3. Limit screen time. Too much time watching television or playing video/computer games can lead to excessive snacking and a sedentary lifestyle. 4. Make it fun. Let your children discover which specific healthy activities they truly enjoy. If they don’t like it, they won’t stick with it. 5. Focus on the positives. Celebrate your children’s successes and help them develop a healthy self-image. Low self-esteem can lead to poor eating, exercise and lifestyle habits. 6. Set goals and limits. If goals are excessively restrictive or vague, children are less likely to rise to the challenge. Establish clear nutrition and exercise goals (dessert two times a week; a half-hour walk five times a week, etc.). 7. Reward wisely. Rather than rewarding children with desserts or sugary snacks, find healthy ways to show a job well done. 8. Turn them into chefs. Get your children involved in planning and preparing meals; then sit down at the dinner table together and enjoy the healthy meal you’ve created together. 9. Knowledge is power. Teach children the value of reading food labels and being aware of the healthy (and not so healthy) ingredients in the foods they eat. 10. Don’t pass the buck. You’re the parent – that means it’s up to you to teach your children about good health. School and health care providers can only do so much.

Healthy Walking Habits Only 32% of Americans get the necessary amount of physical activity recommended by the U.S. Surgeon General’s office. Sadly, the lack of regular exercise results in heart disease and obesity. The recommendation is to exercise 30 minutes per day, at least 3 times per week. This is easily achieved when one considers that walking is something most all of us do every day and can be part of an increased physical activity plan. By current standards, one in every three Americans is considered obese and more than 18 million Americans have diabetes. Diabetes continues to grow at an epidemic rate, with 1.3 million people diagnosed each year, and another 41 million Americans are at risk of developing diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. Exercise is the best weapon to fight both of these risk factors that lead to America’s number one killer, heart disease.

Swim Lessons Helpful Hints Before Registration
• Please register for the level suggested by instructor, or if level is not known please bring your child to a free evaluation day. For more information, call the Aquatic Program Coordinator at 259-4185. • If your child has taken lessons during the summer session there will be a pass/fail indicator in the computer system. This will help guide you to register for the appropriate level. • Keep in mind that every child learns and advances at their own pace. Try not to compare your child to other members of the class; they will progress as they are ready. • Classes that have not met minimum enrollment will be cancelled the Friday before they are scheduled to start. • The Class Cancellation policy is listed in the back of the brochure. • If a class is full, please sign up for the waiting list. The Aquatic Program Coordinator will contact you if openings become available. • Please read the class descriptions carefully. If a child is signed up for the incorrect class level, there is no guarantee that the child will be transferred to the correct class level once class begins. Children will only be transferred to the correct class level if there is space available in the class. If there is not space in the correct class level, a credit will be issued to a household, but no refund will be issued. • It is recommended that if your child has taken a session off that they repeat the most recent class they have passed or be evaluated on a free evaluation day.

Parent and Child Aquatics Level A (ages
6 mo - 3 yrs) Are you wondering when should you start your child in swim lessons? It is never too early to introduce your child to the water. Parent and Child Aquatics Level A is an introduction to the water for young children and a water safety course for parents. Parents must be in the water with the child as it helps to develop swimming readiness by teaching children how to have fun in the water. The goals of Level A are to provide experiences and activities for parents and children to learn how to enter and exit the water in a safe manner, feel comfortable in the water, submerge, explore buoyancy in a front and back position, change body position in the water, and learn about choosing and using life jackets. Non-toilet trained children must wear a swim diaper. Class size is limited to a max. 15 children. JCWCC
