Lüttville - the artistic kids’ summer camp 2014 The Lüttville summer camp celebrated its seventh birthday from the 21st to the 26th of July 2014 under the theme “gangs and complicity”. Roughly 150 children from the river islet of Wilhelmsburg and other districts engaged in 13 different creative workshops on the premises of the international MS DOCKVILLE Festival in Wilhelmsburg, Hamburg over the course of a six-day period. Every day from 1pm to 6pm, the children - aged five to 14 years - dealt with their own art and, under professional guidance, learned and produced a lot: for example, how does one build a tepee? What kind of gang rituals exist? How does music get into radios and how do you write a presentation? How many different forms of photography are there? How can one develop a music track on a computer? At the beginning of every Lüttville day, all participants met under the large communal sail and presented what they had experienced to date before heading back into their respective workshops. Before venturing back home in the evening, the children convened one more time for a teambuilding game. Once again this year the Lüttville week culminated in its closing event which brought together parents, relatives and the children’s friends. In front of approximately 450 people, the children presented their results from the Lüttville week: The performance projects such as the circus workshop, the capoeira group, the gang theatre as well as the dance and rap groups captured the stage and demonstrated their skills in front of the admiring audience. Walks around the extensive grounds invited the visitors to discover numerous end products of the workshop week: a tree hole, a clay oven, a labyrinth made up out of euro pallets, wall paintings and short films in a darkened container!
This year, the parents were involved in the closing event on a culinary level: roughly 50 delicious contributions were made by them to the international buffet. The Lüttville summer traditionally concludes with a performance during the famous MS DOCKVILLE Festival. The traditional performance of the New Style group to a song of a band on the main festival stage – this year it was the band OK KID – was acclaimed by the audience even in spite of the light rain. The self-written song by the Bad Beat Boys, which was performed on one of the smaller stages in front of around two hundred enthusiastic visitors on Sunday afternoon during the festival, definitely turned several festival goers into true fans. Children’s care at the Lüttville 2014 A lot of helping hands are necessary in order to take good care of the children during the Lüttville. The executive team consisted of four primarily responsible freelancers, 23 workshop instructors at 13 workshops and 34 supervisors and helpers. The workshop instructors are all trained pedagogues with multiple years of professional experience. Our supervisors and assistants are usually students or graduates of pedagogy studies. In order to respond to interpersonal issues or individual concerns of the children in the best and most adequate manner, we introduced something new in this year’s Lüttville: the ‘Safe Space’. This was an additional retreat where the children were constantly supervised by two teachers. They were in constant contact with the workshop instructors and the children, and could take care of little aches and pains and occurring conflicts without the other supervisors having to interrupt their work. Additionally, this workshop offered children’s yoga as a form of relaxation for the children. The Safe Space was very well received by the children, so it will be a permanent part of the programme in the forthcoming years. For the second time, a kitchen team consisting of seven volunteers was installed in order to supply all children and caretakers with a full-fledged vegetarian lunch. Moreover, vegetables, fruit and water were always available. Target group reached Roughly 150 children aged between five and 14 years (on average 7.5 years) were permanently present at Lüttville. 18 children came from Billstedt, 25 children from Harburg residential accommodations and the remaining 87 children came exclusively from districts of the river islet (Veddel, Wilhelmsburg, Kirchdorf). Achievements The promotion and support of children’s social, cognitive and motor skills was the goal which we achieved through a variety of creative workshops: KLANGSTROLCHE (5-6 year-olds) This workshop was all about colour gangs. Gang rituals were analysed and accomodations such as a tepee were built. CIRCUS WORKSHOP (6-10 year-olds) ‘Circus TriBühne e.V.’ focused on the training of the children’s motor abilities. The acrobatic exercises also helped the children to trust each other and look after one another. Proof of the exercises was given during the closing event where the human pyramid
stood rock-steady. PHOTO EXERIMENTS (6-10 year-olds) In cooperation with the ‘Haus der Jugend Kirchdorf’ the participants learned how to manufacture chemical frames, photograms or even their own camera obscura. Pictures on photo paper were developed which were also exhibited at the MS ARTVILLE and MS DOCKVILLE. BUILDING WORKSHOP (6-10 year-olds) The ‘Bauspielplatz Galgenbrack e.V.’ created a walk-in labyrinth made up out of palettes with the children, which was also presented as an additional work of art during the MS ARTVILLE. PAINTING WORKSHOP (5-10 year-olds) By painting diverse scenes, instructors playfully taught the children colour theory and imagery partition. The children also learned how a full-fledged piece of art is put together, by working together on an oversized canvas. CAPOEIRA (6-10 year-olds) The Brazilian dance and martial arts was taught with all its rhythmic and acrobatic elements and presented in the form of a joint performance, which the children developed themselves in front of parents and friends during the closing event. SPIELZEUGBANDEN UND KOMPLIZEN (SPIELMOBIL FALKENFLITZER) (5-10 year-olds) There was a lot on offer at the Falkenflitzer: making sculptures out of plaster or figures out of foam material, sculptures out of aerated concrete and clay sculptures. CAVE AND TREE HOUSE CONSTRUCTION (6-12 year-olds) First of all a suitable place for the gang tree house was explored. During the construction phase the cave team strengthened itself with pizza from a self-made clay oven and lemonade from picked blackberries. LÜTTVILLE RADIO (8-13 year-olds) Five children expanded their journalistic skills with the creation of a radio contribution. They learned to develop ideas and implement them in order to achieve a common end product. Thus, many interviews were conducted and set lists created resulting in a one-hour live broadcast via Tide. On this occasion, the children could interact with the radio professionals. SHORT FILM ACADEMY (10-14 year-olds) Making an action short film amidst the Lüttville setting, the children learned how to use a camera, how to cut and produce a film. Some of the children were also able to put their acting abilities to the test. NEW STYLE (dance) (10-14 year-olds) Tobias Galke’s choreography required a lot of physical and rhythmical feeling. He also taught the children the basics of hip-hop dance, which the 20 participants needed for their on-stage performance with the headliner OK KID in front of a large audience. GANG THEATRE (11-14 year-olds) Diverse drama exercises made the children deal with their own identity. They subsequently dealt with this experience in their self-written play. RAP WORKSHOP (8-13 year-olds) The children learned the basics of digital music production and created a beat, which they then rapped their own texts to and beat boxing parts on. They quickly came up with a suitable name: the Bad Beat Boys performed their grand results both at the closing event and at the MS DOCKVILLE Festival. A strong network Thanks to the large network of partnering institutions Lüttville 2014 was successfully implemented: Spielmobil Falkenflitzer e.V. (Wilhelmsburg), Bauspielplatz am Galgenbrack e.V.
