From the Editor’s Desk Brent Manley Everything you ever wanted to learn about yourself you can learn in 26.2 miles.

5K in Houston without training for it (I wouldn’t have known what to do if I had thought about training). My 5K debut was pitiful, but I achieved my goal of running all the way. I moved to Memphis in 1989 and soon discovered MRTC and other races. I still wasn’t much of a runner, but I really enjoyed the local races. When, in 1996, I decided to try a marathon, I got a book by running guru Jeff Galloway and followed the regimen for those whose only marathon goal is finishing. Training was in the summer and it was tough going at times in the heat and humidity. One day, I came home without finishing my scheduled 15-mile run and Donna, my wife, asked ominously, “How are you going to run a marathon if you can’t even do 15 miles?” I didn’t have an answer for that except to keep trying. I believe the hot-weather training helped me get through my first marathon. On race day, there was rain and the temperature was in the low 40s, a big improvement over what I had endured that summer. At the start line, I was nervous because I had asked myself a few times in the weeks leading up to the race, “What if I can’t do it?” After about 10 minutes of running, I relaxed because I knew at that point that I was going to get to the finish line. My time of 4:52 is not impressive, but I was elated to have made it to the finish line, although I do remember running on Riverside Drive, heading for the Pyramid, where the finish line was set up, and thinking that the more I ran the farther away the Pyramid got. The experience meant so much to me that I like to relive it, in a way, through the stories of other first-timers. Something to take with you into the new year: “26.2 – It’s more than a distance. It’s desire, determination and dedication.”

— Lori Culnane

I don’t usually do this, but I want to recommend an article in this issue (see page 9). It’s this issue’s cover story, by Ken Graham, who ran his first marathon on Dec. 7. With Ken was his wife, Sarah, also running her first marathon. It’s a well written story about how the Grahams decided to take the marathon plunge, how they prepared and how they made it to the finish line in the 2019 St. Jude Memphis Marathon. Sarah and Ken deserve credit for persevering when the going got tough, which it usually does even for the best runners. If you have a marathon or two under your belt, you can probably relate to some of the wisdom shared over the years by running philosophers. The following comes from Joe Henderson: “You can never be sure. That’s what makes the marathon both fearsome and fascinating. The deeper you go into the unknown, the more uncertain you become. But then you finish. And you wonder, ‘How did I do that?’ This question compels you to keep making the journey from the usual to the magical.” I ran my first marathon just to see if I could do it. I had started running in about 1984. I was working for the Houston Post newspaper and the Olympic torch was being carried by a group of runners (on foot) from the East Coast all the way to the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. I was covering the crosscountry run for the Post and riding in a bus for a short time accompanying the runners. I was inspired by the spectacle to try running. Not long after that, I ran a

A Message from the President By Steve Spakes I mentioned in last month’s message that MRTC Board member Wain Rubenstein was to be inducted onto the Memphis Amateur Sports Hall of fame. As mentioned, Wain had been an MRTC Board member since 1991 and race director for the St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend for 19 years. The induction was held Dec. 2 and it was an honor to attend. There were 12 inductees with very impressive histories in various sports. I noticed from the event program Wain Rubenstein with his Memphis Amateur that Lawson Sports Hall of Fame plaque. Thornton was awarded in a previous year for distance running. And of course, the St. Jude Memphis Marathon

was held Saturday, Dec. 7 (always the first Saturday in December). The race raised over $12 million and, according to Kevin Kane, President & CEO of the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau, generated a gross of around $35 million for local businesses. Almost all of our board members are involved with this event with, as mentioned above, Wain being the race director and Rob Hunter the assistant race director and the USATF course measurer. MRTC had a cheer station near the 22mile mark and we certainly had a good day encouraging the participants. An MRTC shout out to Thunder Racing! They were manning the hydration station at the 22-mile mark and they know how to have a good time. Great music, awesome street artwork and tremendous energy. Another MRTC shout out to Jessica Suzore, former board member and MRTC Life Member. She’s been in charge of the Elite Athletes for 13 years. Great job! Finally, a huge MRTC shout out to all the SJMM participants for enduring packet pick-up at the Landers Center. Whew! Good job!

At the 22-mile mark, MRTC and Thunder Racing provided hydration and encouragement for runners in the St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend events.

Sue Kessler - 2019 St. Jude Hero Among Us Award winner

Organizing a marathon is never easy, especially a race of the size and significance of the St. Jude Memphis Marathon. Add in some other races – half marathon, 10K and 5K – and you get the St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend, the biggest event in town on Saturday, Dec. 7, when 26,000 participants – including more than 7, 200 St. Jude Heroes – ran their respective races, helping to raise more than $12 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Race organizers expected 40,000 spectators to watch the action and cheer for the competitors. With the exception of the kids’ marathon, the race routes took runners on a tour of Memphis, including through the hospital’s campus to truly bring the mission to life firsthand alongside many of the hospital’s patients and their families. Two of the runners had special days. Sue Kessler (see page 7), ran her 100th marathon and, by the end of 2019, will have run at least one mile a day for the past 20 years. Adam Higham, a 34-year-old Collierville resident, topped all runners with a course-record finish time of 2:29:17. Tia Stone, 41, of Searcy AR, logged the best time among female marathoners, finishing in 2:58:20. See page 8 for a list of top finishers. A list of Memphis-area finishers can be found on page 16. Adam Higham

From ALSAC/St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital At a press conference two days before the St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend, Sue Kessler was honored as the 2019 St. Jude Hero Among Us, an annual recognition of a St. Jude Hero who has gone above and beyond for St. Jude and the children who are treated there. What follows is more about the latest Hero Among Us honoree: Sue Kessler is no stranger to running. The end of 2019 will signify Sue running at least one mile every single day for the past 20 years, as well as her 100th marathon upon completion of St. Jude Memphis Marathon, which she accomplished Sue Kessler in 4:47:12. The 49-year-old from Evanston IL began running as a St. Jude Hero in 2016 and has since raised more than $73,000 for the kids of St. Jude. Her participation as a St. Jude Hero has spanned eight races, but her impact on the hospital goes much farther. Sue’s energy and passion for the mission led to further involvement as an ambassador, where she volunteers her time to help raise awareness for the hospital, recruit new St. Jude Heroes, encourage her fellow fundraisers and more. Her journey as a St. Jude Hero has taken her 4

Cover story: Our First Last Marathon By Ken Graham A half marathon is not easy. Still, Sarah and I have been very happy at the back of the pack through numerous road race series races and St. Jude half marathons since 2012. Heck, one year at St. Jude, we even did the 5K and rolled right into the half on a challenge from a friend who shall remain nameless (Brad). That 16.3-mile day was the longest we’d run at once until the Sylamore 25K, 2017 edition, where my Garmin recorded 17.14 miles. Wrong or not, I’ll take it. That was also one of the few times Sylamore was run in rainy, muddy, waist-deep creek conditions, too. Last time we’re doing that again until the next time we do. During the road race series over the years, I generally tried to run the entire distance, but in 2018 we were training more consistently following Garmin training plans and noticed we were getting a little faster with better endurance. When we did training runs together, talk turned to possibility of a marathon. Can we make the cutoff (six hours at the time)? Not at our current paces. We decided to make a purposeful push to get our half time down or close to 2:30:00. If we could do that, it would give us some room to make the cutoff over the full distance. By half No. 2, I set a 2:37:49 PR, and Sarah a 2:49:55 where we were normally 3+ hour finishers. Without realizing it, I even pushed myself to a “Most Improved Male” award for the series. The decision was made: St. Jude Memphis Marathon 2019 for our first. The training was going to have to be on point. The scheduled training plans had helped us stay on track and in a routine, but we still felt we needed some personal guidance for this

The author and his wife in Mid-Town just after passing the 22-mile mark. undertaking. The search for a coach didn’t last long. We knew Eling Gaines already and her reputation as a triathlon coach. We asked her about marathon training and off we went, officially starting in June 2019. Wanting to focus on the training and participate in the Breakaway group runs, we decided to skip the RRS this year. With Eling’s guidance on training and nutrition, we grew leaps and bounds over our expectations for endurance capability, even setting three consecutive distance PRs during training in the run up to the start of taper. Avoiding injury and any significant illness during training, race-day time drew close. The last 7

long run was affectionately known as “only eight miles.” We had watched the weather forecast closely the last couple of weeks hoping for no surprises. We ran our 2013 half in Nashville after the great ice cancellation got us a very generous and appreciated registration transfer, and last year’s heat wave dashed many PR hopes. On race morning, the forecast has held up. No rain, around 40 at the start, with a high in the low 50s. Perfect. We find a parking spot down Beale within a mile of the start and make the chilly walk to the park, passing the 26-mile marker as we go. We take a picture with it. The jokes start, “can’t wait to see that again,” “I’m gonna hug it next time.” … We get to the park entrance just as the 5K and 10K The Grahams took a selfie after finishing their first marathon together. are about to start. I have a tendency to go out a little fast and then settle in, dragging Sarah with me. It’s usually worse in a race crowd. First mile is a little quick, but I keep it reined in. Our coach worked us up to a 9/1 run-walk interval, but we set our watches with a 4/1 timer. We just walked on the even intervals and could easily drop to 4/1 later when needed. With my handy dandy laminated pace sheet, I keep tabs at the mile markers to make sure we stay ahead of the cutoff. The first half goes really well. We’re both feeling good and running easy. Hit 13.1 right about 3-hour mark. With a probable slower second half, I figure 6:15 to 6:20 finish. Well, on our long training runs we had a planned break about halfway, 9-10 miles, for water/ electrolyte refill, bathroom, Clif Bar. Generally, 5-minute or so break and get moving again.

on track for a St. Jude half PR. I was feeling good, trying to stay in the moment, enjoy the experience, and not overthink – just stick with what had worked in training. Then, around mile 13.5, things started to fall apart quickly. I think the combination of a few small changes ended up snowballing into a big drop in energy. I knew I needed to eat something but was nauseated at the thought of even trying to eat. My mind then started working against me with thoughts of ‘We worked so hard for this’ and ‘I’m letting Ken down’; ‘I’m going to make us miss the time cut-off’. Fortunately, Ken talked me through it, and after a long walk break when I, little by little, got a gel down, I was able to start running again for short bursts, starting with a minute and counting down each second until a walk break. The counting helped keep me going until the next walk. Eventually, it got easier and we were able to get back to a routine. It was such a relief to finally break through that wall and know that we would be able to finish.”

time at some point. Rolling into the 22-mile aid station, we knew our coach was going to be there, but it was a huge morale boost to see Eling for hugs and some quick motivation before venturing into unknown territory. We’d never been beyond 22 miles. Then it was my turn around mile 25. The ankle and hip aches were making it hurt more to stop running than to keep at it. But neither of us had a solid mile of running left. The only thing left to do was just get there. Run, walk, crawl… We were starting to feel it. We were going to make it. A random biker on Danny Thomas heading the opposite way shouted some encouraging words. Sarah said, “You know who that was?” Nope. “I think that was Joe Birch.” No way! Hey, there’s that 26-mile marker I was going to hug.

Nah, I don’t have the energy to stop moving forward then start again. There is the chute. There are the tears. Final turn. 6:38. I’ve heard talk of crossing that line. I have no words. The crowds were gone. Equipment being broken down. Ah, life at the back of the pack. Volunteers still at it. Thanks to all of you from start to finish. We stumble into AutoZone Park in search of food, not expecting to find any. The icing on the cake for the day? They still had pizza.

This article was published a year ago, but it is so well done and captures the spirit of the St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend so well that it is worth running a second time. I hope you agree. — Brent Manley, editor.

By Joel Lyons, PT, OCS Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome

The knee continues to be the most frequently troubled area for runners. Among knee injuries, patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is the most common diagnosis for runners. Just as the name implies with this problem, pain is between the kneecap and the end of the femur. Increased friction between these two bones creates wear and tear at the joint surfaces. But the big question is “Why do we get this increased friction?” The usual answer is the repetitive nature of our sport. Then why doesn’t every runner and for that matter every walker get PFPS? Let’s look into why and I’ll present some new research that can help combat this problem. I’ve written before that abnormal structural alignment is one reason people have this problem. Increased valgus at the knee causes lateral tracking of the kneecap. Valgus knees are sometimes called “knockedknees” and they present as the legs angle in at the knees where they are almost touching. When the quad is contracted and the person has this structure, the kneecap will be pulled laterally (toward the outside) and rub on a ridge on the femur. Since this is typically congenital we typically can’t do a lot to change this alignment. However, there are ranges in the severity of the valgus from person to person, so that it doesn’t have to be a deal breaker when it comes to running or not running. The person with increased valgus needs to be diligent with doing all the activities that will minimize the friction in their knees. Closely associated with this factor is increased hip

adduction. This is the alignment of the hip in which the hip is at an increased acute angle instead of being closer to straight. This brings the femur inward and again can create an angle that causes more friction at the kneecap. Now this could be congenital, but it also could be created because of flexibility issues, specifically the adductor muscles of the hips. Those are the ones that we use to pull our legs together. Therefore maintaining some flexibility in this area could help reduce the effects on the knee. The splits stretch in which you simply take your legs out laterally as far as you can is helpful. You can choose to do it dynamically if you wish by standing and swinging your leg to the outside while you are standing. Swing it back in and repeat for 30 seconds to a minute and do the other leg. Increased hip internal rotation has also been reported in patients with PFPS. This position has been described as “pigeon-toed,” (the feet are turned inward). This might occur from the knees down, but it could happen from the hips. Again, this could be a congenital anomaly cause by bone alignment, but it also may be because of muscle tightness. This motion will help stretch this muscle: Lie on your back, flex the hip and knee toward your chest, then pull your ankle across the midline of your body. The other reported observation in patients with PFPS is contralateral hip drop. In this case, the hip musculature is thought to be weak on the same side as the knee pain. Because of the weakness when the person is standing only on that side, the hip is not strong enough to maintain a level pelvis. The opposite side will lower. With this excessive drop, greater stress is caused all the way down the leg that has the weight

on it. The key to avoiding this is doing strengthening to these hip muscles. I’ve written before that a common way to do this is lying on the side opposite of the hurt knee. Perform a straight leg raise with an ankle weight on the upper leg. A recent study from the American Journal of Sports Medicine found another way to improve pain complaints in runners with PFPS. The authors found that increasing the step rate or cadence not only improved running kinematics but significantly improved pain and function in runners with PFPS. They looked at 12 runners with faulty mechanics and complaints of knee pain. They were brought in for one session of training to increase their cadence by 10%. The participants then were asked to work on this increased cadence for the following four weeks. They used a metronome application on their smart phones. How do you know if this might work for you? First, find out what your step rate is. Step rate is defined as the number of steps per minute that your feet contact the ground. You can easily estimate this by counting only the number of steps you take with one foot for 30 seconds and multiply that by 4. Example: you land with your right foot 40 times within a 30 second span. Multiply that 40 by 4 to come up with 160 steps per minute. It has been often mentioned that a good step rate is 180 or higher.

If yours is lower than that and you have PFPS it might be worth a try to change your cadence. The participants in this study averaged 165.93 steps per minute at the start of the study and were able to increase their rate to 181.04 and maintain it 3 months later. On a scale of 0 to 10 they rated their pain on average as 6.2 at the start of the study and only a 0.3 three months later. These are significant, but the sample size is really very small. More studies should be done to confirm these findings. I hope you realize by now that you don’t have to stop running if you have this type of knee pain. There are plenty of things you can do as I suggested above. It may only take one or two of these changes to reduce your pain, but what if you did all of them? You might have a good chance of running either with less pain or maybe even pain free!

Becky Runs the Road Race Series (Finally) By Becky Heineke 901-268-6818

I had never run the Road Race Series – not the series as a whole and not any of the individual races. With a handful of exceptions for injury, illness and burnout, I’ve run the St. Jude Half Marathon or Marathon every year since 2007, and while I’d been assured by many that the RRS was great training for St. Jude, I was unconvinced. Over the years, I’d firmly established my St. Jude plan: track workouts, minimal racing and long runs with Breakaway on Saturday mornings. Some years I’ve been (a lot) more dedicated than others, and some years I’ve had better race days than others, but I’ve always made it to finish line. And yet sometimes the best reason for doing something is the simple fact that you’ve never done it. So in 2019, after doing the usual thing and signing up for the St. Jude Memphis Half Marathon, I did the non-usual thing and signed up for the road race series. This is how it went … July RRS Goal: Run every race! Be a Road Warrior! First 5K (07/14/2019): Hurricane Barry was making its way into the city on the morning of this race, which I imagine made for some interesting running weather. Unfortunately, I wasn’t out there to enjoy it. I was in bed, sick. July RRS Goal: Run every race! Late-July RRS Goal: Run six races to be a series finisher. Double-up on the 5-milers. Second 5K (07/28/2019): At last I made it to the start line of my first Road Race Series race, which was surprisingly crowded and conveniently close to my house. This also happened to be the day that I saw Hamilton at the Orpheum, so when I looked back through my daily journal entry for some details to include here, what I found was primarily a recap of the play, not the race. But I did manage to squeeze in at the very bottom of the entry that my time was just over 30 minutes and “for the shape I’m in, I’ll take it.” First 5-miler (08/11/2019): Yeesh. I had such good intentions for this! But then a friend of mine unexpectedly and very last-minute decided to visit for the weekend, and while I aspire to be someone who can host a friend for a weekend and not bat an eye at

The author on the course of the second 5K in the road race series. waking up early on a Sunday morning and running 5 miles before coming back home and finishing up hosting duties, I am not that person. (In consolation to myself, I ran 5 miles on my own, later in the day.) Late-July RRS Goal: Run six races to be a series finisher. Double-up on the 5-milers. Mid-August RRS Goal: Run six races, and double up on the 10Ks. Second 5-miler (08/25/2019): This race went really well. I grew up in Bartlett, and while the course didn’t pass by any of the three houses I lived in as a child, it did go by a lot of other familiar streets and houses, which made the run an especially happy one. 28

According to my journal, this was a “great run that I enjoyed and didn’t push too hard on.” First 10K (09/08/2019): Shelby Farms is one my favorite places to run, and this race felt good from start to finish (“great weather, great race!” my journal exclaims). I ran into the editor of this very magazine at the start line, and I spontaneously told him I would write an article about running the series for the first time. (And look at that, I followed through!) The 6.2 miles flew by, but … hmmm, the second great race in a row … seldom a good sign … I enjoyed it, but I also saw the writing on the wall for what was ahead. Second 10K (09/22/2019): I’m like clockwork. After a couple of good races, I’m pretty much guaranteed a race experience like this one, which makes me question everything from my ability to run to the meaning of life. Oh, God, this was hard. I felt terrible the whole time. First 10-miler (10/06/2019): This was the race I was most wary of, both because

of its reputation for being difficult and the serious jump-up in mileage. But as is so often the case, my concern was misplaced. At the start line, standing in the middle of Shelby Forest, we were surprised by a rain shower. It rained through the entire race – a steady, cooling, and somehow cleansing rain that sounded peaceful in the trees and kept everyone around me quiet, creating the strange illusion that I was out in the woods by myself instead of running alongside several hundred others. I crossed the finish line tired, happy, and feeling stronger physically and more connected mentally to running than I have in quite some time. By far, this was my favorite race of the series. Mid-August RRS Goal: Run six races, and double up on the 10Ks. Mid-October RRS Goal: Run the rest of the races in the series, so my total will be 8 out of 10! Second 10-miler (10/20/2019): Inspired as I was by the first 10-miler, I decided to do the second one as well. A great plan …but one that ultimately didn’t happen. Having signed up for Tour d’Esprit and the Overton Park 5-Mile Classic, if I’d done the second 10-miler, I’d have run a race every weekend in October. The second 10-miler also fell on the weekend (continued on page 31)

of my dad’s birthday, so, giving in to exhaustion, I chose to visit my parents for the weekend and gave my tired legs a rest. Mid-October RRS Goal: Run the rest of the races in the series, so my total will be 8 out of 10! Early-November RRS Goal: Get through one of the two half marathons, and focus on recovering in time for St. Jude. First half marathon (11/03/2019): I knew this race – an out and back on Singleton Parkway – was notorious for being mentally difficult, but for some reason I didn’t put much thought into it being a half marathon. I spent much of the first four miles trying to warm up (it was quite chilly at the start line), the next four miles blithely watching other runners as I loped along, and then, around mile eight, it hit me that I still had five full miles to go, and that I was running a half marathon. Half marathons are long, and I felt that in every inch of those last five miles. To keep myself occupied, I tried to guess my pace and decided, based on nothing other than how I felt, that I was probably going to run a 2:26. I crossed the finish line in 2:26:40, and I think I was almost more satisfied for having pegged my time than I was that I finished the race. Second half marathon (11/17/2019): This fell on the weekend of my college reunion. Once I realized that, I was especially grateful that I’d chosen to run the first half marathon and not the second one. My foreign running adventures By Paul Rubin started at 8K, increasing weekly in the weeks leading up the big 20K Race in May. It was exhilarating to run through the forest. Everyone brought a dish and a bottle of wine. After our run, we would picnic in the park (weather permitting) or go to someone’s home. The food was ample and sumptuous – cheeses, breads, quiches, desserts and many bottles of wine were consumed. This type of training regimen was new to me. I’m not sure I lost any weight at the end of the day. I relocated to Singapore on a project while I was training for the Big Sur Marathon. The weather was like Memphis summer – hot and humid. I participated in several local races including a half marathon. I was shocked that the police would stop the runners to avoid impeding traffic. I joined the Hash Harriers group and had some “fun” times trying to keep up with the group through the streets and alleys of Singapore. We went to Indonesia for a hash weekend. Getting lost was not an option. I had one project in Costa Rica and recall heading out from the hotel for a Sunday-morning run. I tried to remember which streets I turned left and then right. I got turned around with no idea how to get back to my hotel. This was back before phones with GPS functionality. The few locals I encountered did not speak English. Running out of water and energy, I somehow was able to get pointed in the right direction and made it “home.”

Some folks who go on vacation put aside their physical fitness efforts. Others, like myself, consider them critical to maintaining a balance in life, getting acclimated to new time zones or mitigating any guilt on feasting abroad. I always take my running shoes with me when I travel. Running in new places can be fun, challenging and scary at times. Recently my wife and I took a river cruise in France. At our first port, Le Pecq, I headed out along the Seine, following a bike path. I observed many dog walkers, boats in the river, cyclists (none with a helmet) and a few joggers. Hearing the sounds of children, I realized I was passing a school. Every step brought me to a new place. Eventually, I turned around and headed back to the boat to refuel. I thought of my many (mis) adventures in other lands and decided to write this article. I remember my first romantic weekend decades ago in Paris when I ran along the Seine, jogging past the Eiffel Tower. What a way to sightsee! Years ago, I transferred to Brussels for work. Via an uncle of a Memphis friend, I joined a Sunday morning running group of 10-12 guys (40-50 years old) who had been meeting MRTC is proud to be a member for years in a of the large forest. During a tour of Scandinavia, I happened upon a midnight race in Stockholm. What a hoot – departing 2020 Roadrunner deadlines at 12 a.m. with hundreds of other racers, it was (subject to change) challenging at times as the lighting wasn’t great on several streets. Auto Home Life Business Motorcycle Other fond memories included running along a country road in an English village followed by a weekend run in London’s Hyde Park. Quite a contrast. I had the opportunity to attend the Paralympics and see some fascinating athletes. Once upon a time on a vacation in Bangkok, Thailand, I realized that it wasn’t safe to jog from the hotel. Happy Reading with Happy Skywalker RRCA Running Coach

Endure: Mind, Body, and the Curiously

“turns out that, whether it’s heat or cold, hunger or thirst, or muscles screaming with the supposed poison of “lactic acid,” what matters in many cases is how the brain interprets these distress signals.” But can you believe this claim? Luckily, all the science is laid out in this enjoyable read and you can decide for yourself. You will love this book if: you find experiments in science labs fascinating, want to understand why the human body quits when it does or are enthralled by stories of remarkable feats of endurance. You won’t love this book if: you don’t care how or why the human body works, or if you’re searching for specific training advice.

Elastic Limits of Human Performance By Alex Hutchinson

Reviewed by Happy Skywalker “A runner is a miser, spending the pennies of his energy with great stinginess, constantly wanting to know how much he has spent and how much longer he will be expected to pay. He wants to be broke at precisely the moment he no longer needs his coin.” — Alex Hutchinson, Endure: Mind, Body, and the Curiously Elastic Limits of Human Performance

About the Book

About the Author

In this book readers explore the physical limits that stop athletes: pain, muscular endurance, need of oxygen, heat, thirst and lack of fuel. We look at how each might be a barrier to endurance – or might not. With a critical eye on laboratory science and the support of true stories, the author finds (spoiler alert)

Alex Hutchinson has the perfect credentials to explore this topic as a former Olympian runner, long time writer, and a Cambridge-trained physicist. His experience is in running, writing, and deciphering the meaning behind scientific findings. You may have read his work in Runner’s World, the New Yorker, or The New York Times. If you like his style, you can also check out his ongoing series “Sweat Science” on Outside Online. Available in paperback, audiobook (with notoriously bad narration), and ebook formats.

MRTC bad-weather policy

MRTC contracts to provide finish-line services at local races. When there is inclement weather, the race director has the option to postpone or cancel the race and is responsible for notifying the MRTC and participants. In the event of a cancellation, rescheduling is unlikely because of the number of races already on the MRTC calendar. For MRTC races (the Road Race Series, the Winter Cross Country Race Series and the Hill & Dale 8-miler), the policy is that the race will go on, rain or shine. The start of a race may be delayed to let bad weather pass, but scheduled races will be run. 38
