MS DOCKVILLE FESTIVAL Musik: 130 bands & DJs, 49 of which were international acts; Art: 15 artists and artistic collectives from 11 different countries; Poetry slam: 12 German-speaking poetry slammers presented by Kampf der Künste e.V.; Free trade area: 33 DIY stands; Visitors: Around about 25,000 visitors from all over Germany and neighboring countries The dazzling MS DOCKVILLE Summer 2013 has passed. Once again, the three-day MS DOCKVILLE Festival constituted its impressive ending. All elements of the MS DOCKVILLE Summer convened in this event and were further supplemented by the performances of 130 bands and DJs as well as twelve poetry slammers. Current pop and sociocultural trends thus found a platform for presentation. The performance venues and stages, that had been constructed by hand in the weeks prior to the Festival, such as the wooden “Butterland”, the container installation “Nest” or the newly erected “Klüse” featuring a view on the River Elbe again officiated as MS DOCKVILLE trademarks. In the framework of the Daughterville Festival, of Lüttville, the Art Camp and SPEKTRUM, these performance spaces were already erected and used prior to the actual Festival. A concentration of cultural diversity and artisanal craftwork unmatched to date has developed into a fixed constant and flagship quality of the MS DOCKVILLE. The stage ensemble was complemented by the panoramic “Klüse” this year. It offered DJs, small bands, and especially the audience a beautiful view at wee hours: the sunrise over the River Elbe. The diversity of the lineup and the compilation of established and fresh, new bands time and again dominated the acoustic appearance of the Festival. Be it renowned bands such as Foals, Woodkid, Mac Miller, and Crystal Fighters or young and largely celebrated acts such as Haim, Milky Chance, Mø, Xul Zolar, and Oddisee – each and every single band contributed to a successful festival in their own right. A top-class nightly program ensured excessive dance sessions on numerous stages this time around again: Wankelmut (John Talabot), Slow Magic, and RSS Disco (Cosmic DJ) are just a few of the live acts which helped turn the MS DOCKVILLE nights into days and transferred the club to an outdoor arena. The Art Camp, which had taken place several weeks prior to the Festival, did not only leave visual traces on the Festival context: The project “Sprawling Spots” (ger. “Wucherpunkte”) by Frl. Wunder AG led the Festival visitors to Wilhelmburg’s secluded weedy off-spots by bike. These places, however, were worth discovering new perspectives and joint actions in. The Hamburg-based artistic collective Krautzungen also won over the audience once again. Their “Gallery of the Day” (ger. “Galerie des Tages”) saw new weed-inspired exhibits be added every day, ranging from Dadaistic poetry and stinging nettles to turbo techno. The guided walking tours were the way to go for those who did not want to miss out on any of the artworks, even those hidden in overgrown corners. The communicators unconventionally led the visitors across the Festival grounds to installations and interventions, all the while fostering the exchange between walkers and artists. By tradition, the poetry slam was again part of the MS DOCKVILLE Festival. Twelve slammers from Germany competed against each other in Saturday’s and Sunday’s poetry slams. Patrick Salmen, who sent the audience at the well-frequented venue into raptures, came out as winner this year. In addition to on-stage performances, fine and performative arts as well as the poetry slam, various other dinghy-like projects were on board, too: the free trade area harbored 33 small do-it-yourself stands sel-

ling knickknacks to sticklers for detail, far from any commercial mass-consumerism orientation. The MS DOCKVILLE cash office, which connected the gangway to the Festival terrain, perfectly complemented the Festival. Having charitable organizations such as Viva von Agua, One or Laut gegen Nazis present raised awareness for the support of non-profit and caritative agendas while allowing for the collection of donations. The Festival continues to be unique in its orientation. Since its inception, it has been a real concern for MS DOCKVILLE to integrate art into a music festival. This idea has spread to other festival formats but the MS DOCKVILLE concept in all its sustainably intermeshed beauty remains a novelty and continues to be one-of-a-kind among the host of festivals out there. The MS DOCKVILLE Festival, to us, is and will be an idea generator, impulse catalyst, and presentation platform for numerous novel projects in the pop and socio-cultural arena. Sustainable MS DOCKVILLE We assume full responsibility for our actions as cultural and social agents, particularly with regard to the greater Hamburg area and especially the district of Wilhelmsburg. We perceive sustainability to be rooted in three spheres: the social, the ecological, and the cultural one. A festival inevitably leaves behind negative ecological traces. It has to be our pronounced objective to keep this to a minimum and to raise the visitors’ awareness for the said issue. A festival of such dimensions has remarkable potential as a platform for social and ecological agendas and to push creative and social processes forward. We intend to do so in the framework of our various cooperation projects, such as our charitable kids’ recreational summer time Lüttville, which is part of the Festival, or our Daughterville Festival, which is organized by young Wilhelmsburg residents.
