MUSTANG SOCCER It’s a crosstown showdown for 2020 Great Plains Athletic Conference postseason tournament supremacy this evening. Top-seeded and regular-season champion Morningside College welcomes second-seeded Briar Cliff University to Elwood Olsen Stadium. The Mustangs (15-3-1), winners of five in a row, reached the finals with a thrilling 3-2 victory over fourth-seeded Northwestern College in semifinal round action on April 13. The Chargers (12-3-2) made their way to the championship match with a 4-0 victory over seventhseeded Doane last weekend. They then received a forfeit in the semifinals due to COVID-19 issues within third-seeded Hastings College’s program.

THE MATCH-UP Head coach Tom Maxon’s program has won six of the last eight on the all-time annals versus BCU. The previous two has seen a slight shift in the trend, though, as Briar Cliff knocked the Maroon out of the GPAC tourney in 2019 with a 1-0 victory at this evening’s venue, and the two sides played to a doubleovertime tie at BCU’s field in late November. It had a little bit of everything. Indeed, the league tourney semifinal between Morningside and Northwestern gave fans in attendance a generous sampling of soccer facets Tuesday. A pair of own goals from the Red Raider defense, a fantastic penalty kick save by reigning league Defensive Player of the Year Bjarne Huth, and in the end, what has been a regularity for Maroon fans in attendance proved to be the difference. Junior forward Okan Golge worked a two-on-one chance near the visiting goal with sophomore forward Robin Thomala as the match went into its final 10 minutes. As NWC net minder Ezekiel Foltz went out to try and bat away the ball, Golge slipped it neatly into the left corner for a 3-1 home team lead that had Mustangs fans approving in unison. Maxon and his staff would have probably preferred, along with the team, that the outcome had stayed that way. However, NWC proved resilient with standout offensive presence Juan Mackrey getting a corner kick off Matt Roll’s foot that hit his head perfectly and sending it over Huth’s outstretched hands to

make the count 3-2. Mackey, accounting for both visiting team scores, kept his teammates attacking until the final seconds when Thomala collected a loose ball and fired it into the night as the clock ticked down to zeroes. Morningside out-shot their guests 12-9 over the 90 minutes. Freshman Victor Beker posted five tries, three of which were saved by Foltz. Huth finished with two saves of his own compared to the Red Raiders’ keeper’s five. Golge’s score, continuing a current span of tallying at least one goal in five straight matches in the early-week triumph, added to a splendid 2020-21 slate for the two-time reigning conference Offensive Player of the Year. He ranks among the national top two in seven statistical categories, including leading the nation in goals (1.58), points (3.63), and total shots per contest. He’s second in game-winning goals (eight), overall goals (30), points (69), and shots on goal per outing (3.050). Due to his and the rest of the offense’s sparkling play, the team is second in assists (65) and goals (68) and third in assists per match (3.42) on the national report. Tonight’s winner receives an automatic bid to the 2020 NAIA Championship Series. The tournament begins April 22-24 at select on-campus sites.

ABOUT BRIAR CLIFF Head coach Cory Christensen’s squad is 3-2-1 in its last six matches. That includes a 2-2 set in the spring with wins over DU and Waldorf University and losses to Grand View College and William Penn University. The senior tandem of forward Marcus Horwood and defender Vinicius Ribeiro guide the offense. They’ve both registered eight goals, with Horwood’s four saves sharing the squad lead with senior midfielder Rodrigo Oliveira. Senior Leandro Faria and freshman Coy Laytham have shared the Chargers’ net-minding duties. Faria has seven victories and five shutouts as part of a tiny 0.71 goals-against average. Latham has recorded two wins and one shutout.
