Richard G. Drew By Kaleb
Have you ever invented something that changed the lives of everyone, but isn’t very famous? Richard G. Drew was born in Joplin, Missouri, June 22 1899, and Died December 14 1980. Richard went to Minnesota State University for his college education and he has no trace of other education. Things happening in the world at the time of 1923, these events were happening: British, American and French warships were battling for the control of the Yangtse River because of World War 1 in 1914 – 1916. A new emperor of Japan is crowned then in World War 2 he chose to attack the U.S. because he needed more resources and his country was falling. Some interesting facts about Richard Drew were: While delivering trial batches to the local auto body shop for testing, he noticed painters having difficulty masking car parts because the paint often peeled off when the tape was removed. Drew devised a tape of cabinetmaker’s glue and treated crepe paper. Automakers found the tape ideal for masking off areas during auto body painting and immediately began to place orders. When he was a kid he thought of something that can stick two things together then in 1923 he made it reality. Richard G. Drew only worked at 3M labs for 2 years and he already invented something. The invention worked by cutting, or tearing a small or large portion of the tape out and getting two things and put the two things side by side and then you put the portion of tape in the middle, top, or bottom. The invention of scotch masking tape benefitted people by letting people put two things together for drawings or other things like for work it was useful for your work. When you need something where you have to stick two things together for a project, thank Richard Drew for that.
