Homework – Gantt Chart
A Gantt Chart is used by designers to help plan their time when they are designing and making their product. You will make one for the making of your product below:

At the beginning of the lesson today, you were shown an example of two kettles and you discussed the issues about their designs. Some of the issues were about technical problems with their design. You should look at your product and think about one problem you have with it, or one problem the end user may have with it. Record it here. My problem is...

Updating Production Plan Next lesson you will have 30–40 minutes to complete your product. You will probably need to change how you were originally planning on using your time in the last lesson. Look back at your Gantt Chart and modify your time plan for lesson 6 on the table below so that you can get everything finished on time. Record the new version below: Lesson 3
