Tips For Reading Guitar Music Notes When learning to play any instrument, you will need to know the basics of music theory such as definitions of the words pitch, value, rhythm and tone. In addition, you will need to know what a staff is and where notes fall on this staff. This learning is essential before trying to read sheet music. Why You Need Basic Instruction If you do not have the basics down, you will have a tough time playing any musical instruments. Once you have mastered this lesson, then you can move on to playing a guitar. Here are a few tips to help with the process. Get to Know the "Feel" of Your Guitar Become familiar with your guitar before you try to read guitar music notes. Play around with your instrument to see what it is capable of. Don't just jump in and try to play a song as that will frustrate you. Learn the Fingerboard Knowing where each note and chord is on the fret will make life much simpler when you do begin to read music notation. Trying to learn both at the same time tends to lead to frustration which impedes learning. Once you have become comfortable with your guitar, then it is time to learn what the numbers, dots and markings on sheet music mean. Do Not Start with Mozart! Start with a song that you are familiar with. This allows you to identify where you are having problems. It is a slow process at first when you are trying to read musical notation, especially if you are familiar with guitar tabs. Take your time here as it will get easier as time goes by. Keep in mind that your main concern is the dots and where they fall on the music staff. Focus on those and, when you have them mastered, move on to adding the small dots and white notes. If You are Learning the Six String Guitar... Memorizing the six strings of the instrument is essential when learning to read guitar music notes. If you know the names of the six strings this will allow you to figure out every note on the fret. Remember, the line at the bottom of the staff represents the lowest string on the guitar. Playing Chords When notes are stacked on top of each other, this is a chord and all notes will need to be played simultaneously. Practice and discipline are necessary to learning guitar music notes. It is always more difficult to unlearn a bad habit than it is to learn one correctly at the start. Many beginners learn this the hard way. Take all the time you need to learn the basics and you will be reading guitar music notes in no time at
