Needs
The Mix pancake mix will be distributed across the country to grocery stores. Our studio will utilize manufacturers that create sustainable mushroom packaging who will also be able to print the required imagery on the surface. This material will be shipped to a center where both the packaging and the mix will be created and combined.
Project Objective
Current State of the Market
Today the pancake mix market is dominated by a handful of trusted house names, such as Bisquick or Krusteaz. The pancake mix comes similar to a flour sack, except plastic, making it messy. The current boxes close by inserting part of the cardboard into a tab area. There is no portioned size pancake packaging on the market today.
Message
With its’ transforming packaging, the Mix pancake mix is quick and mess free, To create pancake packaging that caters to people looking for a single serve or a while also being environmentally friendly. more efficient and less messy way to make pancakes. Our transforming discs will eliminate the usage of bowls and measuring cups normally required for mixing Audience pancake mix. Ideally the buyers of the Mix pancake mix will be nationally sold to students in their later teenage years, or college students (Ages 16-22). These students fall under a Project Strategy lower economic status The product is gender neutral. The packaging will be sustainable utilizing mushroom cardboard for the outside shells, and compartmentalized— a tower of disks of portioned pancake mix. The cardboard on the inside of the servings will be water resistant using a waxy surface and the outside will lock out moisture. Each compartment will hold roughly 2/3 cup mix. The walls can be expanded upwards in order to provide room for adding water and mixing. The sides of the compartment will be marked with the height of the total volume of mix + water for perfect pancakes. There will be multiple flavors. 28 oz packaging. The packaging will have 5 discs that equal 7.5” in height, and roughly 4.5” in diameter.

Research
For my research for the Mix packaging I focused on researching the different qualities that are associated with sustainable packaging. I focused on three areas, the lotus effect, mushroom packaging, and SLIPS technology (based off of the carnivorous pitcher plant). These three areas all came into play for different aspects of the packaging. The packaging material utilized for the Mix is mushroom cardboard which is compostable, and is lined with a slippery material on the inside applying the idea of the lotus effect.

The Carnivorous Pitcher Plant
REFERENCES
The Carnivorous Pitcher Plant has a “virtually frictionless surface inside” which is its’ key ability to capturing prey. By locking in water, the plant creates a slick coating leaving no escape. Inspired by this, the Varanasi Lab of MIT produced a method for creating slippery surfaces by combining “nano/microstructured porous material with a lub ricated fluid”. The result because LiquiGlide/SLIPS technologies, a company that can create any surface to repel a variety of liquids and solids. Liquiglide is a super-hydrophobic surface emulating the carnivorous pitcher plant. The surfaces are self repairing-- after scraping the surface with a knife or blade, the material repaired almost instantaneously. Liquiglide plans on focusing their product development towards coating for food items on supermarket shelves. This new packaging will help increase energy efficiency, reduce waste, and shrink packaging.

Mushroom Packaging
REFERENCES
Fungi obtain their crisp and meaty ridges from the presence of chitin (a fiber that fungi produces through digestion) in their cell walls. Chitin, also found in the exoskeletons of insects and spiders, helps maintain structure and is crucial to keeping mushrooms crisp and fresh. Ecovative, a company exploring sustainable packaging, observes and utilizes the product of the mushroom digestive process. By utilizing mushroom mycelium to decompose agricultural byproducts such as cornstalks, Ecovative is able to create a biodegradable material that has the same durability of foam. Companies such as DELL have been utilizing this material for shipment of electronics. Mushroom packaging is created at a fraction of the price, and can be composted at home, making it a strong competitor in the packaging world.

Case Studies The Lotus Effect Plants maintain a multi-layered coating of wax on their epidermis layer which allows for water to bead up and roll off the leaves. This water repellent feature also repels bacteria and mold spores- the beaded water taking debris off the surface off the plant. The Lotus Effect has been observed and applied to many materials such as house paints, car waxes, and even fabrics. Professor Kripa Varanasi leads a lab in MIT which claims that they have created the “world’s most hydrophobic fabric, and made it even better.” In addition to observing the Lotus Effect, they looked at the ridges of 2 more of nature’s hydrophobic surfacesNasturtium Leaves and the wings of the Morpho butterfly. They found ridges on the surfaces and after applying the same idea to their fabric, they discovered a 40% increase in the rate of which water bounced off the surface of their fabric. The utilization of this technique increases the durability of surfaces; this reduces the labor costs of harvesting resources to replace used up goods and lowering the overall rate of consumption of environmentally harmful materials.

Initial Sketches
In my initial sketches I quickly sketched out images that were related to the idea of pancake mix. Originally I wanted to do a series of mixes, including pancakes, waffles, and possibly even cake mixes. These are seen in the image above and to the right; more rendered images completed in marker.

MIX MIX MIX
MIX MIX After bringing my sketches to the computer, I ended up taking a different approach with a sketch utilizing a bowl of batter in the background (seen in first image on previous page). I created imagery of cake batter and pancakes. Above is a set of logos starting with the earliest in the far left corner and the most recent in the bottom right.
14

New Sketches
In the previous logos I felt as if I was focusing too much on the idea of representing my product in an obvious way with the direct imagery of pancakes and mix. The most unsettling part of the previous set to me was the typography. I couldn't find a type face that I liked, so I decided to hand illustrate some of my ideas out. Starting in the top left I began to explore hand lettering— working with the letters on an angle and using a compass to map out the space holding it. As the images progress from top left to bottom right, I move away from a sharp serif and more towards script style lettering in combination with bold san serifs. I digitized this combination of script and san serif together, but eventually ended up utilizing all script.

THE
I traced my hand illustrations into Illustrator. Drawing from the third image with rendered marker sketches on the previous pages, I wanted to continue to incorporate the idea of the butter dotting the i, but I instead utilized a whisk head instead. I had a drop shadow in the initial outline, but later eliminated it. I experimented with different framing options and colors. The name "IN THE Mix" was changed to "the Mix"— changing from a form of catchphrase to a statement, and the association of two elements being easier to coordinate in comparison to three.

Edits
Here is my second to last iteration of the logo. The two main errors with this are the whisk being too detailed—it would get lost in the smaller 1" versions of the logo, the serif on the i, and the color was found to be unappetizing.
18
Final Main Logo
My final logo. By keeping the logo white on a single color, it is easier to change the color to accommodate the different flavors. The script text specifically swirls slightly hinting at the idea of whisking or mixing batter, and the whisk is simplified. Housescript replaces the previous sans serif found that was found for ‘the’.

Final Color Choices
Here are the other final colors that I picked to represent the different flavors— strawberry, chocolate chip, pumpkin, and blueberry seen respectively.

A graphic standard was created to determine the constraints in which the Mix logo could be utilized. The following pages contain the specifics along with the logo, along with applications to a business system and advertisements. Early on I decided to take photographs of pancakes as I wanted to rely heavily on the interaction of photographs and graphics throughout my packaging.

Packaging
38
Initial Illustrator Design
The Mix packaging is unique against other pancake packaging with its multi use and sustainability. I determined that each disc while being compostable will also expand up into a mixing bowl. I started by creating a rough paper mock up and then created an illustrator file of all the parts (seen here). One thing that I noticed with my paper mock ups was the difficulty of a creating a cylindrical shape that would hold itself together. I improvised by looking up some packaging layouts for cylinders online, and then created tabs surrounding my base circle, and also on the bottom of the outside wall in order to create a sturdy body. In order to create a collapsible bowl, I experimented with tracks placed on the inside of the disc.
39
Prototypes
Here are the various iterations of my packaging prototypes. I stacked them (seen above far left) in order to get a feeling for how tall my final packaging would be. I created 5 prototypes, changing each one slightly according to issues occurring.
40
Prototypes
From this process I ended up with several conclusions. 1. The width of the tracks must be a sturdy and thick material in order to prevent the disc from disconnecting off the rails. 2. The width of the stop (the piece that juts out and interacts with the tracks) needs to be as thin as possible in order to not disturb the snug fit of the material. 3. Laser cutting will not work as the charred residue will dirty the paper. 4. The inside tabs of the base circle need to be smoothed or covered in some way in order to aid the collapsible disc in fluid movement. 5. Paper width and weight counts in terms of precise measurements

After experimenting I was able to move into applying my logo to the actual packaging. This was also done in Illustrator. I utilized the photography in conjunction with my stacking discs to create the image of a completed stack of pancakes (seen above left). The log was enlarged to create lids (seen right top) and on the inside of the lid flavors are identified (bottom right).
