MS Dockville 2014 Music: 130 bands and DJs of which 52 were international acts, plus smaller spontaneous performances; Art: 18 artists and art collectives from seven different countries; Poetry slam: nine German-speaking poetry slammers presented by Kampf der Künste e.V.; Free trade area: 28 DIY stands; Visitors: Approximately 5,000 visitors from all over Germany and neighbouring countries, notably the UK, Scandinavia and the Benelux countries. Once again an eventful summer full of highlights, performances, musical gems and artistic treats came to an end culminating in the MS DOCKVILLE as per the previous eight years. The impressive and unique premises were shaped and influenced anew this year by all the events taking place in the run-up to the festival: whether in the framework of the Daughterville, during the children‘s summer camp Lüttville, the SCIENCEVILLE, the SPEKTRUM or throughout the MS ARTVILLE. Participants and visitors equally gave the colourful hustle and bustle a very personal touch. In addition to the in recent years lovingly designed stages and performance venues that combine the cultural diversity and the artistic craftwork of the festival, the second main stage (‘Vorschot’) was moved closer to the water in order for visitors to be able to enjoy the picturesque harbour scenery in its full glory. Exactly this successful recipe of old and new reflects the distinctive character of the festival. At the MS DOCKVILLE you definitely come across established artists in the music scene, but we continue to focus on young, unconventional and unknown musicians. During the festival these then have the opportunity to increase their visibility and to set new impulses with their musical creations. Thus the festival becomes a stepping-stone and playing field to spark incentives using unusual musical paths. This year, well-known names such as Die Antwoord (ZA), Jake bugg (UK), Birdy (UK) and Alle Farben (D) amazed the audience; but also old friends, for example, MØ (DK) or Milky Chance (D), shone next to unknown celebrated newcomers such as Kaytranada (CAN), Coely (BE) or Jungle (UK). The growing popularity of the MS DOCKVILLE, however, also poses some challenges; for example, the increasing demand for camping facilities this year but we were able to resolve the issue by providing an additional campsite ‘BACKBORD’. Another innovation this year was the first official MS DOCKVILLE app. In addition to the ever-popular programme booklet the app was used as a virtual and interactive navigation chart to steer through the festival waters. Another specific feature of the MS DOCKVILLE is the constant linking and integration between music and art. The works of art of the MS ARTVILLE, which took place for the first time this year, not only had a great impact on the setting of the MS DOCKVILLE by their use and perpetual presence but also there were guided art tours with our communicators, who managed to surprise the visitors with installations and projects intertwined with nature even in the most remote corners. Performances of the artistic collective Wölfe & Kabel, artistic research on the behaviour of the festival visitors, the daily changing “Gallery of the day” by the Krautzungen and much more were all part of the integration. This unusual concentration of different aspects and sub-projects was once more underlined by the various dinghy-projects belonging to the festival. Be it the traditionally held poetry slam, in association with the Kampf der Künste, the interview stage as an opportunity to get a lot closer to favourite bands, or the MS DOCKVILLE Thursday which took place for the first time this year to get all early campers in the mood for the weekend. The programme was rounded off by the integration of non-profit organisations to create
awareness for non-profit and charitable agendas, including the free trade area with 28 DIY stands and handmade products far from commercial mass consumption. Even the journey on a historic barge, which shuttled between the festival and the main pier in Hamburg’s town centre, became an exceptional experience. In its eighth year, the MS DOCKVILLE continues to stand out through its cultural diversity and has made a name for itself in Europe by continuously evolving. The speciality is the composition of the festival as a result of its many sub-projects: The MS DOCKVILLE can be recognised as the final presentation of everything: the grand finale. All formats intertwine and enrich each other. This potential of the growing international festival is used not only on a musical level, but also to enhance cultural and social advancement as well as extracurricular education. Sustainable MS DOCKVILLE We don’t see ourselves only as an idea generator and pulse generator in the pop and socio-cultural field, but also in the field of sustainability which, from our point of view, is distributed on three levels. At issue here is the ecological, social and cultural dimension. As a festival we bear a great responsibility for, try to raise awareness of and also remove the impact of our carbon footprint through various measures. Having its roots in the district of Wilhelmsburg continues to play an important role for the MS DOCKVILLE. We are very keen to increase the awareness of Wilhelmsburg and are well aware that it is a sensitive balancing act. A lot has been imposed on its residents in the past. In our role as organisers we try to act responsibly and always look for new ways to engage with the district in our work. We work with local providers or street art artists from Wilhelmsburg and also try to use local service providers during the festival production. Due to the growing national and international popularity of the festival, more and more visitors make the leap across the River Elbe, and so we also help contribute to an increase in the attractiveness of Wilhelmsburg.
ECOLOGICAL Dimension
Mobility The ‘Bicycle Wardrobe’ guarded 1,000 bicycles around the clock. 3,500 bike parking racks; Bike rentals (in cooperation with Fahrradverleih in Wilhelmsburg): up to 60 bicycles and bike trailers were rented; 14.950 shuttle tickets were sold. Food service / catering 40% of the food stalls offered organic food; 25% of the food stalls sold vegetarian or vegan products and 65% of the food stalls were regionally sourced. Electricity 85 % of electricity consumed this year was sourced from fixed current. Waste reduction/prevention 10 % more overall reduction compared to the previous year; 100 % of tableware made from PLA; waste separation was used in selected parts of the festival, such as backstage and at the food stalls. Decomposable toilets These were situated on the campsites and established in
cooperation with Pootopia. The idea was well received and the use of a flat rate was very popular. SOCIAL DIMENSION
Lüttville 150 children; 140 of which were permanently present; 130 of which were from districts south of the River Elbe; Age range from 5 to 14 years (on average 7.5 years old). 13 creative workshops in cooperation with nine partners: Spielzeugbanden und Komplizen, Klangstrolche, Lüttville radio, circus workshop, photographic experiments, building workshop, painting workshop, Capoeira, cave and tree house construction, short film academy, new style, gang theatre, rap. Budget: approx. EUR 50.000 (~ EUR 334 funding per child). CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS
Pro Familia A counselling centre distributed 3,000 condoms, approximately
400 tampons, tissues and lollies and installed 200 urinals, although the demand was even greater. In addition ProFamilia played sex roulette with the visitors. Viva con Agua There was an information booth about the organisation and donations were collected via returnable cups. Artists were also acquired as project partners. Result: 1,439 cups collected: EUR 1,743 worth of donations through collecting donated returnable cups and through additional actions such as the sale of hand designed postcards and the posting of these and the sale of earrings made out of used VcA bottle caps. The donations will be channelled to water projects in the city Moroto in Uganda. For the first time Viva con Agua presented a permanent art exhibition – “Shero” – designed and implemented by students of the HCU. It was in the form of plastic water carriers to promote justice for the human right to have access to clean water.
Reduced admission fee for local residents People from Wilhelmsburg and Veddel were invited to make use of a reduced price for the entrance ticket to the festival. 1,500 residents benefitted from this offer. CULTURAL DIMENSION
Fine and performance arts 18 artists and art collectives from Germany, Chile, Brazil and Argentina, 3 of which were performances and 15 of which were installations. Art conveyance / qualitative feedback 16 communicators, more than 200 guided walks - many of which were in English; the communicators came into contact with roughly every third visitor. Bands & DJs at the festival 130 bands & DJs: 78 were from Germany and 52 were from abroad. Poetry Slam 9 German-speaking poetry slammers.
“The boundaries between man and masses can occasionally blur beyond recognition at a festival and leave the individual confused, enchanted and changed. When 25000 fans of pop and art come together for three days as in the eighth edition of Dockville in Wilhelmsburg, everyone becomes performer and audience at the same time. The ego can be felt and shaken. And in the best case, it creates something bigger. A magical moment. Or two, three, many.”
“There is no other festival where the mood is so relaxed and cheerful, the atmosphere so creative.”
HAMBURGER ABENDBLATT
DIE WELT
HAMBURGER MORGENPOST “The Dockville has long become a place of longing for many. A temporary utopia.” “The festival doesn’t only change its visitors every year but also itself.”
