ANNUAL REVIEW AND BULLETIN OF STATISTICS 2012

FOREWORD

I

am pleased to present the Annual Review and Bulletin of Statistics for the year 2012. The main objective of this bulletin has always been to detail port performance, highlight port operations and serve as a source of information to port users, institutions, government and other stakeholders. Against a backdrop of challenges posed by the global economic volatility of 2011, stability is slowly returning in the domestic market with an inflation rate declining from 19.7 per cent in November, 2011 to 3.2 per cent in December 2012. This follows coordinated monetary and fiscal policy actions taken by the Government to contain inflation and exchange rate pressures. The total throughput registered appreciable growth of 9.9 per cent, recording 21.92 million tons in 2012 from 19.95 million tons in 2011. Imports grew by 10.6 per cent, posting 18.73 million tons in 2012 from 16.9 million tons in 2011 while exports increased by 9.2 percent, recording 3.05 million tons in 2012 from 2.79 million tons in 2011. Container traffic increased by 17.2 percent, rising to 903,463 Twenty-Foot Equivalents (TEUs) in 2012 from 770,804 TEUs handled in 2011. Transit traffic realized a notable growth of 18.4 per cent, recording 6.63 million ton in 2012 from 5.60 million tons in 2011. During the year, strategic investments and progress was made towards achieving our vision, “world class seaports of choice. Milestone projects undertaken to improve efficiency and service delivery, include completion of dredging, development of berth No. 19, and the initiation of the development of the Second Container Terminal. The Authority took delivery of eight (8) new Reachstakers, to add to the current twelve (12) and increased handling capacity to twenty (20) in an effort to boost the cargo handling capacity of our terminals. This will go a long way in ensuring increased operational efficiency. In addition, 27 new state of the art terminal tractors were received to enhance productivity at the container terminal, more so at the time when the port is receiving post panamax vessels and the increasing number of containers being handled at the terminal. The completion of the dredging project in 2012 has seen the port reap its benefits which has created platform for bigger vessels to berth at the Port of Mombasa. The longest ever container and RORO vessels to dock in Mombasa port; Msc TIA and JOLLEY PERLA respectively made their calls in 2012. The Msc TIA is 261 meters long with a draft of 12.3 meters which discharged and loaded

OVERVIEW

approximately 5,000 TEUs, slightly more than three the normal load. The development of second Container Terminal is a dream-come-true. The existing container terminal which was designed to handle throughput of 250,000 TEUs per annum has since surpassed its capacity as evidenced by the fact that in 2012 a total of 903,463 TEUs were handled in the Port Mombasa. Similarly, the development of berth No. 19, will give a combined quay length of 840 meters from berth 16-19 and an additional stacking capacity of 200,000 TEUs per annum. It is envisaged that the project will see the port through to the medium term. On behalf of KPA fraternity, I sincerely thank all our esteemed customers, government agencies, business partners and stakeholders for their continued support and cooperation. We wish you a fruitful and successful 2013.

Gichiri Ndua, MBS MANAGING DIRECTOR

H.E Hon. Mwai Kibaki The President of Republic of Kenya being briefed on the on-going civil works on the construction of berth no 19 by the Minister of Transport Hon Amos Kimunya accompanied by Cabinet Ministers, senior Government officials and KPA Board of Directors.

OVERVIEW

T

he Annual Review and Bulletin of Port Statistics provides crucial information on various aspects of port performance to key stakeholders. Accordingly, deliberate efforts have been made to analyse data in standard formats for easy of appreciation and reference by users. As in the past editions, the consistency of providing information to cover five years has been maintained to provide trend more clearly. The Bulletin provides comprehensive statistical information on key port performance indicators namely; ship turnaround time, berth occupancy, tonnage handled, labor productivity as well as equipment availability and utilization. In addition to port operation performance, information relating to market profile, Inland Container Depots, financial performance and marine equipment are also provided. The information contained herein enables all stakeholders to analyze resource utilization and accompanying productivities. The bulletin provides an overview of the total cargo throughput that includes imports and exports comprising containerized cargo, conventional cargo, dry bulk and liquid bulk. Container traffic (TEUs), total vessel calls and total transit are also inclusive. In the five years period, significant growth has been witnessed in all the categories of traffic. Total cargo throughput recorded an average growth rate of 7.5 per cent over the five year period, rising from 16.42 million tons in 2008 to 21.92 million tons in 2012. Container traffic registered an average growth of 10.1 per cent in the five year period, from 615,733 TEUs in 2008 to 903,463 TEU in 2012. Transit traffic posed an average growth rate of 7.9 per cent during the five year under review, from 4.87 million tons in 2008 to 6.63 million tons in 2012. Finally, I wish to take this opportunity to acknowledge with appreciation, the co-operation, contributions and team spirit by all staff that were involved in making timely publication of this edition.
