What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? Many large companies such as Bauer Media, IPC, Dennis and Future all publish magazines in order to create revenue for their companies, such things like advertising costs and magazine fee’s create profits in order to make and print these magazines. Bauer is a worldwide media empire offering over 300 magazines in 15 countries, as well as online, TV and radio stations. Bauer are the world’s largest Media company and are widely known and recognized across the globe. I feel as Bauer are constantly changing alongside the zeitgeist, with my modern and professional themed magazine, my institution should be Bauer media. One big advantage with being published by such a big company like Bauer is you’re almost guaranteed the satisfactory amount of advertising and work in order to try and make the magazine survive its first 4 years. Coincidentally as Bauer media are using the zeitgeist in order to advance technologically, there are high chances of the magazine being digitalized and published online and through 3rd party forms such as phones, iPad’s etc. In doing this the magazine has broadened its roots in order to create profit from, as the online version will create revenue through subscriptions, page hits and advertisements, the printed version will still make revenue through advertising space and magazine costs. This allows the company to create twice the amount of profit from what they would keep at one platform. Here are the advertising rates from ‘Inside’ magazine publishers:

As you can see if all the advertising space were to be filled the company can make a substantial amount of revenue before the magazines are even printed. A disadvantage of working with such a large company is the pressure you are put under in order to meet deadlines and ensure your magazine is consistently reproducing and always to that of a high standard. There are very strict deadlines in order to ensure that the magazine is printed and distributed at the right time. In this light some companies and magazines are self-published and managed such as Clash magazine. In doing this the work is lenient and can be of simple production. This means that you can work around problems easily and beneficially. Another thing is a large company may be making a lot more revenue of other magazines than yours, in which so they may merge magazine companies or disconnect them. This would cause a lot of jobs lost and a magazine than cannot sustain itself via selfpublishing. Here is a picture of the self-published ‘Clash’ magazine. As you can see from the contents of artists they’re working with alongside the great presentation, the company is working to a great standard without a large media company representing them. This is arguable as to why there is the need for such companies as IPC and Bauer.
