MS DOCKVILLE’s little daughter successfully premiered on June 8th, 2013. With approx. 1,000 visitors of 14 to 22 years of age, more than twelve bands and DJs as well as Lautsprecher’s U20 poetry slam sweetened the already perfectly summery tempered holiday kick-off for many Hamburg school kids. Daughterville is a festival by the youth for the youth. Well over 30 participants of the course program lasting several months independently launched this Festival newcomer. Under the tutelage of professionals, the areas of booking, PR, and production were mastered, thereby gradually assembling one independent festival. Acts such as the rising Chimparator hero WEEKEND or the Hamburg newcomers Schmidts Kater, Lùisa, Pool, and We Are Alaska made for a musical lineup spanning from hip-hop and indie to pop and folk. The U20 poetry slam by Hamburg-based Lautsprecher complemented the lineup by adding a pinch of the up-and-coming domestic poetry scene.

Cultural awareness and prevocational initiative Daughterville is not only a festival; it is equally an education scheme for adolescents aged between 14 and 18. More than 30 young participants from Wilhelmsburg and other Hamburg districts convened regularly for various workshops at the Bßrgerhaus Wilhelmsburg to co-create the festival. A preliminary workshop phase provided practice-oriented insights to pop culture and festival organization issues. The participants jointly elaborated on various questions: what musical genres are there? How can I get myself informed about new musical trends? What sort of festivals are there and how do they differ? What are festivals’ unique selling propositions? Conversations on musical habits, personal taste, and individual preferences fostered the exchange between youngsters and contributed to some of them getting new impressions. The next phase saw the functional areas of festival organization be conveyed by the people in charge of the MS DOCKVILLE Festival. Ranging from booking and PR to administration, finance, and production – the youngsters got to know each and every single one of them separately. Having gotten in touch with the theoretical constructs, the adolescents kicked off the active part. They jointly issued a desired lineup, contacted bands, negotiated, booked, informed the press, and ordered technical equipment. Smart, target group-oriented marketing led to the desired advance sales, a well-staffed festival terrain, and a perfectly successful premiere altogether. At the end of the festival, the youngsters did not only perform on-stage with WEEKEND but were able to look back proudly on a well-made event. What is more, every single one of them acquired an important addition to their job-relevant skill set and got an insight of what it is like work as a concert and festival promoter.
