MUSTANG SOCCER The 2020-21 Great Plains Athletic Conference postseason tournament stops at Elwood Olsen Stadium this afternoon as one of four sites for quarterfinal round action. Along with head coach Tom Maxon’s second-seeded Mustangs welcoming seventh-seeded Midland University, the tourney’s top seed and regular-season champion Briar Cliff University faces eighth-seeded Dordt University across town; the fifth-seeded University of Jamestown team travels to fourth-seeded Hastings, and third-seeded Concordia University hosts sixth-seeded Dakota Wesleyan University in the lone evening contest. The winner of today’s meeting between Mside and Midland faces either Concordia or DWU Tuesday, April 6, in semifinal round competition at the higher seed’s venue. A narrow 1-0 victory for the Warriors on the same Olsen Stadium FieldTurf this past October increased MU’s current series win streak to eight. With that in mind, Midland has a 12-7-1 all-time series advantage. You couldn’t have put the proverbial piece of paper between Morningside and Midland in the regular-season meeting. The Mustangs fired off seven shots against the Warriors’ defense during a tense regular-season clash. Freshman midfielder Sina Feeser led the attack with four total and two on frame. With overtime looming between the two sides, Midland, holding a slim 11-7 shots edge, broke the deadlock in the 84th minute. Senior goalkeeper Alexandra Homan tallied a save and running her then scoreless streak to over 350 minutes until MU got behind the home team defense for the game-winning strike. Homan’s net prowess has reached the national level. She’s 13th in goalsagainst-average with a minimal 0.45. Due to her and fellow netminder Sarah Finn’s efforts and the bedrock defensive unit in front of them during the fall and into the spring, the Maroon has been able to forge nine shutouts which rank 10th-highest. Maxon’s crew has produced a 2-1 record in three previous nonconference matches going into the league tournament. Morningside bested MidAmerica Nazarene of Kansas 2-1 and Dordt 1-0 while taking No. 18-ranked Baker University of Kansas into an extra session on the road before falling 1-0. Eight of the Mustangs’ last nine outings have been decided by one goal. A trio consisting of Alex Homan and freshmen midfielders Eva Geiben and Sina Feeser guide Morningside’s offense. They’ve each produced three goals. Feeser has also been a strong contributor with four assists.
ABOUT MIDLAND Freshman forward Dana Gomez, the hero for head coach Greg Jarosik’s team in the first edition of the 2020-21 series against the Mustangs, is the Warriors’ offensive leader. She’s tallied six goals. Junior midfielder Brittany Llanes is close behind with four goals and three assists. Senior Rachel Thigpen has been the top choice in goal. She’s produced five victories, all of which have come by shutout. Thigpen also has 48 saves to her credit.
