HOTTEST Tips on Unlocking the Guitar So you're interested in playing guitar but are just not sure where to start, or maybe you are an established player looking for some helpful tips and tricks to guide you on your way and excel your playing skills. Either way I feel that these tips will help you better your abilities as a guitarist. Established or just beginning, these tips CAN and WILL help you to unlock the guitar and better your playing. 1) Play! This one may seem ridiculously obvious to everyone, but the more you play, the better you will become. Playing IS Practise and Practise makes Perfect. Spend as much time as possible playing your instrument, every spare moment you get. You'd be surprised how much progress you make from simply just playing your guitar for a couple of hours each day. 2) Learn to Read Tablature, fluently. Tablature is a form of musical notation indicating instrument fingering rather than musical pitches. Notation is considerably harder to learn and read compared to tablature and this can hinder your progress in itself. Tabs are very easy to learn and read and once you are fluent, open up a massive collection of most songs readily available online or in Music Books. Tablature also gives you the ability to 'notate' your original works in a short period of time. 3) Learn your Chords. Chords are the basis and grounding of every guitarists playing abilities. Learn the Major and Minor chords in multiple positions on the fret board as well as their more common intervals e.g. seventh, ninth, diminished, augmented, dominant, suspended etc. Without chord knowledge a player's ability will be limited and crippled. 4) Know your Instrument. Every second person I know seems to be able to play guitar these days. I guess because it's such an easy instrument and yields mediocre results with little effort, It seems appealing to most people. But these people overlook the finer details of their instrument and limit themselves without even knowing. The players that REALLY stand out are the ones that know the inner workings of their guitars. They know how the bridge in their guitar works to transmit the vibrations from the strings. They know how the truss rod gives the ability to adjust the curvature of the neck. They take the time to experience and learn the object itself. Learn your guitars intricate personality. It was once a living thing. 5) Rhythm and Groove! What are these two strange occurrences? And how do they relate to playing guitar? The best guitar passages and progressions are always the ones that incorporate some sort of rhythmic grounding that excites the listener's ears. Acoustic guitar is an especially rhythmic instrument because of its audible strumming sound and can be found sitting softly in the mix of many songs just for rhythmic backing. For advanced players that are soloing, try and incorporate some kind of rhythmic

groove now and then instead of just a nonstop stream of notes. This creates tension in the music and the listener will want to continue listening on the simple fact that subconsciously they are waiting for a resolution and ease from the tension. Feel the music and push past the awkward boundary of experimentation. Create your music with the purpose of getting your listeners head nodding. Remember music is not just the notes being played, it's also the pauses in between. I hope that you will take something from these tips and apply it to your playing. Music is a bearer of emotional communications, and to be able to convey your music to your audience with 100% clarity you must fine tune your abilities. Be Confident and Play with Passion.
